The Sun
For the first time in 16 years,
the Moorestown Township Public
Schools Board of Education and
Moorestown Education Association have reached a contract settlement prior to the current
agreements expiration.
The BOE and MEA began negotiations for a new contract nine
months ago and an agreement
was made on May 27 between
both parties, more than a month
before the June 30 expiration. The
new contract will run from July 1
to June 30, 2019.
I am pleased because this is
the first time in well over a
decade that our board has successfully reached an agreement
with the MEA in May, before the
existing contract ends Now we

4 THE MOORESTOWN SUN

Veterans
invited to join
4th of July
Parade
The Moorestown 4th of July
Parade will take place on Monday,
July 4 with a step-off time at
noon. The Parade Committee
wishes to invite the military veterans of Moorestown to participate in this celebration of our
freedom.
The committee feels the crowd
will respond wonderfully to seeing a float and/or marching contingent of those heroes who guaranteed that freedom. It shows
team spirit as well as giving the
spectators a sense that the veterans get it in terms of
Moorestown First.
So, if you did time in a combat
zone or didnt, wartime or peacetime, makes no difference to the
committee. Please accept its invitation since it was you who raised
your hand to serve this nation.
Assembly will be at the intersection of Central and Chester avenues. Please arrive early enough
to be counted and receive your
place in the lineup. Also, please
wear something that marks your
veteran status such as a military
ball cap, etc.

Please recycle
this newspaper.

Sun-splashed summer success?

he unofficial start of summer

has come and gone. With Memorial Day weekend in the
rearview mirror, the focus now is on
brighter days ahead the beach, the
sun, vacations and relaxation.
Many people throughout the region
took advantage of a hot and sunny Saturday to enjoy the beach that weekend,
and the Shore towns are hoping the
heat remains and the rain stays away
for the next three months.
And all New Jersey residents should
hope for the same, as the summer
Shore business is a huge part of the
states economy a $20 billion-plus industry, or half of the states total
tourism revenue, according to estimates.
In March, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno reported the states tourism industry
generated $43.4 billion in 2015, an increase of more than 3 percent over the

year before, with almost half of that

happening at the Shore. Many Shore
towns reported record beach badge
sales last summer, in large part because of lower gas prices which, for
the most part, still remain and glorious weather, as Guadagno put it.
The state spends millions of dollars
every year on advertising campaigns
seeking to keep New Jersey residents
home for the summer, and to attract
other states residents to the Garden
State as well. The extra push started a
few years ago following Hurricane
Sandy, with the Stronger Than the
Storm campaign, and it continues

today in different forms.

The state has an official tourism
website, www.visitnj.org, with information on events and things to do
throughout the state for the entire
year, with a special focus on our coastline for summer.
The proof will be in the pudding,
though, once turnout can be assessed
later this year or early next.
So, as we said in this space a few
weeks ago, make sure you travel local
this summer and visit the states wonderful beaches.
Theyre cheap, theyre close, and
theyre a lot of fun.
And while youre doing it, dont forget about us, either. Send us your vacation photos, and well let all your
neighbors know just how much fun
youre having.
In the meantime, pray for sun, lots of
it, and enjoy your time in it!

Friends of Percheron Park
thankful for Ray of Hope Award
The Friends of Percheron Park thanks
The Moorestown Sun for providing the opportunity through the Ray of Hope Award
contest to describe to its readers our favorite township-based non-profit organization Percheron Park. And we thank those
who voted for Percheron Park to receive
the Ray of Hope Award, the Ray of Hope
Fund of the Community Foundation of
New Jersey. Those votes indicated your
confidence in and enthusiasm for our project to create a useful, attractive and historically meaningful centerpiece for our town
center on Main Street.
Although the project has been delayed
by the soil remediation situation, it is grat-

ifying to know that our community members continue to support our efforts. When
the park is completed, the voters cannot
only enjoy the park, but also know that
they helped to make it happen.
Friends of Percheron Park,

Ann Langerhans, Julie Maravich,

Why is more not being done

about contaminated water?
How can the top town in South Jersey
have its drinking water contaminated with
little being done about it? Did the folks who
voted to give our beautiful, historic town
that honor know about the well water that
supplies the pitchers of lemonade to our
kids?

I want to thank Jim Mullen for all of his

finely written letters to The Sun concerning this quagmire. Never mind how this fiasco began by allowing the old RCA and
Lockheed plants to recklessly dump TCP
solvents into the soil back in the 1960s and
70s. That was then and this is now.
Its obvious his information has been accurately researched and thoughtfully put
together for the residents of Moorestown
to understand. Thats the essence of this
letter. The town of Moorestown needs to
understand the dire need to fix this problem. Its the elephant in the room that will
not quietly go away no matter how diligently the Town Council tries to dismiss the
issue by passing the buck back to the EPA
folks.

Burlington County Animal

Alliance in urgent need
of foster homes for dogs
Burlington County Animal Alliance is urgently seeking new
foster homes for its dogs.
BCAA is a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to rescue animals that have been in bad
living conditions and give them
amazing new homes with loving
families.
The only way it is able to rescue so many animals and get
them adopted is because of its
amazing network of fosters.
BCAA has no shelter and relies
on fosters to give them a nice temporary home until they are adopted.
Being a foster mom or dad is
such a rewarding experience. You
can foster puppies, moms with
puppies, older dogs and dogs that
may need special care. All bills

and expenses are paid for, so no

money comes out of your pocket,
This allows you to experience
having a pet while not having to
worry about paying for one. Fostering is a great opportunity to
give back to your community as
well, and is a fun way for
teenagers to get their service
hours for school!
Fostering saves the lives of
these dogs who would have never
survived if BCAA did not take
care of them.
If you are interested in being a
foster, want to see some of the
BCAA dogs or are looking to
adopt, visit the Petsmart in Centerton Square in Moorestown
every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m
or
email

end of a successful year with
their friends. For more information or to register, please visit the

On Monday, May 16, beloved

sister, Dona Allison (Kocher)
Camin,
slipped
this
mortal
coil
and
joined
heaven's choir.
She was 51.
She had the
voice of an
angel that will
never be forgotten. "Czarina
Starfire"
was the family
CAMIN
bard.
She
wrote prolifically and performed
in many venues. Always a free
spirit, Dona loved to talk in a variety of accents. She once convinced a suitor that she was a
French exchange student. He
never did catch on that it was all
an elaborate ruse.

In spite of her own significant

challenges, she was an extremely
thoughtful and generous person,
rescuing animals and serving
those less fortunate. Dona was
planning to move back East to
spend time with her family and
especially her granddaughter,
Madison Joan Montgomery, at the
time of her passing.
A special thanks to Larry
Brewer of Vernal, Utah, who was
a kind and generous friend.
Dona was preceded in death by
her parents, Joan (Lathbury) and
Donald Kocher of Moorestown.
She is survived by her loving son,
Donald Montgomery (Lynn) of
Delair; granddaughter, Madison
Joan; her sister, Karen Kocher
(Tom Schatz); and nephews, Nick
and Noah Schatz of Austin, Texas
and Nancy Kocher (Anita Biasi)
of Moorestown.
Please join the family in a celebration of Dona's life from 3 p.m.
to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 17 at the
Moorestown Community House.

In lieu of flowers, donations

may be made to the Salvation
Army of New Jersey.

letterS to the editor

LETTERS
Continued from page 6

To quote Scott Carew, the

problem is up-ticking.
Ironically, the same day Mr.
Mullens informative letter was
published, an article concerning
the same dilemma was reported
by The Sun. It briefly mentioned
the two proposed ordinances
were tabled, one for buying
equipment to put a temporary
Band-Aid on the Church Street
well and the other to pay expenses for an engineer to design the
temporary Band-Aid.
It seems Mr. Carew and his
team cannot even get the ball
rolling to address the elephant in
the room. The contamination of
our topsoil with TCP and TCE
began more than 50 years ago.
Surprisingly, the Annual Water
Quality Report arrived in everyones mailboxes the very same

day. Upon close examination, nine

out of the nine regulated substances spiraled to the top of the
acceptable range levels. That is
not acceptable to concerned residents. The numbers in every test
seemed suspicious. Each one coincidentally tested at the same
top of the range level of acceptance right down to the microgram. Thats a bit too odd for me
to swallow, (but not with tap
water).
Test results were rounded out
to the microgram. Not one of
those nine tests technically exceeded the top number. One of
those examples was TCP at 0.0700
detected with a range from 0.058
as the low to 0.0700 as the high.
Why did the numbers stop at
the crucial microgram point?
One iota over would have put the
results in the unacceptable column along with the violation column.
None of this should be tabled
by our township leaders.

Money Sense
Could You Retire Now?
A comfortable and secure retirement is every workers
dream, yet for many people,
thinking about it can be overwhelming. Retirement is a
goal to be relished, and the key
is to be prepared. Answering
these questions can help you
figure that out.
1. How do you want to spend
your retirement?
If you havent started to
think about it yet, now is the
time to figure out how you
would like to spend your days
in retirement. Will you be travelling? Playing golf ? Volunteering your time? Maybe start
your own business? Having a
clear vision will assist in calculating the finances you will
need to live comfortably while
enjoying your days in retirement.
2. Have you created a retirement plan?
With advances in technology and medicine, Americans
are living longer. According to
the Social Security website, the
average life expectancy for a
man turning 65 today is 83, and
for a woman it is 85. This is an
optimal time to meet with a Financial Advisor who can assist
in building a diversified portfolio designed to help provide for
long term growth while keeping pace with inflation. Do not
forget to budget for increasing
health care costs.
3. Will you outlive your assets?
Social Security is your first
line of defense against outliving your savings as your pay-

ments will continue for the rest

of your life, however, you may
want to consider delaying taking payments until age 70 to receive 76% more than if you
collect at age 62. Paying off
your mortgage prior to retiring
will eliminate one of your
largest monthly bills and allow
you to tap into your equity in
cases of emergency. Talk to
your Advisor about what percent of your savings you can
withdraw annually during retirement.
Disciplined investors may be able to
gradually draw down their savings in a way that will likely
last as long as they live.
Achieving the dream of a
comfortable, secure retirement
can be much easier when you
plan your finances. Engage
your spouse to envision how
you each plan on spending
your later years and how you
will finance your activities.
Deciding together now will
make you both happier in the
long run.

MHS track athletes mark achievements

Moorestown High School junior Brandon Outlaw broke a
school record in the 400 meters
with a 47.60 effort.
Teammate
and
classmate
Kevin Fox broke the school
record in the 800 meters

At Haddonfield Memorial High

Both boys are ranked No. 1 in
New Jersey in their event and in
the top 10 in the U.S. junior class,
top 50 U.S. overall.
Fox and Outlaw joined sprinters Zion Howard and Skyler
Clark for a new Moorestown High

School 4x400 relay record of 3:23.9

at a dual meet at Willingboro.
Earlier in the season, they
teamed with Clark and Melvin
Sheppard to establish a new
sprint medley mark of 3:31.66.
The previous 4x400 mark of 3:24.0
was set in 1975 by K. MacDougal,
D. King, J. Little and C. Maloney.
The old sprint medley record,
also set in 1975, was 3:34.5 by T.
Swain, J. Little, K. MacDougal
and L. Friedman.
At the South Jersey Relays, the
quartet of Outlaw, Howard, Clark
and Greg Gamble set a new standard in the 4x200 meter relay with

Two parties agree that final contract is fair for both

TWO
Continued from page 1
can all concentrate together on
providing the highest level of education for our students. I sincerely appreciate our partnership
with the MEA to accomplish
this, BOE President Kathy Goldenberg said.
It is a great feeling knowing
that we have a contract to start
the year, MEA President Lisa
Trapani said.
According to Goldenberg, the
MEA approached the BOE to have
informal meetings to discuss the
contracts in an open manner
without the use of outside negotiators. The BOE Negotiations
Committee consisted of negotiations chairman Peter Palko, BOE
member Caryn Shaw and Goldenberg, while the MEA was represented by negotiations chair

Heather Trapani and Lisa Trapani.

We believe that holding negotiations in this way allowed for a
more personal exchange of information and requests, Goldenberg said.
In the end, both sides consulted
legal opinions for approval of the
agreed upon issues, which resulted in the final language for a
memorandum of agreement that
was ratified by the MEA members and approved by the Board of
Education members.
Both parties felt the contract is
fair. Though not all parties could
get what they wanted, a mutual
understanding was made.
We feel that it is a fair settlement. Neither side achieved all of
its goals but we did achieve some
of them, Trapani said.
The contract highlights include:
Recognizing and rewarding
staff by maintaining the existing

salary guide with minor enhancements

MEA members continuing to
contribute the current maximum
allowable contributions toward
their health care throughout the
duration of this contract
Changes to the base health
care and specialty prescription
drug plans, which will provide
significant savings to both MEA
members and the district
An additional four hours of
professional development time
and more duty assignments
Currently, the existing step increases outlined in our previous
salary guide result in an average
of a 3.10 percent increase annually over the next three years plus
an average 0.35 percent raise,
yielding a 3.45 percent average
salary increase per year for the
next three years. This salary increase is offset by a $2.2 million
reduction in health-care costs,
achieved by negotiating health

benefit concessions, netting a significant reduction in health benefit expenditures for both the employees and the district, combined with the prescription mail
order and health care base plan
savings. The net percent increase
is actually 1.31 percent per year
for the next three years. With upcoming known retirements, we
currently anticipate an actual net
reduction in costs annually over
the past three-year contract,
Goldenberg said.
Goldenberg hopes to continue
to collaborate in the future with
the MEA, as they will need to
with the financial situation
Moorestown faces. She feels the
district does not receive its fair
share of state funding.
Our political leaders need to
structure a method to adopt a fair
funding formula for all districts
throughout the state. For far too
long, select districts are receiving
disproportionate amounts of

funding year after year. Other districts, such as Moorestown, continue to gain more students with
disabilities that require additional supports, without adequate additional funding assistance from
our state regulators. We are honored to educate all Moorestown
students; however the funding
from the state should follow the
students needs, Goldenberg
said.

Barnett uses mixed media in art

BARNETT

the former consignment shop
Nifty Thrifty and a teacher at
Perkins Center for the Arts, has
been an artist for years. Her love
for art started when she was
young, watching her father copy
figures from the kitchen wallpaper. She thought it was magical
and still views making art as a
spiritual experience.
"It's healing, enriching and a
significant part of my life," Barnett said.
Barnett went to a high school
of arts and music in New York
and earned a bachelors of fine
arts degree from Rutgers University and a masters of fine arts degree in book arts/printmaking
from the University of the Arts in
Philadelphia. She exhibits at
local art shows and has received
many awards.
Barnett is a mixed media artist
using mediums such as handmade paper, found objects,
acrylics, pastel, printmaking, watercolor, ceramics and most recently fabric. She said she was really inspired when she spent a
year in Japan and learned about
the printmaking process there
and painting on different materials. No matter what media she
works in, though, what seems to
be created is a work dominated by
texture, pattern and design with a
touch of imagination.
Im interested in materials
and often mix them together,
Barnett said.

Wren by Ellen Barnett, alcohol ink and painted paper, is part of her
exhibit at the Moorestown Library.
Barnett has been featured at
the Moorestown Library before.
Due to the success of her first
show, she was asked to come back
and have her worked featured
again.
Barnett hopes those who come
to the show recognize other materials can be used as artwork and
are inspired to create their own
art. Barnett believes anything
can be a piece of art.
I hope (my art) would encourage people to do more artwork, if
they are interested, or take a
class. I think that everything we
look at is really art, from utensils

to dishes; everything around us is

art, Barnett said.
Barnett will be at the June 8 reception to talk about her art with
interested visitors. She will also
be displaying her alcohol ink tiles
for purchase, a new medium she

Girls Youth Appreciation Day

Special to The Sun

The Moorestown Lacrosse Club hosted a Girls Youth Appreciation Day on May 15. All of the players from fourth through eighth grade from the Moorestown Lacrosse Club were
invited on to the field at halftime of the varsity game vs. Suffern High School to learn a cheer and take a picture with the JV lacrosse team from Moorestown High School.

Contest encourages preservation of local habitats

This is a way to display the
abundance of natural beauty in
Moorestown so we can all appreciate what we have all around us,
photo contest coordinator Bill
Creekmore said.
STEM was founded in 1972 as a
grassroots organization with a
mission to preserve, protect and
enhance the natural environment
of Moorestown for today's and future generations. STEM sponsors
the photo contest annually to
show its appreciation of nature.
(The photo contest is important to) encourage people to preserve areas of our town and capture the beauty within these
spaces. I personally love Boundary Creek. Some of us call it the

healing place. Our mind can be

relaxed by observing nature,
Creekmore said. Photography
allows us to take a closer look at
our surrounding nature and capture it for others as well as ourselves. The results are a form of
artwork.
Adults and students 18 or
younger are invited to participate
and submit photos of the nature
found in Moorestown.
All photos must have been
taken after June 2015 and submitted as five-by-seven inch prints
with the following information on
the back: title, name, address and
e-mail address, adult or student
(18 years old or younger), and location and date of photo taken in
Moorestown. Digital editing and
adjustments are accepted, but not
photo montages. Please mail entries to STEM, P.O. Box 704,
Moorestown, N.J. 08057 by June

The photo contest and picnic

have been held in Moorestown for

16 years. The event is held to have

STEM members and guests meet,

have professional judges choose
the winners of submitted photos,
and enjoy discussing the photography results during a potluck

(People should come to) enjoy
the company of others with a
common interest in nature and
why certain photos are picked as
winners though actually they
are all winners, Creekmore said.
The picnic is being held on
June 26 at 4 p.m. at 12 Pepperbush
Lane in Moorestown. The judges
for the contest will be Bob
Laramie of Laramie Photography Studio and Gretchen Rector
