THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE FOR TEACHING
LISTENING
Jumbuh Prabowo, M. Pd.
Teaching listening skill causes some problems. One of them is related to media.
Involving media in delivering listening materials become important. It is because this skill
needs special treatment for engaging students in catching the materials. As stated by Cahyono
and Widiati (2009) that another factor which contributes to the success of listening instruction
is the media used to present the listening materials. They add that language laboratory, for
instance, can be used to provide language learners with various models of utterances spoken
by native speakers voices. However, not all teachers are eager to use media for supporting
teaching learning process. Thus, it causes obstacle in learning process.
Nowadays, teachers are demanded to be able to use technology as a media. The
advance of Information Technology (IT) has caused the development of the ways of learning
language in recent years. One important application of IT is using multimedia, which has
become a common way of learning. As the development of IT, many areas of English
learning have employed computers as learning tools. One of them is using computer as a
media in teaching listening. It is in the line with Krashens statement (1995). He said that for
the last 20 years, the computer has been perceived as a useful tool in the teaching of listening
skill, which has now been treated as a much more complex activity and is the cornerstone of
language acquisition.
Research Objectives

This research aims to reveal some problems dealing with teaching listening by using
software multimedia. The specific purposes are;
1. To find out the process of implementing teaching and learning listening by using
software multimedia
2. To find out how effective is multimedia software in teaching listening.
3. To find out students response toward the implementation of multimedia software
in teaching listening.
Significance of the Research
a. Theoretical significance
As far as theoretical implications are concerned, the studys results support the
generative theory of multimedia affects the degree to which learners engage in the
processes required to meaningful learning.
b. Practical Significance
This study represents a preliminary effort to empirically examine the use of
multimedia in teaching listening. That role belongs to the learning needs student. With
multimedia, the process of learning can become more goal oriented, more
participatory, flexible in time and space, and increase collaboration between teachers
and students. Multimedia enables learning to become fun and friendly, without fear of
inadequacies or failure.
The research employed a quantitative method by using true experimental design.
Experimental group is a group of student whose selection and experience are the same as the
control group and they received treatment, while control group is a group of students whose
selection and experience are exactly the same as the experimental group except that they do
not receive the treatment as experimental group.

The result showed that there are significant differences between scores of students of
the experimental and control groups in their listening post- test, and these differences are in
benefit of the experimental groups students performance.
Students response toward the use of multimedia software in learning listening is
positive; it showed by the questionnaire which was distributed. Student feel like to use
multimedia software in learning listening (65%). They also think that the software is very
helpful in understanding listening material because it provides them with a very clear
pronunciation, stress and intonation.
Students also are motivated to learn the content thanks to the engaging multimedia
elements as the students felt the multimedia elements made learning more interesting and less
dull when compared to traditionally spoken material.
