minerals.TheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)establishesTolerableUpperLevelsofIntakeformost
oftheessentialvitaminsandminerals.
However,productsmarkedasdietarysupplementsarenotheldtothesamestandardsasprescription
medicationsandmaycontainmorethanthoselevels.

ChooseYourDietarySupplementsWisely
TheNIHhasnotedthatsomemultivitaminscontainlevelsofvitaminsandmineralsthataresubstantially
higherthantheestablishedtolerableupperlevelsofintake.
Thisisespeciallyworrisomebecauseofaddedintakefromfortifiedfoodssuchasbreakfastcereals,and
fortifiedbeveragessuchasvitaminwaterandenergydrinks.
Onestudyofchildrenshowedthatchildrenwhotakeageneralmultivitaminareoftenabovetheupper
tolerableintakelevelforiron,zinc,copper,selenium,folicacidandvitaminAwhilestillhavinginsufficient
levelsofvitaminDandcalcium.1

providedinexcesswhilethemoreexpensiveonesarenotincludedinthemultivitamintabletsor

effectswhentakenonalongtermbasisfromthecombinationoffoods,fortifiedfoods,beverages,and
supplements.
