PART A

1. [5 points] 2 balls are chosen randomly from an urn containing 2 white, 1 black, and 2
orange balls. Suppose that we win Rs. 10 for each orange ball selected, Re. 2 for each
white ball elected and lose Re. 1 for each black ball selected and let X denote our
winnings. What are the minimum and maximum values for X and the probabilities
associated with these two values?
2. [5 points] A set of 100 cards with distinct numbers from 1 to 100 is randomly divided
into 5 piles of 20 cards each. Compute the probability that each of the 5 piles have
exactly one number that is a multiple of 20?
3. [5 points] Urn A has 3 white and 6 black balls. Urn B has 6 white and 9 black balls. We
flip a biased coin that has a probability of 2/3 for obtaining a head. If the outcome is
heads, then a ball from Urn A is selected, whereas if the outcome is tails, then a ball from
Urn B is selected. Suppose that a white ball is selected. What is the probability that the
coin landed tails?
4. [10 points] Suppose that you continually collect coupons and that there are m different
types and each coupon type is equally likely to be chosen. Suppose that you have just
collected your nth coupon. What is the probability that
i.
[6 points] it is the first time you have picked two consecutive coupons of type i?
ii.
[4 points] it is the first time you have picked two consecutive coupons of a new
type?

PART B
1. [7 points] 3 players A, B and C each roll a pair of dice. A wins if he/she obtains a sum
that is a multiple of 2, B wins if he/she obtains a sum of 3 or 9 and C wins otherwise (i.e.
he/she obtains a sum of 5, 7 or 11). Assuming that A rolls first, B rolls second and C rolls
third, what is the probability that A wins the game?
2. [7 points] 24 people attend a 2 day workshop. The workshop has 4 different circular
tables labeled C1, C2, C3 and C4. C1 can seat only 3 persons, C 2 can seat 5 persons, C3 can
seat 7 persons and C4 can seat 9 persons. On the 1st day of the workshop, the 24 people
were seated among the 4 tables in some arbitrary manner. On the 2 nd day, we want to

ensure that the same group of people are not seated in the same table (i.e. in each table C i,
i =1, 2, 3, 4, at least one new person should be seated). In how many ways this can be
done?
3. [6 points] A 100 people are waiting in line to board a plane. Among these 100 persons
there are 5 dignitaries (Rattle class) who are assigned seat numbers 96, 97, 98, 99 and
100. The remaining 95 people (Cattle class) are assigned seat numbers from 1 to 95. The
person with the seat number 1 ignores the seat number on the ticket and occupies a
random seat. All of the other passengers go to their proper seats unless it has been already
occupied, in which case, they find free seat to sit in, at random. What is the probability
that all the 5 dignitaries will sit on his/her proper seat?
