STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Hi I am being V.S.S.N.VARMA.B pursuing PhD program at IIT BOMBAY. I am applying for this PhD
recruitment process to change my TAP to TA category. Here is my brief Statement of Purpose.
Why Higher Studies?
Right from my schooling I had a fascination about the tiny things that control the heavy
objects Electronics. This interest in electronics made me to pursue my Bachelors in Electronics and
Communications Engineering in one of the reputed colleges by name CHAITANYA ENGINEERING
COLLEGE affiliated to JNTU KAKINADA from 2005 to 2009. The course work gave me a good
foundation in subjects like Digital and Analog electronics, Microprocessors, Analog and Digital
communications, VLSI, Radar Engineering, Electromagnetic wave theory and Antenna theory etc. To be
very specific, I am very much interested in Solid State Devices and Microelectronics. This interest made
me to attend and organize many embedded and robotics workshops in and outside of my college. The
workshops that I attended were
1) iTRIx Robotics workshop conducted by IIT BOMBAY alumni in our college.
2) TECHFEST competition at IIT KANPUR in the year 2008.
3) ISOI National Workshop on Micro and Nano Systems/ Embedded Systems Design using
Microcontrollers at ANDHRA UNIVERSITY , VISAKHAPATNAM .
Even though Robotics is an entirely different branch of study, it made me to learn how effectively the
electronics can be used to control every part of a ROBOT. In-fact, the electronics is the heart of any
component that we see today. I learned programming of a PIC Microcontroller using C language,
hardware and software interface, motor control, serial and parallel communication that happens between a
microcontroller and computer.
Academic Background :
The title of my Bachelor thesis is Face Recognition using Matlab. I lead a group of 4
students during this thesis and implemented the face recognition algorithm that is used to scan faces of
different people. I learned the applications of Matlab software for solving real world problems. The same

system maintains the database of the faces the faces that will be used for reference. The input to the same
will be through software or camera.
My Job Experience:
After completion of my Bachelors, I joined as an Assistant Instrumentation
Maintenance Engineer at BEEKAY ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Vizag Steel Plant from 10 th June
2009 to 5th April 2011.
But as my love towards research was still present I appeared for Masters qualifying
entrance exam GATE in 2011. I got a good score and got selected for Nuclear Engineering Technology
Program in IIT KANPUR.
My Masters:
I completed my Masters in Nuclear Engineering and Technology in May 2013. It is an
interdisciplinary branch which mainly focuses on safe extraction, production and usage of Nuclear energy.
Even though it is an interdisciplinary branch, we had thorough course work which emphasized on control
systems, involvement of wireless communication devices, sensors and electronics instruments used for
radiation detection. We also had a laboratory on Nuclear Radiation Detectors and Measurement theory. I
worked on many problems for the control of Boiling water reactor using Thermal Hydraulics, Wireless
communication devices. My masters thesis title was Single Fuel Pin Power and Temperature
distributions using Numerical Methods. The theoretical computations are done using MATLAB
software.
Logical thinking is the crucial thing required for research and I learned the way how to apply the same
with the help of my professors during my Masters and Bachelors.
My department NET at IIT KANPUR is a galaxy of good knowledge and motivating
faculty like Prof M.S.KALRA(PhD MIT), Prof Prabhat Munshi, Prof S.K.Gupta, Prof O.P.Singh. They
motivated me about simplifying any complex problem of research into simple problem with their
experience. This reminds me of a famous Einstein quote Any intelligent fool can make things bigger,
more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the
opposite direction.

Why IIT BOMBAY?

For successful completion of any research work requires application, funding, facilities and
resourceful faculty. I studied the profiles of various professors in Electrical Engineering department,
Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science Department and Centre for Research in Nano Technology
and Sciences and felt that their working areas match my interests.
I feel that IIT BOMBAY is most felicitous place for me because it gives me plenty of
educational advantages. The program curriculum offers both the research and theoretical knowledge to its
student. The research faculties are very renowned and constantly guide their students. I have this
impression from the way they replied to my mails.
My goals:
I am very much interested to work in Microelectronics, Solid State Devices and Solar
Cells/Photovoltaics. I am already pursuing my PhD in Electrical Engineering at IIT BOMBAY and I
would like to change my category from TAP to TA. I feel confident that I can meet the standards and
expectation levels of the University.
Conclusion:
I would like to conclude that I have the strong determination, perseverance and ability for a
graduate program. I am looking for an opportunity to research and excel at IIT BOMBAY.
