very strong and can not be reused until the concrete in

Prestressing sysenmA prestressing system comprises

essentially a method of stressing the steel combined
woth a method of anchoring it to condrete. Anumber of
different system ans their patents for tensioning and
anchoring the tendons exists. Some prominent and more
common systems are discussed as follow:

Pre- tensioninf Systems and Eng Anchoraged : The

simplest prestressing system consist of two bulkheads
anchored against the ends od a stressing bed. The
tensons are pulled between the two bulk heads. In some
cases, the bulk head and the ned must be strong enough
to resist the force of prestress and its eccentricity.

Post-tensioning System : some of the common system

are described below, in brief.

Gifford- Udall system : Gifford- Udall system is one of

the most widely used systems, using 7 mm wires. The
cable consists of parallel wires which are seprated by
means of circular spacers placed at one meter c/c. The
siameter of spacer places at one meter c/c. The diameter
of spacer is 39 mm for cable up to 8 wires and of 51
mm for cable up to 12 wires.

Plate Anchorage: shows the plate anchor system

originally used by Gifford udall system. It edssentially
consists of a bearing plate, a thrust ring anchor grips ans
a steel helix . The wires are stressed and anchored
individually helix . The wires are stressed ans anchored
individually by snall wedge type Udll grips seating
against a bearing plate. The thrust ring is casr into the
concrete. The bearing plate.

members,whereas,post-tensioning is used for large span
members.

Tube Anchorage: This is the most recent anchorage

system in which the wedges fit directly into the tapered
resesses in the bearing plate which is thick. Thus the
need for separate grios is elimnited. The nearing plate
includes a threaded hole for grouting purpose. This type
of anchorage is available for 8 wire and 12 wire cables.
The jack pulls one wire at a time.

post-tensioning allow the tendons to be placed with little

difficulty throught the structural element on smooth
curve of any designed profile.pre-tensionined tendons
can also be used for curved profile but required
expensive plant facilities.

Pcs Mono-wire System: In this system, wires are
tensioned individually. The system uses collect sleeves
wedging spacer in conial holes. These sleeves are of
single piece serrat3ed internally to give positive grip to
wire passing throw them.

If due to the dead load and external loads, the bending

moments at the section is M, then the extreme stresses at
the section due to bending moments alone.
Eccentric prestressing: It will be advantageous to place
the tendon t an eccentricity.

Axial Prestressing: shows a simply suppored

prestressed concrete bean of rectangular section section
prestressed by a tendon provided through its centroidal
longitudinal axis.

Shows a bean of rectangulat section prestressed by a

tendon placed longitudinally axix. Let the beam be
subjected to an external loads system. Let, p be the
prestressing force supplied by the tendon. Let due to the
dead load and external loads the blending moment at a
sectin be M.

Let the beam be subjected to an external load system.

Let P be the prestressing force suopplied by the tendon.
Due to this prestressing force, the compressive stressed
induced in concreted in given by whee id the sectional
area of the number.
