Class P3 Date 9/2/06 Time 11.10 Duration 35mins 27
children

Prior Learning
Children have sorted themselves under two criteria using a carrol and venn diagram. They
have decided on their own sorting criteria in groups to sort objects into carroll and venn
diagrams.
Context :
Carroll and Venn diagram
Learning outcomes
• Children will begin to interpret data from a carroll and venn diagram
• Children will recall how to label a carroll and venn diagram
• Children will recall how to read the labels on a carroll and venn diagram

Lesson Introduction (2-3 mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 1
(Share lesson outcomes with children, introduce key learning point, link to previous learning, set lesson
expectations)
Boys and girls today we are going to look some more at our carroll and venn
diagrams. We are going to look at them and see what they tell us. We are
going to write down the different things they tell us.
Lesson phase 2 (10mins approx.)
(Part of lesson where teacher teaches, new material is outlined, demonstrated and explained)
Children gathered on the floor.
Teacher has a carroll diagram on the board with some pictures placed on. The
pictures are like the ones the children were using in the previous lesson.
Carroll
diagram.
Ask the children to look at the diagram. What do you think the labels would be? Venn
Take some answers from the children and discuss what are correct and what diagram.
are not. Pictures.

Not I want to all to look at the diagram. What does this carroll diagram tell you?
If children are not forthcoming with ideas teacher provides one.
Well when I look at this carroll diagram I can see that there are 4 green objects.
Can anyone see anything else from the diagram?
Write the interpretations on the board.
There are___ flying objects.
There are more green objects than not green objects.
There are more not flying objects than flying objects.
There are 2 green objects than can fly. Etc.

Teacher places a venn diagram on the board and places some pictures in the
diagram.
What labels could this diagram have?
Take a few suggestions and label the diagram.
What can I see from this diagram?
Children volunteer some descriptions and the teacher writes them on the board.

Lesson Development (15-20mins approx) Resources

Lesson phase 3
(The key section of the lesson. Children are given the opportunity to make personal sense of the material they
have encountered, information becomes learning. Time needs to be spent on activities and tasks that enable the
learners to manipulate and interrogate information in order to make sense of it.) Carroll
diagrams
Children are to interpret information from a carroll diagram or a venn diagram. and venn
They work in their groups and read the diagrams. They write down what they diagrams
find when interpreting the diagram from
previous
lesson.
Focus of teacher interactions during learning phase
(Plan and describe what the teacher will do or who the teacher will work with once all the children have settled to complete their
tasks)
Teacher will assist children with interpreting data. Teacher will go around the groups and ask
questions to guide the children who may be having some difficulty interpreting the data.
Have two students in the class for this lesson so students could also take a group and assist
with interpreting the diagram.

Lesson Conclusion (5-10mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 4
(Review, reflect and summarise lesson, ensure children know what they know, cement learning and
understanding and ensure that it is remembered)
Groups will come to the front and talk about their findings. They will show the
diagram to the class and read what they have found from the diagram.
Assessment (What will you assess and how will you assess it?)
What? Children can read and interpret information from a carroll/ venn diagram.
How? Observing the children while they are trying to read and interpret information. Asking
questions and observing the answers children give.
