Quick Sizer

Determining Your Sizing

Requirements with Quick Sizer
Business-Oriented, Proven,
Cost-Effective Sizing
Introduction
Quick Sizer translates business require
ments into technical requirements.
It deploys a proven sizing methodology
developed in close cooperation with
SAP technology partners. By determin
ing your sizing requirements, you can
ensure that your hardware purchase will
meet your business and performance
requirements. A financial benefit will be
lower costs and a reduced total cost of
ownership. Just consider the costs of
unused hardware beyond its initial
price, you also have to account for the
ongoing energy and maintenance costs
it will accrue.

An Economically Balanced System

Sizing is brought to your desktop via an
online application. Quick Sizer provides
up-to-date sizing information and guides
you through a structured questionnaire.
The business requirements are stated
as simple business-oriented figures such
as the number of users or expected
number of processed business process
es and documents. These figures are
translated by Quick Sizer into hardwareindependent requirements that enable
initial budget planning. Based on the
determined categories, SAP technology
partners can propose a complete
system configuration for your system
landscape and components.

The performance requirements of SAP

solutions are usually defined by the busi
ness requirements. Hardware and sys
tem performance, however, is measured
by technical performance indicators.
Matching these fundamentally different
performance figures is the goal of the
sizing process (see the following figure).
To this end, the information provided by
Quick Sizer can help you select the
hardware and system platform needed
to meet your business requirements.

Sizing Methods

Proven Sizing Methodology

Quick Sizer uses two independent

sizing approaches: user-based and
throughput-based. For small businesses,
the user-based sizing approach might
be appropriate. Business requirements
are determined by the number of users
performing specific business tasks.
Users are grouped per business task
according to their estimated usage activ
ity. Based on this information, a rough
sizing recommendation is provided. For
midsize, large, and complex businesses,
an additional throughput-based sizing is
recommended. Besides the number of
users, additional information about the
number of business processes and
business objects is used.

The sizing methodology is based on

performance measurements and is
validated by approximately 50,000 SAP
projects created per year. Over 14,000
customers have successfully sized
their hardware with Quick Sizer since
July 2005.2

The Result: A Balanced Set of

Needed Hardware Components
SAPs comprehensive sizing methodol
ogy helps ensure that all the needed
hardware components build a balanced
system infrastructure. Database and
application servers are adequately
equipped to fulfill the business require
ments. The right combination of process
ing performance (in SAPS),1 amount of
disk space (in MB), disk I/O, and main
memory (in MB) is proposed.

Cooperation with SAP Technology

Partners
Comprehensive sizing support is a
joint effort SAP has developed and
deployed the sizing methodology in
close cooperation with its technology
partners. Unified standards and goals
agreed upon by SAP and its technology
partners help ensure the right match of
hardware technology and business.

1. SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) is a hardware-independent unit that describes

the performance of a system configuration in the SAP environment. It is derived from the Sales
and Distribution (SD) benchmark, where 100 SAPS is defined as the computing power to handle
2,000 fully business processed order line items per hour. (For more information, go to
