Introduction
Whilethepreviouspage(SystemElements)introducedthefundamentalelementsofthermalsystems,as
wellastheirmathematicalmodels,nosystemswerediscussed.Thispagediscusseshowthesystem
elementscanbeincludedinlargersystems,andhowasystemmodelcanbedeveloped.Theactual
solutionofsuchmodelsisdiscussedelsewhere.

TheEnergyBalance
Todevelopamathematicalmodelofathermalsystemweusetheconceptofanenergybalance.The
energybalanceequationsimplystatesthatatanygivenlocation,ornode,inasystem,theheatintothat
nodeisequaltotheheatoutofthenodeplusanyheatthatisstored(heatisstoredasincreased
temperatureinthermalcapacitances).
