7.1. A strain gage is to be fabricated from advance wire having a diameter of 0,001 in and
resistance of 25 /in. The gage is gage is to have a gage length of 2 in and resistance of
500 . Design a grid configuration
7.3. Write a concise description of a foil type resistance strain gage. Include the alloys employed
and cover the role of the Carrier and the Tabs.
- Foil : The foil is classified by its alloy type, they are Advance alloy, Karma, Isoelastic
Alloy and also Ultrathin metal fabricated by Photoetching process. Those material/alloys
used because of their high conductivity and heat resistant to temperature.
A. Advance Alloy : Has high strain sensitivity, Small grid and high gage factor compared
to other alloy
B. Isoelastic Alloy : Has superior fatigue life, compatible for dynamic stress testing.
C. Karma Alloy
: High strain sensitivity, mostly used for measurement and has good
stability so common for used in static testing.
- The Role of:
A. Carrier : because of the fragile typical of the foil, so we use Carrier as a backing material
during photoetching process,. Carrier also facilitate width for installation and also the carrier
for electricity to get through metal grid.
B. Tabs : Functioned as an adhesive which is used to transmit the surface displacement
from the specimen to gage grid without any distortion.
7.5. Write a specification describing the procedure to be followed by laboratory technician in
installing strain gage on components fabricated from engineering polymers.
1. Position the gage and terminal patch with transparent tape
2. Role back the gage and terminal patch
3. Apply adhesive over the bonding area
4. Reposition the gage andterminal patch with tape, using finger pressureto force out the
excessive adhesive.
7.7. Determine the system sensitivity for a bridge with a single active gage having Rg = 350
and Sg = 2.05 if r = 3 and the bridge voltage is 5V
Which :
Ss = r Sg Pg x Rg /(1 + r)
Which:
Ss = System
Sensitivity
Pg = Power Diccipated
Pg = V2 / R = 25/350 = 0.071 W
Ss = 3 x 2.05 x 0.071 x 350 / (1 + 3) = 7.664
Rg = Gage resistance
vo = r x Vs x Sg x / (1 + r)2
vo = 1 x 6 x 2.06 x 1200 .in/m. /(1 + 1)2 = 3708 in/m V
7.11. A 350 strain gage with Sg = 2.07 is employed in a single arm wheatstone bridge with r
= 1. If the gage is subjected to a strain of 1600.in/m. Determine the reading on a 4 1/2- digit
DVM if
A. Vs (Volt) = 2 and Amplifier = 10

7.15. If the bridge and gage of exercise 7.14 respond to a strain of 1400 m/m, determine the
trace deflection if an oscilloscope having a sensitivity of 1mV per division is used for the
measurement.
Given in Exercise 7.14 :
Impendance 10M
Rg = 350
Sg = 3.35
r = 5 and Vs = 9V

7.17. Determine the sensitivity of gage-bridge-galvanometer system if four equal arm bridge
(R1=R2=R3=R4=Rg) is used and Rg =350 , Sg = 2.07, Pg = 0.25W, RG = 100
