The 21st Century Birds + Bees Talks

3 Tips to Make the Talk Easy + Effective
Amy Lang, MA
Tip #1
Stop thinking they are too young to learn about sex.
Children who learn about sex from their parents at an early age are more
protected from child sexual abuse; see their parents as the sex expert in
their lives; and know sex and sexuality are open topics in their families.
These kids tend to wait longer before they have sex, have fewer partners,
and use protection more frequently.
Starting earlier gives you and your kids many, many opportunities to have
short and sweet conversations over the years. Gone are the days of one
awkward and traumatic sex talk.
Tip #2
Whatever was or wasnt good enough for you wont work
today.
Your parents probably didnt do a fabulous job of having effective sex talks
with you. This can influence how you handle these conversations with
your own kids. Maybe you were lucky and had a lot of information,
regardless, the sex education of your youth will not serve your kids in
todays world. Things have changed and we need to as well.

Im on a mission to
help 1 million kids
grow up to be whole
and healthy adults by
making sure the
people who love and
care for them talk
about sexuality. A lot.

If you dont talk to your kids from an early age and regularly through out
childhood and adolescence, they will learn from the TV, their peers,
media, video games, music and Internet pornography. Frankly, they will
learn about sex from these sources anyway, but you have the choice to be
an active and involved guide for them or to cross your fingers and hope
they turn out okay.

And I need your help to

make this happen.

Dont ask dont tell doesnt work for kids (and it isnt fair)!
Just because your kid hasnt asked it doesnt mean they dont need to
know. All it means is that they havent asked. When you learn what is age
appropriate for kids to know, and then initiate the conversations with them,
your kids are safer and ultimately, healthier. If you show them you are
open to these talks, they will be more likely to confide in you.

responsibility its really yours. You decide. Who is the best sex educator
for you children? You or their world? My moneys on you.
