No matter who you are or where you are
on life's journey, you are welcome
here. We believe in extravagant welcome. This is why we insist that God's communion table is open, not closed, and
God's gift and claim in baptism are irrevocable. We advocate justice for
all. Our congregations extend hospitality
as a sign of God's inclusive love. We
teach that evangelism - offering bread to those
in search of it - is God's mission. Our perspective is global, not provincial. We work with - not
against - people of other faiths. Why?
Because God is still speaking!

"Abraham and Three Prominent Josephs:

A Tribute to Father Figures"
The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "I am God
Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. I will confirm
my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase
your numbers." Genesis 17:1b-2.
In Genesis God turned elderly Abram's world upsidedown, changed his name, and told him he would be the father of many nations. No pressure there. Abraham took on
this responsibility with his wife who was also renamed
Sarah. They put one foot in front of the other, tried to figure
out what God was really saying when nothing continued to
happen, and moved things along themselves with Hagar and
Ishmael, before allowing God to move in God's timing with
Isaac. God met Abraham in the twists and turns of his desire to be God's servant, and to help God along in that endeavor.
God's Spirit nudges and moves,
scatters and gathers dads of all sorts, in
all sorts of circumstances, influencing in
all sorts of imaginative and important
ways as fathers, sons, brothers, grandpas, mentors and friends.
Three prominent Josephs in the Bible stand out as
pretty extraordinary gentlemen themselves. They are all fathers in a way, especially Joseph who raised Jesus as his
own, yet each has a story of his own to tell, in his own sort of
way.
Joseph, son of Jacob and favored wife Rachel, had
four maternal influences as well as being the "favorite" son
of the twelve. When reading the Genesis stories about Joseph and his brothers, his dreams and his adventures, it is
amazing to imagine how everything turned out. Some pretty
rotten things happened to Joseph, though his personality
certainly contributed both to the consequences he suffered
as well as the successes. Again, there were twists and turns
to his story, and an unfailing faith in and connection with
Creator God, his ultimate Father figure in heaven. Joseph
seemed to be almost in a different world, or truly in the world
but not of it, as he acted as scoundrel, counselor, leader,
and big brother--beloved son in the exciting story of God's

Story Of Gods Gathering

people the Hebrews in the later Genesis chapters.
There is less movement and detail in the
story of Joseph, Jesus' earthly father, yet the gentle
strength and openness to God's will and way were
very evident. His story begins with a very important
identity--"...Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband
of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called
Christ." Matthew 1:16. Again, no pressure... "Thus
there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham
to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon,
and fourteen from the exile to the Christ." Matthew
1:17.
Joseph had a horrendous choice to make.
His betrothed had obviously been with another man
and become pregnant, but his faith and compassion
forbid his heart from condemning her to death.
Joseph, man of faith and strong heart grieved I'm
sure, yet open to Spirit he received a dream that
convinced him to break the strong bonds of culture,
take Mary as his wife and raise this child, Jesus, as
his own.
This behavior was unprecedented.
He was Jesus' guardian and teacher,
listening to the guidance of Spirit, caring for and
protecting his family on this transformative journey.
We do not know when Joseph died, but we see in
Luke how Joseph continued to surround Jesus even
when Jesus' words at the temple may have stung
just a bit.
"Everyone who heard him was amazed at his
understanding and his answers. When his parents
saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to
him, 'Son, why have you treated us like this? Your
father and I have been anxiously searching for you.'
'Why were you searching for me?' he asked. 'Didn't
you know I had to be in my Father's house?' But
they did not understand what he was saying to
them."
The responsibility, unimagined when young,
Joseph embraced through faith.
Mark 15:43-47 speaks of Joseph of
Arimathea, who was a prominent member of the
Council and had also become a disciple of Jesus.
He was awaiting the kingdom of God. Luke tells us
Joseph had not consented to the Council's decision
to crucify Jesus. He was a wealthy man and already
had his own tomb picked out and purchased, and I'm
sure he never imagined that it would hold, even so
briefly, the son of God. But Spirit moved him to go to
Pilate and ask for Jesus' body, which he wrapped in
linen and laid in his own tomb, with the care of a
grieving father. Isaiah 53:9 says, "He was assigned
a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his
death, though he had done no violence, nor was any
deceit in his mouth.

The Lamplighter
"We don't hear about Joseph of
Arimathea again, but his role played out, like our
other Josephs, according to his faith, and to the
gentle strength of Spirit's guidance working
through him.
What of your father or a father-figure in
your life? Along with the stories of our faith
foundation, let us remember those special men
among us this Father's Day perhaps in a new
way, perhaps asking God our Parent for that
extra strength when God turns our lives upsidedown.
In Christ's Love,
Pastor Kristin

CONFERENCE CLAMOR
Rev. Dale Parson on Sabbatical
As many of you know, our Associate Conference
Minister, the Rev. Dale Parson, will be celebrating
his 20th anniversary of ministry with us this year!
Woohoo!
Dale will be going on his 4-month sabbatical beginning July 1 through October 31. During Dale's
sabbatical, the conference will have a Sabbatical
Associate Conference Minister, who will minister
with us. At their meeting last week, the MMS Conference Council approved Ginny's recommendation to hire the Rev. Tyler Connoley
as the Sabbatical Associate Conference Minister.
Tyler will live in the Western Association 4 days out of the week in order to minister with the Western Association. As Dale has been actively
involved in the Church Vitality Covenanted Ministry Team, Tyler will also
assume those responsibilities, where he brings
conference knowledge and personal experience
to the areas of churches in transition and decline
as well as church starts.
Dale will train Tyler beginning Monday, June 13.

MMSUCC Conf Annual Gathering (CAG)

Mark your calendars for this year's Conference
Annual Gathering to be held at the Holiday Inn
Executive Center in Columbia, MO, June 9-11.

Lafayette Area Womens Fellowship

The Spring meeting of the LAWF was held on
April 28th at Salem UCC, in Higginsville. After
registration and morning snacks, the meeting
was opened by Martha Hawthorne, secretary of
the LAWF. Pastor Andy Mockridge of St. Luke
UCC in Grand Pass had the devotion. Martha
introduced guest speaker Christal Milligan, Volunteer Coordinator/Advocate of "House of
Hope, Inc." based in Lexington, MO. Christal
shared her own story of domestic violence and
why she is so passionate about the children
who may live in the home but are being abused
or neglected. House of Hope currently covers a
three-county area, working to break the cycle of
violence by increasing public awareness, providing shelter, services and support to victims,
and cooperating with other groups to create a
safe environment for all. The offering from this
meeting was donated to the House of Hope.
Rev. Dale Parsons, Assoc. Conference Minister, brought greetings from the conference and
introduced our soon-to-be sabbatical Assoc.
Conference Minister, Rev. Tyler Connoley. He
will be coming on board July 1 as Dale will be
on sabbatical for four months. Rev. Tommy Faris of Salem UCC offered the Benediction and
blessed the food. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious carry-in salad luncheon. Thank you to
Salem UCC for hosting this spring meeting.

Mayview Sesquicentennial
The 120th Mayview
Picnic will be July
8th, 9th and
10th. This will be a
very special event as
the community will celebrate its founding 150
years ago. For more information on the schedule, parade entry form and special events
planned, check out Mayviewpicnic.com.

UCC Lafayette Cluster

The UCC Lafayette Cluster of churches met on
April 25th in Blackburn. Rev Bob Atkinson reported that he was pleased with the participation for his class this winter on The New Testament. He is considering teaching another class
next winter with other clergy, possibly on World
Religions. As before, there would be three
classes, held on one Saturday of Feb., March
and April.
Every year for the past 50 years or so, Ebenezer UCC goes on a float trip at Shannondale.
They are inviting anyone from the Lafayette
Cluster to go along on this years trip, July 15
17th.

The cost will be about $20.00. For more information, contact the Levasy church.
The UCC church in Grand Pass will host
their annual Picnic on July 20th. As usual, the
Marshall Band will perform beginning at 7:00
pm. Food will be available beginning at 6:00
pm. A beautiful, hand-made quilt will be raffled.

WESTERN ASSN SPRING MEETING

The Association of the MO Mid-South UCC
Conference met on April 23, 2016 in New
Franklin. The host churchs pastor, Tim Fairley,
set the tone for the meeting by sharing his story
of encountering a homeless man. By listening
to Gods voice instead of the voices in the community coffee shop, he and the homeless man
were both blessed. Theres no knowing how
many others may have been touched as well.
The Rev. Dr. Ginny Brown Daniel gave the keynote address with the
theme being sharing
from our resources of
abundant blessings. A
report from each cluster was so exciting and
inspiring as we learned how churches throughout the western half of the conference are going outside their walls to share their mission.
The gathering ended with an awesome communion led by Rev. Dr. Ginny in which she invited us to take a big ol hunk of bread from
the loaf, rather than the dainty pinch we are
accustomed to doing, because God is offering
us abundant blessings to share.
Certificates and thank yous were distributed to Zion and all the churches who are
Five for Five, donating to all five of the UCC
offerings. Attending from Zion were Pastor
Kristin and Elaine Hudson. Anyone is invited to
attend these semi-annual gatherings. A Marshalese church from Springdale, AK had about
a dozen members attending and they had to
travel five hours to attend.

Regional Mission Fest

Hands Around the World: A Celebration of
God's People at Work in the World!
On Wednesday, August 17, the Lafayette
Cluster will host a missionary event at Ebenezer UCC in Levasy. We will begin with a potluck at 6pm, followed at 7pm by a MMSUCC
missionary presentation.

cant throw away a mans favorite boots. Youve
got to keep them and pass them down.

Unless you learned his heart had burned

Away the highest wall,
So love could claim the finest flame,
The richest prize of all
Unless you knew his smile could glow,
His eyes could understand
His lips could sing, his tales could wing
To find the fairest land
For these he left to those bereft
Of all his sunny ways;
And though they wept, I know they kept
His fortune all their days.
