ThisFoundationlevelisintendedtohelpallnovicecomputersgetuptospeedquickly.This
manualwillalsohelpmoreexperienceduserswhohavelittletonoexperiencewithExcel2007
andtheribboninterface.

Thismanualwillcoverdifferentfeaturesoftheinterface,giveabriefoverviewofallthetabsin
theribbon,showusershowtoprint,coversomesimplescenarios,andcoverthebasicsof
formatting.Bytheendofthismanual,usersshouldbecomfortablewithcreatinganew
spreadsheet,workingwithbasicformulae,makingtheirlookprofessionalandpresentable,and
thensavingandprintingthespreadsheet.

Ingeneral,themanualisgearedtowardsthenovicecomputeruser.Ifyouareaninstructor,

Occasionally,thismanualmayreferencewherecertainkeysareonthekeyboard(suchas

whoworkswithnumbershaslikelyusedExcelorsomeotherspreadsheetapplication(suchas
Lotus123)inoneformoranother.Inthislesson,wewilllookatwhatsnewinthe2010
version,howtoopenandclosetheprogram,andoutlinesomeofthethingsyouwillseeinthe
program.

IfyouarenewtoExcelandspreadsheetsingeneral,thevastarrayoffeaturesandcontrolscan
seemquitedaunting.However,oncewecovertheworkingsofaspreadsheetandhowtodeal

WhatisMicrosoftOfficeExcel2010?

MicrosoftOfficeExcel2010isthefourteenthversionofMicrosoftsspreadsheetprogram.A
spreadsheetisessentiallyalargeflexiblegridthatisusedtoholdinformation,usually
numerical.

Thespreadsheetismadeupofrowsandcolumns.Theintersectionofarowandcolumnis
calledacell:

UsingExcel,youcananalyzelargeamountsofdata,movesetsofdataaroundtogetadifferent
pictureofyourfigures,andgenerateanumberofdifferentchartsanddiagramstohelp
summarizethedata.

WhatsNewinExcel2010?

Excel2010sinterfacedoesnotmakeuseofmenuslikeyoumaybefamiliarwith.Instead,Excel
usesatabsystemthatgroupslikecommandsatthetop.Thisinterface,calledtheribbon,was
firstusedinsomeprogramswiththeOffice2007suite:

Slicersarevisualcontrolsthatallowforfasterfilteringofdata.They
floatabovePivotTableandCUBEobjects,allowingyoutoquickly
filterthedatashowninthatobject.

SparkLines

SparkLinesareminichartsthatfitintoasinglecell.Theyofferquick
informationaboutthedataspecifiedinaroworcolumnandarevery
usefulwhenspottingtrendsinlargegroupsofdata.Forexample,itis

Excel2010usesafileformatknownasMicrosoftExcelXMLformat.XML(extensiblemarkup
language)isaveryflexibletypeofcomputerlanguage.XMLissimilarinnaturetoHTML(Hyper
TextMarkupLanguage,thelanguageusedtobuildWebpages),butisdesignedmoreforthe
communicationofinformationratherthanthepresentationofinformation.XMLwas
incorporatedintotheOffice2007fileformattingsystemtofacilitatecommunicationofdata
