letterS to the editor

Lack of transparency
over water concerning

transparency, especially when it

comes to our drinking water.
Kati Angelini

As a candidate for Moorestown

Town Council, I am disheartened
at how the Moorestown water department has been managed by
the current township administration. The lack of transparency is
truly concerning. For years, this
administration denied that there
was a problem with our water. It
wasnt until they were backed
into a corner by the NJDEP and
concerned residents that they
began to act. The overall mismanagement is going to cost the
ratepayers millions.
At last months council meeting, the township manager, Scott
Carew, was not himself aware if
the Kings Highway Water Plant
was once again pumping water to
the residents of Moorestown or
not. What does this say about the
overall capabilities of this administration?
It is now my understanding
that the manager of the water department/acting director of public works submitted his resignation last week. For some reason,
the township manager and the
mayor have decided not to inform
the residents of this resignation.
The residents of Moorestown
deserve nothing less than full

How is school tax

increase justified?
When is enough, enough?
Your article BOE approves
school budget with tax increase
in the May 11-17 edition of the
paper
indicates
the
new
Moorestown school budget will be
increased by 3.96 percent. How is
that increase justified?
There is no inflation in the United States, just ask any Social Security recipient. Their cost of living
increase in Social Security benefits was zero. Our county is experiencing the lowest interest rates in
decades some countries, notably
Japan and some European countries, have reached negative interest rates. The banks actually
charge their depositors interest to
keep the money on deposit.
When will the school district
realize these incremental rate increases far exceeding inflation
will ultimately drive residents
from our town?
In The Sun article, it stated
That enrollment has gone
down. Then why the rate increase considering the above
points?

underway
Moorestown is imposing its annual mandatory water restriction.
According to a release on Monday, May 16, the restriction will
encourage conservation and reduce peak water demand.
Restrictions include a ban on
the use of automatic sprinklers
and sprinkler systems between 9
a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Hand held
hoses are still permitted.
Homeowners and business people whose addresses end in an

Memorial Day

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Three-day weekend or a return to a traditional day of remembrance?

e re all familiar with Memorial Day. We know that it
is a day set aside to honor
the brave men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice to protect our
country and the freedom we have.
And we know that it is celebrated on
the last Monday in May, thereby creating a three-day weekend for most.
Maybe it shouldnt be that way.
Back when Memorial Day was first
established during the Civil War era, it
was observed on May 30. It had its own
special day, which, many will argue,
kept the focus on the meaning of the
day.
They have a point.
When one thinks of Memorial Day
these days, its easy to lose focus.
There are Memorial Day sales at

Holiday weekend distractions

Memorial Day shouldnt be about sales
or heading to the beach. It should be
about honoring those who died serving
this country. How do you reflect on
Memorial Day?

stores and the kick-off to summer

sentiment. That people have three
days off often overshadows what the
spirit of Memorial Day is all about.
We dont want to sound completely
negative. Many communities still take
pride in holding a thoughtful, meaningful Memorial Day ceremony
and/or parade. We still see flags displayed. We still see a lot of people take
time to honor those who died serving
our country.
But we also cant help but think that

lumping Memorial Day into a threeday weekend has diminished the

meaning of the day at least somewhat. There are too many distractions.
How many of us have made Memorial
Day weekend plans that have absolutely nothing to do with honoring the
meaning of the day?
Memorial Day should be special. It
should be a time when every American reflects on the sacrifices made on
his or her behalf and takes the time to
pay proper respect. Nothing should
distract from those sentiments.
Will the three-day weekend be replaced with a move back to May 30?
Doubtful. Its going to be up to each individual to cut through the clutter and
honor those who made the ultimate
sacrifice.

The Sun is proud to announce SPJ award winners

By TIM RONALDSON
Executive Editor
In my 11 years with Elauwit Media,
never have I been prouder of the work
weve done than last week, when we received word that we had won six awards in
the New Jersey chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists annual awards.
The tireless work we put in to bettering
ourselves as professionals and providing
you with the most local news you can find
at the highest quality is all worth it when
we receive praise like we did last week.
Our team consisting of Kristen Dowd,
our managing editor, along with our associate editors Erica Chayes Wida, Brigit
Bauma, Zane Clark and Mike Monostra are
all to be commended whether they were
named as award winners or not for it is
the teamwork they display that allows us to
cover your town as we do.

Erica won first place in the SPJs Wilson Barto Rookie of the Year category.
This marks the second year in a row that
one of our employees has received this
honor, after Zane won the title last year.
Sean Lajoie, who has moved on to a new position with a different company, won second place behind Erica for Rookie of the
Year.
Mike captured our other first-place title,
in the Sports Reporting category for a
story on the Moorestown High School girls
lacrosse team.
Mike also took home a second-place finish in the Photojournalism Sports category for a set of photos he took of the
Shawnee High School girls soccer team
winning South Jersey Group IV, and a
third-place finish in the Feature Reporting
category for a story on Mt. Laurels Eric
Ebo Eberling, who passed away in 2013
at the age of 17 from cancer.

Our final award this year went to Erica

again. She won second place in the Photojournalism Feature category for shots she
took at the Princeton Rec Departments annual Cardboard Canoe Race.
To view the full stories and photos that
won the awards, please visit our website,
www.elauwitmedia.com/news.
Every day, I am proud of the work our
employees do to help further our mission
of providing the best local news to the residents of every town we cover.
But I would be remiss if I didnt give a
heartfelt thank you to everyone in the
community who helps us reach that goal
by being our partners by answering the
phone when we have questions, by reaching out to us when you have a news tip.
Without that cooperation and interest in
your town newspaper, The Sun wouldnt
be what it is today! Congratulations again
to all our award winners!

Dept. of Parks & Recreation
This spring, the Department of
Parks & Recreation, with the
Moorestown community, will par-

in
the
Annual
ticipate
Moorestown Day June 4. This
town-wide celebration has something for everyone, starting with
the Annual Scott Coffee Memorial Rotary 8K Run, followed by a
day-long street fair and the Annual District Art Show, which showcases artwork and performances
from the many, phenomenally talented students in the Moorestown
school district.
The department will take its
place in front of Starbucks on
Main Street, bright and early on
Saturday morning. Recreation
staff will be on hand to answer
questions, help residents register
for programs and showcase the
variety of programs available to
all of our residents. From summer camps and clinics to fall programs, the recreation department
has something for everyone.
Also on Saturday, the Third
Floor of the Church Street Recreation Center, located in the municipal complex between Second
and Third streets, will again open
its doors to host the Annual District Art Show, sponsored by
MoorArts. This annual showcase
features the amazing talents of K-

12 students in Moorestown Township Public Schools. Admission to

the show is free and light refreshments are available to all who attend. There also will be free childrens face painting and free
crafts. The District Art Show is
another perfect example of the
Department of Parks & Recreation partnerships that exist
within Moorestown. Additionally,
this year, the District Art Show
will feature the 2016 Upcycling
Art Challenge, sponsored by the
Sustainable Moorestown Creative
Arts Committee. This challenge
presented to Moorestown High
School students will feature upcycling of materials to create
unique and interesting projects.
The District Art Show will be
open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Building upon recreation philosophy, the District Art Show
highlights the importance of
recreation in our community.
This annual showcase of student

Paul T. Andrews
April 29, 2016
Paul T. Andrews, 67, of
Jamestown, R.I., and formerly of
Moorestown, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29 at his
home surrounded by his loving
family after, in his typical style,
successfully proving the medical
field wrong about just how long
he would be able to battle cancer.
He was the beloved husband of
Suzann Suzi (Fink) Andrews
and father to Nikki Andrews
Gladding. Born in East Orange,
he was a son of the late Elias and

Ann (Nickalopolus) Andrews.

In his childhood, he was active
in the Boy Scouts and Eagle
Scouts. He was the first Greek
Boy Scout to earn the Alpha
Omega Award. He went on to
earn the Order of the Arrow,
Nathan Hale Award and two
Palms.
Paul received a bachelor's degree in business and political science from Millikin University in
1972. He was an accomplished entrepreneur in many fields. He
grew a single office real estate
and insurance company to a five
office, multi-county company and
expanded it to include property
management, a leasing division
and land development. He was a
passionate collector of classic
cars, and turned that, of course,
into a successful business endeavor. He was president of the
Burlington County Board of Realtors, a founding member of five
county MLS system in South Jersey, active in Rotary, Moorestown
Historical Society, and a member
of the NADA. He gave us more to
list, but we think you get the
point.
Besides his wife and daughter,
he also leaves Nikki's husband
Ken, of Jamestown, who he regarded as his son, his rescue pit
bull and guardian angel Olive,
and three granddogs, Tuukka,
Charlie and Tommy.
A celebration of Paul's life will
be held this summer. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that
donations be made to the South
Kingstown Animal Shelter, which
saved Olive; the North Kingstown
Animal Shelter, which saved
Tommy; or the Potter League,
where Paul would often go and
then beg Suzi to let him bring
more dogs home.

novative Conceptual Engineering
Design. ICED was started in conjunction with Charles Camarda of
NASAs program called Epic
Challenge, where students are encouraged to develop their scientific understanding and skills by
coming up with creative solutions
to real-world problems.
I thought we could bring this
program (originally for college
students) to young students of all
ages and engage them and motivate them on how to use creativity and critical thinking to come
up with innovative ideas to
solve, Camarda said.
When you put different people
on a problem, you can come up
with some very innovative solutions, Wilczewski said.
This years challenge was
about how they would colonize
Mars.
What makes Wilczewskis
course unique is he allows the
students to decide what they
would like to do their project on.
Students projects ranged from
travel with antimatter, to bringing livestock to Mars, to architecture and insulation needs.
For their hard work, MHS was
one of a few high schools invited
by Camarda to NASAs Langley
Research Center in Hampton, Va.,
where students presented the

findings of their research.

Through Moorestown Educational Foundation donating $4,000 for
the trip and fundraising, students
Mary Cervantes, Melvin Sheppard, Hunter Smith, Magan
Steinagle, Ryan Wenzler, Alexis E
Angelini, Reeves Balderson, Alex
Bewley, Alexandria AlbericBrown, James Adams, Olivia Alvarez, Lawson Hayes, Muhammad Khalid, Karla Peterson and
Nicholas Venti presented their
findings live to a board of engineers, Ph.D.s and an astronaut.
Additional students shared with
NASA via YouTube. Their presentation was streamed live
around the world and was viewed
by people in the United States and
Finland.
I felt very privileged because I
know a lot of students dont get
the chance to do this type of program and have these types of experiences, Smith said.
All students greatly appreciated and benefitted from the visit,
saying they never thought they
would get the opportunity, and
the class really bonded over the
experience.
We all benefitted from that in
indescribable ways. How many
people can say in their high
school career they got to talk to
head engineers of NASA and had
them listen to their ideas and take
their ideas on board? It made you
feel like you had power to change

Pugh hopes to continue

education as board member
PUGH
Continued from page 6

president of the board at the beginning of this year.

I thought, being younger, I had
a unique perspective and saw
what was working in the schools
firsthand. We had good boards,
but there were some votes I didnt
agree with so I ran for the board,
Pugh said.
Pugh wanted to be as knowledgeable of an asset to the board
as he could and worked to learn
more about what went into running a school district. He has
taken part in the county board as
well as the New Jersey School
Boards Association, particularly
with that in getting certifications
in the NJSBAs Board Member
Academy certification program.
I think it is really important
for any board member to be well
versed in every area you can so
you can do more of a service to
your local board It makes for a
better functioning board, and I
feel more comfortable making the
decisions, Pugh said.
The New Jersey School Board
Academy is designed to give
board members training and information on a variety of subjects
related to their board duties.
Those areas include, but are not
limited to, labor relations, leadership, school finance, advocacy,
governance, school law, negotiations and student achievement.
A certified board member is
the second tier of the NJSBAs
Board Member Academy certification program. To become a
CBM, a board member must have
earned at least 20 credit hours of
training in at least four subject
areas and attended prescribed
county/state meetings.
The master board member
builds on the CBM. Programs are
designed to enhance interpersonal and leadership skills, enabling
members to better govern their
schools. To receive the MBM,
members must have earned a
CBM, 20 additional credits, pass a
comprehensive exam and additional county/state requirements.

The highest level of individual

certification in the Board Member Academy is certified board
leader. To be awarded the CBL,
members must be a MBM and
earn an additional 20 credits for a
total of 60 credits from all of the
core areas, pass a comprehensive
exam and have service in a leadership role at the local, county
and/or state level.
For all of the certifications, the
board member must have served
at least one term or more than
three years on their local board.
Pugh was able to achieve all of
the requirements for all levels
during his first term; he just had
to wait for his three years to be finalized.
Very few board members in
New Jersey have earned all three
designations, especially at the
same time and within a first
term. Pugh said he has only
known one other person in the
state to achieve that this year.
Pugh felt he has learned so
much and had so many experiences, from visiting the Goddard
Space Flight Center in Maryland
to experiencing boot camp while
trying to obtain his certifications.
He feels more rounded in various
subject matters the board faces
and more comfortable making decisions because of it.
In addition to the NJSBA presenting awards, state Sen. Dawn
Addiego attended the meeting to
present joint Senate and Assembly citations from New Jersey's
Eighth Legislative District. Rep.
Tom MacArthur also prepared
certificates of special congressional recognition.
It was nice of them to do,
showing board members that
their time is valued, Pugh said.
Elections were also held for the
BCSBA for the 2016-2018 officers.
All three officers will be continuing for a second term, which includes Pugh as president, Margaret "Peggi" Haynes of Mt. Laurel as vice president and Harry
Litwack of Delanco as vice president of legislation.
Pugh hopes to continue his education as a board member and
hopes all board members, no matter the district, will want to do the
same.

In other news:
The MHS Student Council
held a talent show and from the
proceeds each class received a
portion of the funds. The senior
class also chose a charity to donate to, which was Pennies From
Melvin. All money raised by the
charity benefits Cooper University Hospital. Doctors from Cooper
Hospital were on hand to receive
the $500 donation at the meeting.
Scott McCartney, the superintendent who will begin on July 1,
attended the meeting. After an
introduction at the beginning of
the meeting, he formally thanked
the BOE and the Moorestown
community for his upcoming appointment.
The BOE is looking over the
resumes it received from community members interested in serving on the BOE. The BOE members will interview potential candidates and choose two people to
fill empty seats.
The board hopes to have that
accomplished by the June BOE
meeting, which will be held on
Tuesday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the
WMAS Media Center.
