Tynemouth Streets Behind

Tynemouth’s First XI hosted Chester-le-Street and fielded a trio of debutants, viz: their
recently arrived overseas player Shahid Nazad and Durham University students Dan Newton
and James Corbett. Unfortunately, Scott Borthwick was not available so there was a further late
shuffle to the side. Chester batted first and Nazir was quick off the mark, dismissing
Birtwhistle, caught at the wicket by Greg Hollins for 3. However, Alan Mustard and their
Andrew Smith then embarked on a long stand. Both were dismissed by Phil Morse, Mustard
stumped for 63 and Smith lbw for 78. The only other Tynemouth success was Waite bowled by
Jamie Coates for 54 as Chester posted a useful 268-4.
The Tynemouth reply was off to a poor start with wickets tumbling. Openers Dan Young and
Iain Purdy only scored one single each, Newton was lbw without scoring and recent hero with
the bat, Ben Debnam was ducked. Skipper Andrew Smith and Hollins built some resistance but
went for 19 and 17 respectively. The next two men also got into double figures: Tony Turner
15 and Nazir run out for 18. James Corbett then did a splendid rearguard action with a
promising 87 before being the 7th lbw victim of the innings, supported by 4 from Morse and 14
not out from Coates. Richard Waite claimed 4-51. Tynemouth were all out for 190 and are now
in trouble at the foot of the table without a league win so far this season and only South
Shields have fewer points.
On Sunday the First Team made a total of only 86 in the first round of the Banks Salver. Their
opponents Durham Academy, visitors to Preston Avenue this Saturday, won comfortably by
nine wickets.
In the reverse fixture Tynemouth Seconds also batted second and lost to Chester. Birbeck and
G Harrison were difficult to separate with David Hymers and Josh Koen opening the
Tynemouth attack. Chris Beever broke the deadlock when Ian Stewart performed a swift
stumping to dismiss Birbeck for 37. Beever bowled in spells to record 3-48. Hymers (1-32)
caught and bowled Harrison for 43 but further Chester men made contributions to a useful
score of 208-6. Koen claimed the important wicket of Adam Nairn bowled for 45 and Stewart
took a catch to give Koen 2-40. Berryman was not out 32 with Russell Perry and Connor
Lonnberg both wicketless for 39 runs conceded.
Tynemouth’s reply was a capitulation; all out for 98. Andrew Lineham scored 24 of these
precious runs but otherwise only opener Tony Lion and Beever made double figures as the
Street shared the wickets round gleefully, especially J Harrison 4-12 mopping up the tail. The
Seconds will have to move up through the gears for the next match which is a real
challenge, away on 22nd May to South Northumberland.

TUCK SHOP NEWS

Thanks to the generous donation from Ian
Beever, a new tuck shop is to be located next to
the pavilion. Tuck shops are already in place at
other cricket clubs and, as well as providing a
welcome facility for junior players & parents,
they are believed to generate a significant
contribution to club funds.
The stocking of the shop (sweets, crisps, soft
drinks, etc.) is expected to be handled by the bar
committee, but volunteers are required to staff
the shop during junior practice sessions and
matches.
If you could possibly offer some of your time to serve in the shop - either regularly or
occasionally - or perhaps to coordinate the staffing, Russell Perry would be delighted to hear
from you on 07947 524204 or via russell.perry@csgclaims.com .

In the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League, Tynemouth Thirds hosted the Old
Record Players at Backworth. As usual, skipper Paul Coates lost the toss and ORP took first
advantage of the superb batting track. They wasted no timer in posting 52 off the first 10 overs
with Scott Graham and Jack Beaumont needing to keep the ball well up to Jason Tenniswood
and Matt Planchant. Don Catley was brought on and soon had Tenniswood caught behind with
a superb reaction catch by Steve McLeod. Players pushed on and Digvijay also hit some
boundaries. The score mounted steadily and reached 98 off 20 overs when Catley trapped
Digvijay for 29, followed by Arun lbw for 4 to give Catley 13-3-50-3. Adam Holroyd and
Planchant put on an impressive and impervious 148 for the fourth wicket with the experienced
Graeme Hallam and Tony Lion coming into the bowling attack and the score reaching 200 at
the 40 overs mark. Eventually Lion had Planchant stumped by McLeod for 74. The final ball of
the innings brought a wicket for Hallam with Holroyd bowled for 105. Coates had moved the
bowling around but ORP were well up to the task and recorded 278 off their 50 overs. Bowling
was: Beaumont 7-0-56-0, Graham 8-2-28-0, Hallam 13-0-72-1, Chris Beever 4-0-21-0 and
Lion 5-0-33-1.
Tynemouth were still quietly confident with their decent batting line up. Tim Whiting and
Chris Beever put on 27 for the first wicket when Digvijay struck. Just when the acceleration
was beginning, he took out Beever for 17, then Stephen Davison and Steve Dunlop in the same
over to send Tynemouth reeling. Lion came in to steady the ship but then Whiting played on to
Digvijay for 15 hard earned runs and Coates fell for only 2 to see Hallam at the crease. He and
Lion started to play their experienced shots and moved the score steadily on to 66 off the first
20 overs, still well behind the clock but improving. Unfortunately Hallam gave a simple catch
to mid off when on 23 and the writing was being chalked on the wall. Beaumont a duck,
McLeod run out again for 2 and Catley bowled for 3 meant the last pair were already at the
crease. Graham improvised to reach 15 before being bamboozled by the spin of Tony Glover
and Lion was stranded on 67 not out. Digvijay claimed 13-4-33-6 to see the Players home by
115 runs. Tynemouth will now have to regroup for a repeat visit to GEM at Wardley next
Saturday.

Wear your Tynemouth Colours

Team kit for the First X1 and Second X1 is now being made available. Both of these teams are
required to have Colour clothing for the 20/20 competitions so, as a club, we ordered sufficient
sets of kit for both teams. The pack contains one 20/20 top, one white playing shirt, one white
SS Jumper, and one cap. The cost of these is £50 per pack and we would be grateful if all First
and Second X1 players were to buy these from the club. Payment details will be made available
when the kit arrives. A "splash top" will also be made available at a later date.
For all other players who would like to order Tynemouth CC kit you can go online at CF
Sports and if you enter "Tynemouth" in the relevant search box you will be directed to their
page for our specific kit.
