MASA Phase 3
Anti Crime Social Network

Summary
Background: Pursuant to taking an active role in having a community safe from deviant and
criminal activities; communications with the neighboring apartment properties were necessary. The
sharing of information is an anti-crime methodology that is necessary for necessary for people with
the same goals to act as a community.
Subsequently, the pictures, surveillance video snips and work of mouth on occurrences of vandalism,
graffiti tagging, and car break ins were shared and discussed between us. And
information
ascertained from one property was shared with the other properties.
Problem: Without the necessary social networking tools via the internet, the sharing of
communications between me and the other properties is not convenient. It required that I walk to
each property and carry with me a tablet with pics and videos. And if the office managers were new
and unfamiliar with our area, it required me to give them a history lesson about Club Creek and how
much work it required from HPD and others to clean it up and with keeping it clean now.
Solution: Develop a plan for the effective communications between HPD storefronts and its
neighbors and refer to it as HPDs Anti-Crime Social Network. In doing so, multi-family properties
will be linked with each other and to their local HPD substation to ina consorted effort to combat
deviant and criminal activities.
Reviewing social networking sites such as Face Book, Twitter and others, I believe that the one that is
ideally suited is called Next Door, i.e., www. NestDoor.com.
As cited on Wikipedia, NextDoor.com differentiates itself by limiting access to posts to the people in
each neighborhood or those nearby, which can increase privacy.
Further since Next Door is already used by some of COH departments, expanding its use as a Citizen
Anti Crime Utility should be easily accomplished.
At this time, the site groups its users by neighborhood, such as zip code or neighborhood name.
However, HPD can create a group for each neighborhood storefront. Subsequently apartment
properties, businesses, employees, tenants and homeowners can easily share information with each
other.
Conclusion: The social interaction between citizens and local HPD store fronts will have a positive
impact by keeping people apprised of criminal activities near them and giving them the opportunity to
take precautions and to increase surveillance, which is a CPTED concept.
