THE TEST OF ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS FROM EXTRACTS OF MANGOSTEEN


PEEL (Garcinia mangostana L) IN CAPSULES WHICH ARE SOLD FREELY IN
PADANG CITY AGAINTS BACTERIA OF Staphylococcus aureus
AND Escherichia coli FOR IN VITRO

Extracts of mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L) contains many chemical compounds,


especially xanthone which has antibacterial activity. The aim of this study was to examine the
antibacterial effect of mangosteen peel extract on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and
Escherichia coli. Both of these bacteria have a different nature, but equally capable of causing
infections in humans. Mangosteen peel extract tested in this study were taken from the five
products with different brands in capsules that are sold freely in Padang city.
The study was conducted in the laboratory of Microbiology Faculty of Medicine University
of Andalas Padang in August-September 2015. This is an experimental research of using the
diffusion method and analysis by connecting a difference which is owned by five samples that
are sold freely as an antibacterial effect, and cefoperazon as a positive control,
The results showed that all the samples used mangosteen peel extract did not have
antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and four of five samples have antibacterial effect
on Staphylococcus aureus. ANOVA analysis shows that each of Garcinia mangostana L extracts
gives differ effect significantly on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The conclusion of this
study is the four of five samples of mangosteen peel extract in capsule that are sold freely had the
ability antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and did not have antibacterial effect
against Escherichia coli.

Mangosteen peel extract or Garcinia mangostana L contains many chemical compounds,


especially xanthones which have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to test the
antibacterial effect of mangosteen peel extract on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and
Escherichia coli. Both of these bacteria have a different nature, but equally capable of causing
infections in humans. Mangosteen peel extract tested in this study were taken from the five
products with different brand in the form of capsules that are sold freely in the city of Padang.
This type of research is experimental methods and analytical diffuse disc by connecting a
difference which is owned by five samples-the-counter as an antibacterial effect, and
cefoperazon as a positive control.
The results showed that all samples used mangosteen peel extract has no antibacterial effect
against Escherichia coli and four of five samples has an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus
aureus .. Test ANOVA analysis shows that each of the extract of Garcinia mangostana L
significantly different effects on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion The results of
this study are four of five samples of mangosteen peel extract in capsule counter has the ability
antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and has no antibacterial effect against
Escherichia coli.
