Export Processing Zones introduction:

Government of Pakistan is established special zones in those specific areas, where


export oriented industries and businesses available, to increase export and to earn
maximum foreign exchange. Export Processing Zones proliferated in the late 20th
century. Most EPZs located in developing countries. EPZs employing increased
from 22.5 to 43 million people in 2003. The basic objectives of EPZs to enhance
foreign exchange earnings and to generate employment opportunities. EPZs also
known as Special Economic Zones in some countries.

Establishment of EPZ Authority:


Some countries have created special authority for EPZ called as Export Processing
Zone Authority. Just like the official body to promote, attract and facilitate foreign
investment in EPZs. Like-wise Pakistan also established an EPZ Authority in 1980.
EPZ Authority has adopted an Open Door Policy' to attract foreign investment.

Core purpose of EPZ Authority:


Provide special areas where potential investors would find a congenial investment
climate, promotion of foreign direct investment free from cumbersome procedures,
development of backward diversification of export local investment, development
of management, up-gradation of skill, transfer of technology, generation of
employment forward linkages.

Description of main EPZs Cities:


Karachi:
Karachi is the largest and most populous metropolitan city of Pakistan and it is
main seaport and financial center. The city has an estimated population of over
23.5. It is Pakistan's center of banking, industry, economic activity and trade, and is
home to Pakistan's largest corporations, including those involved in textiles,
shipping, automotive industry, entertainment, the arts, fashion, advertising,
publishing, software development and medical research. The city is a hub of higher
education in South Asia and the Muslim world.

Sialkot:
Sialkot is the world's largest producer of hand-sewed footballs, with local factories
manufacturing 40 to 60 million footballs a year, amounting to roughly 70% of
world production. Sialkot is also providing Dental Instruments, Surgical
Instruments, Beauty Instruments and other all sorts of Hospital Equipments. Other
important industries in Sialkot include Leather Garments, Musical Instruments,
Surgical and Dental Instruments, Sportswear including Martial arts wear, Gloves,
Badges, Seat and Walking Sticks, Cutlery, Hunting Knives, Air guns and Shotguns.
These are all export-oriented businesses and earn billions of dollars every year in
foreign exchange. There are several other allied industries which are working day
and night as vendors for the automobile industry of Pakistan. Sialkot has also a rich
tradition of producing wooden and steel furniture, rubber products, cooking
utensils, bicycles, Rubber tyres, tubes and shoes.

Gujranwala:
Gujranwala is a commercial and industrial center, playing a major role in the
Pakistan economy. It has a number of textile mills, cutlery industry and large
agricultural-processing plants. Major exports include rice, sanitary fittings, textiles,
plastic furniture, pots, room coolers, Gas heaters, gas stoves, agricultural tools and
equipment, electrical equipment, carpets, glass goods, surgical equipment, leather
products, auto parts, military machinery, transformers, hosiery, washing machines,
rice huskers, agricultural implements, motorcycles, food products and industrial
motors.
