Accounting personal statement

Accounting is like Art. You have to analyse every aspect before making a just decision.
A teacher of mine once told me that if you were good at art, you would be good at accounts. It was hard to find
his logic at first, but having spent two years doing GCSE Art and a further two on Accounts A Level, it all began
to make sense. You need logic; everything has a set order and method. Each piece is placed carefully and has
a high significance amongst its environment. You need analytical skills. Take apart every piece of information
and use it to make your own decisions.
Having excelled in both these exams, I can proudly say that I possess the skills that will lead me to university. I
have developed an interest in studying accounts or and would therefore like to continue doing so at university.
The course that I would like to do at university is Business Accounts or Accounts and Finance. I feel that the
two subjects combine well with one another and on many occasions I have founds that my knowledge of one
has helped me with the other. Studying Maths and Business has also provided me with logic and a greater
understanding of various concepts and methods. I have become more flexible in identifying what concepts
need to be used and when, thus, helping me achieve the greatest results possible. I have the ability to pick up
skills and knowledge quickly and am independent enough to conduct my own study and research. On many
occasions at college I have taught myself various chapters in maths in order to remain ahead of the class.
My main ambition for the future is to become an Accountant Executive or a Financial Advisor. I am hoping
university will provide me with an understanding of the business world as well as offering me a wide range of
choices and connections after my course. However, I have also helped to teach mathematics. I have taken
part in a project at school where we taught younger pupils the basics of maths. I also helped to tutor many of
my classmates in preparation for exams, which they found helpful. I enjoyed teaching and so this will be my
third choice of career.
Outside of studying, one of my many passions is Art. I enjoy visiting art galleries and studying art in depth. My
favourite type of art is symbolism and surrealism and my favourite artists are Dali and Escher as they both
deal with double possibilities. Recently, however, I have developed a new interest in contemporary art, of
which I have done a number of paintings on canvas on commission for friends and family who have all been
pleased with my work.
Most of my spare time on the weekend is taken up by my part time job as a sales associate at Skechers USA,
Bullring, Birmingham. I have been working at Skechers since the opening of the store in September 2003 and
am one of only two of the original members of staff left. This is an advantage for me as I can offer the highest
level of customer service and have a good knowledge of the overall running of the store, which makes me
committed, reliable and adaptable as I have found that I need to adjust myself to the many changes that have
occurred over the year. My job has also taught me to be more tolerable and patient with others.
I have thoroughly enjoyed college and believe that university is the next step for me. College and my part time
job have changed me as a person. They have given me a greater sense of independence and success. I feel
that college has really made me grow and has introduced me to a wider range of people. I have opened up to
people more and am now a better team player as I have learnt to listen to others and take in their opinions. I
have become accepting to other cultures and beliefs and feel that I am much more open-minded.
I hope that you have analysed this piece carefully enough to offer me a place at your university, and trust that
you have yet to see the bigger picture of me.

Architecture Personal Statement

I have always had a considerable interest in architecture, ever since studying it briefly during my art GCSE
course. Since then I've looked at architecture in detail through my work in as-level art, and in as-level
technology; where I spent 4 months on an architecture related project, and gathered a huge amount of
architectural knowledge. I think my versatility in coming up with solutions for proposals of any sort, and my
articulate manner of communicating these solutions would suggest I would be well suited to the job of an
architect. I believe it would be a very interesting career to pursue and could be very rewarding for a, hard
working, creative, intellectual person such as myself. I also think my enthusiasm towards the subject would
make the transition from 6th form to university much easier
During my time at school I have gathered many key skills and have absorbed a great deal of knowledge. Out
of everything I had been taught through my secondary education, my 'creative' and 'problem solving' skills
were the most influential and had become my greatest assets. The subjects I chose to study for my AS-levels
helped further my technical ability within these two areas. While mathematics and computing have enhanced
my problem solving skills, 'design and technology' and art have enriched my artistic and creative capabilities.
When researching architecture during my as-level technology course I learnt how to produce a wide range of
imaginative research and while looking at my two favorite architects; Frank Loyd Wright and Eero Saarinen, I
was greatly inspired and developed modern design strategies and imaginative ideas. From all the books I've
read, the Internet sites I view, and the programs I watch, I've gathered a clear understanding of architecture
I worked at the Imax cinema in Waterloo and then in Merton council for my work experience. In Merton council
I was able to use my design and computing skills and I gathered a variety of other useful attributes while
working there. In the human resources department I helped design a 20-page booklet about the dangers of
smoking, and I was also given tutorial lessons on how to use a computer-aided design (CAD) system in the
technology department. I now work part time on a flexible schedule for a catering business, and have worked
at many high profile events, including 'party in the park' for the prince's trust
I take pride in the fact that I readily contribute and take part in school charities, including a charity football
tournament where I captained my team to the semi-finals. I was a class prefect and spent time after school
organizing activities for younger students, including a chess tournament. I now regularly help out with after
school activities, including guiding for prospective applicants on open days and providing general assistance. I
was asked to take part in a gifted and talented enrichment program along with several other promising
students during my secondary education. I have now accumulated several awards and certificates, my most
significant being my 'supreme award', which I received for my academic achievements and my contribution as
a student

Art and Design personal statement

To take a journey in art is to follow a path that is never ending; you will never know all there is to know or see
and discover all there is out there. You will find yourself 10 years down that path still discovering new things,
getting excited and inspired by the most ordinary of things, question the media to which we are exposed,
whether it be the design of a C.D.cover, a window display, the layout of a room or even the shapes and lines of
a shoe.
For those of us that choose art, it is not a career or a hobby, but a passion, a way of life. We all see the world
differently, and when I take a moment to look around me, my mind starts to buzz with ideas about my material
surroundings. My future, as I see it, will have art as an anchor. I would hope that after completing my degree, I
would continue my studies in my chosen field and make a professional career out of art. I couldn't possibly
imagine never being connected to the art community and to a world of talent and imagination where anything
is truly possible.
Because art is a passion to those who choose to study it, I believe that its students really do put their hearts
and souls into their work and push themselves that extra mile. When I was in my portfolio course I was so
captured by exploring the different disciplines, mixing and experimenting with colours , textures, light and
different mediums and effects, that I found myself taking my work future than was asked of me, out of pure
enjoyment and curiosity. I currently work in retail and I jump at the chance to dive into any kind of art project for
work like designing adverts for our advertising, shop display and window dressing.
I do commissioned work on an individual basis, which I love. I love having a project to focus on at all times, to
give me focus and goals and to inject my never ideas into. I'm doing a part time course in fashion as I feel it
has become my main passion having now being exposed to all the disciplines and variety in the art sector.
What captivates me most about this discipline, Is the opportunity to mix others with it, like photography, graphic
design, painting or even something as simple as using print for your textile design. It also allows me to both
design and create my work in three dimensions. I love the design process but working with my hands to
accomplish a finished product is the most rewarding for me.
It is fair to say that since my childhood art has been my direction and an integral part of my life, from helping to
design and make the sets and costumes for school plays to making my dolls clothes.
Keeping in touch with the art community is vital for me, it is a community where no matter where you live or
whatever your background, you can meet with like minded people to interact with and discus views ,exchange
ideas learn new things, find new artists and see new exhibitions. Seeing live bands play whether local or
internationally recognised is also something that I get great enjoyment and inspiration from. I see music in the
same way I see art, composed of simple riffs and beats all put together to different timing and order to create a
piece of work delivered with passion and energy, and so I have a great respect for anyone who shares that
talent and gift with the rest of the world.
Likewise, cinema and photography hold the same qualities for me. The idea here of capturing a still image
which can be so ordinary and make is appear in a different light, giving the viewer and insight into how you see
things. To make the ordinary extraordinary and deliver it for all to see.
I'm choosing to study abroad to meet new people and discover a different culture, change my entire
environment and move out of the comfort zone, which I think is where most people tend
to produce their best work.
There is no right or wrong in art and it can be translated a million different ways.
Art is not a career choice, it is a life choice. It is my choice and always will be.

Business and Management Personal Statement

I come from a background where my family has been in the retail trade for the last hundred years. Whist I was
growing up I have been actively taking part in the running of the business. My family has given me the
opportunity to further myself in achieving my goals. I believe studying at university will give me the opportunity
to progress in the understanding I currently have in Business Studies and ICT. I believe that I can combine my
interest in Business Studies and Accounts to excel in Business Management
At my secondary school I was handed the privilege and the responsibility of being head prefect. My
responsibilities included attending meetings with the school principal and school staff. I believe these installed
essential characteristics such as leadership
I was also the school football captain and represented the school at many inter-schools sports activities.
Furthermore I represented the Wildlife Conservation Society of Zambia, which is a charitable organisationfor
the protection of wildlife in Zambian Game Parks. Part of my duties included giving talks to other students
concerning conservation and wildlife. I thoroughly enjoyed this particular segment of my work because
conservation is an issue close to my heart
I am presently enrolled at Redbridge College in Romford where I am studying three A2 courses in
Mathematics, ICT and Business Studies, and one AS-Level in Accounts. I do take part in several sports
activities not only to remain in good physical shape but also meet new people. I did not achieve all my targets
but I am confident that with extra effort and help from my tutors I will push past my predicted grades. I have
drawn up a plan of what needs to be done over the next few months in achieving this. Over the last year I have
developed at a personnel level. I understand that the onus is on me to push myself to achieve my ambitions
Outside of college I have a passion for sports both for enjoyment purposes and maintaining fitness. Football is
at the centre of my love for sport, but I also enjoy and participate in other sporting activities such as cricket,
squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis and long distance running. I am hoping to carry on these activities
whilst conducting my studies at university. I believe sports play an important role in providing a balance
between education and physical wellbeing
It has long been my ambition to complete my studies at a British university. As it is well established Britain has
the finest reputation for higher education around the world. A degree from a British university will assist me in
my future career. I am very much looking forward to educational challenges that university has in store for me.
I am also looking forward to meeting the different cultures and backgrounds that will exist of any university. But
most importantly I believe I have the prerequisites not only to achieve a good degree but to progress at a
personal level. This would act as a foundation for any future success in the business world.

Chemistry personal statement

Chemistry is in my opinion the most important of the sciences today. As a science of matter and its properties,
Chemistry can be applied to almost any situation from forensics through medicine to environmental
sustainability. It is this practical side of Chemistry that has made me want to study it at university. I am
particularly interested in Organic Chemistry and I enjoy working out the outcomes of various reactions and
naming the products with systematic nomenclature. Another aspect of Chemistry that I am interested in is
Quantum Chemistry which has a strong overlap with some of my favourite modules of Physics. I am drawn to
its often theoretical and experimental nature.
My studies in Geography and World Development have stimulated an interest in Green Chemistry. I feel that
this is very important due to climate change and other environmental issues that affect us. Research in making
processes more sustainable and less harmful to the environment is crucial to contributing to the future of
planet. I have gained the position of subject ambassador for Chemistry; which involves representing the
Chemistry department during open evenings and helping out fellow classmates with their work. Within the
open days I have demonstrated experiments to future students and their parents, helping them to understand
the content of the course and whether they should take Chemistry as an A level subject. I have also been
nominated by my school for the Oxford University chemist of the year award, due to my attitude and
achievements.
During my ISAs I demonstrated a strong practical ability and achieved full marks for my practical skills. This
reflects my ability to work independently and my competence at handling lab apparatus. I also volunteer to
help out in a chemistry lesson once a week; this is an excellent opportunity to help others and put my
knowledge and expertise to practical use. I am reading "The Problems of Chemistry" by W. Graham Richards
and "The Consumers Good Chemical Guide" by John Emsley both of which have stimulated my interest in
practical applications of Chemistry. Another book "Chemistry: Facts, Patterns and Principles" by W.R. Kneen
adds to my general knowledge of Chemistry. I have also joined the Royal Society of Chemistry.
I have excelled at all of my chosen subjects and have demonstrated a commitment and ability to work above
the average level in each one. For example during my GCSEs I was picked as one of the top ten geographers
in my year to take an AS in World Development a year early. While taking my A2 in World Development last
year I researched and wrote a report on a local wind farm. This project was a good opportunity to work on my
own initiative and helped me develop important communication and analysis skills. I also represented Kenya in
a Model UN General Assembly conference where I learned about other cultures and gained an insight into
world politics. My studies in Maths and Physics both provide me with subject matter, problem solving and
calculating skills that support my primary interest in Chemistry.
Outside school I have an enthusiasm for the sport of dog agility. My dogs and I have won many competitions
and we have competed at Crufts and other major events. I also train and work with dogs for other people. This
is a considerable responsibility, but one that I enjoy. I also have experience caring for a disabled child which
has made me more mature.
In common with my friends, I enjoy music and travel. I have played the drums in several bands and have
backpacked through a number of countries, including Brazil, Peru and Thailand. I hope to take advantage of
the social opportunities at university as well as the academic ones.
In summary, my skills and experiences make me well suited to study Chemistry at university. I intend to tackle
the course with the same determination and interest that I have shown to date and to make a significant
contribution during my studies.

Computer Games Programming personal statement

I find the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Games Physics interesting and so I have decided to study a course
to include these areas. I am currently studying an A level in Information Technology in which I have used Visual
Basic in Microsoft Excel and Access. At home I have used the actionscript language in Macromedia Flash to
build an interactive personal website. I found this aspect of computing very interesting and so I will really enjoy
programming in C++ and other programming languages. I am also studying an A level in Mathematics that I
really enjoy. This would be useful for many parts of the course such as games physics.
When Ive played computer games in the past I have always wanted to be able to create something similar.
Consequently, the computer games programming course stood out as something that I really wanted to do. I
have used some software programs such as Microsoft Visual Basic, Softimage XSI ESP 3.0, Discreet 3DS
MAX 5 (evaluation version) and Maya Personal Learning Edition. I would like to see peoples enjoyment when
playing a game, knowing that I took part in producing it.
I have emailed a few programming companies such as Valve Software, id software, Lionsoft, Electronic Arts
and Codemasters explaining my situation and asking whether it would be better to take a games programming
course or a software development course and learn game specific items afterwards or in my spare time. All of
the replies advised me to take the computer games programming course as this way I would already possess
the games programming knowledge.
Undertaking my work experience as a sales assistant in a computer store allowed me to develop skills such as
working in a team and dealing with customers. Although I was working with others a lot of the time, I also had
to work independently. This allowed me to use my own initiative and solve problems.
Whilst attending Sutton High Sports College, I have done a large amount of voluntary work. During years 10
and 11, I helped with the schools open days and sports days where I did scoring. I also took part in after
school activities such as playing music. Outside of school I have helped at Darby and Joans which is for old
aged pensioners where they can get together for company, and to talk and play bingo. Year 12 saw me helping
with the year 6 induction day, and assisting with scoring on both the schools open day and the St. Helens
Athletic Finals. Participation in a first aid course gained me a certificate in Emergency Aid in the workplace for
Appointed Persons. This involved areas such as resuscitation and control of bleeding.
Hobbies and interests include reading books; the genres preferred being science fiction and horror. I also like
playing piano of which I am currently working towards grade 8, and I have played The Skaters Waltz at Parr
Hall (a concert hall) in Warrington. I enjoy using my computer for playing games, including playing games
online, and for using the internet to keep up to date with current news in the computing and gaming world, new
hardware and software releases.
My interests cover a wide area, which I believe will help me in both academic and social life at university.
My aim is to become a computer games programmer developing any type of game for PC or console, and I
believe that a university course will help me achieve my goal.

Computer Science personal statement

My three major interests and passions are Computer Science, Maths and Music, and I believe that there is a
creative fusion between all these disciplines. I engage wholeheartedly in these areas both in my school
courses and out of school, and hope that I will be able to continue doing so on my chosen course and in the
extra-curricular opportunities at university.
Computer Science has quite naturally come to be my chosen field. At the age of 7, I took to playing the piano,
which planted the first seeds of my interest in defined logical patterns and structure. My introduction to
computing was via the logic of spreadsheets, but I then progressed to using BASIC for several applications
outside lessons, including programming my own version of Logo and an analogue clock. A major recent
achievement of mine has been designing a database-driven website for my schools Maths department,
including multi-format homework question publication and report generation. This is extensively used by the
department, and other departments have approached me to provide them with similar websites. This project
was nominated and then short-listed for the final ten of the New Statesmans New Media (Educational)
award.
I look forward to studying Artificial Intelligence, and have made my own minor foray into this area by designing
and developing a computer-powered Connect 4 player using a complex minimax procedure. I also
investigated recurring function execution to simulate the fill function of a paint package, an algorithm of which
was used to develop a random maze generator. Such mathematical-based logic led to an increased appetite
especially for researching the use of computing with mathematics - I extensively investigated perfect
numbers, determining the 8th perfect number (2305843008139952128).
I involve myself in the full life of the school and am pleased to have ways of passing on my enthusiasms to
others. I have been appointed a Maths Prefect, which involves running a weekly Maths club, and also helping
younger students in work recovery sessions. I was also elected onto the School Council for 4 years in my
previous school.
My passion for music has further developed in secondary school and led to eager participation in school
musical productions for four years as the main pianist (which led to my employment as accompanist for a
professional opera singer and singing teacher). I have achieved grade 8 at piano, and have thoroughly
enjoyed performing regularly at a variety of venues such as weddings, retirement homes, at charity events, for
the visually impaired, and most of all, the opportunity to conduct an orchestra at Fairfield Hall performing my
own composition. I am looking forward to playing the 3rd Movement of Tchaikovskys 1st Piano Concerto with
the school orchestra this December, exhibiting my love for classical music, especially given that my favourite
works are those of Debussy and Tchaikovsky.
I was delighted recently when I was given the opportunity to combine my musical pursuits and computer
interests by my employment for a commercial software company writing music. I have much appreciated being
able to develop my above interests alongside enjoyment of hobbies such as Table-tennis, chess, and reading
of a broad spectrum of books.

Economics personal statement

Economics is a rigorous discipline to which I find myself intensely attracted. It is inspiring how the formal and
analytical nature of Economics can be used to tackle such distinctly organic and complex concepts as welfare
relating society; the enmeshing of mathematized "high theory" and "real world" dilemmas that Amartya Sen
embraced. Furthermore, an Economics related degree would allow me to explore, in depth, a range of
exciting, multidisciplinary topics as diverse as game theory, a subject only hinted at A Level and which I would
love to explore in university, international trade and development studies. An eagerness to venture beyond the
A Level syllabus led me to be selected for Economics at Durham University. I was also selected for Physics
and Politics 'Masterclasses' due to my aptitude in these subjects.
I am an avid reader of 'The Economist', 'Time Magazine', and 'The Times' having an innate interest in the
machinations of the wider world. This year I had an opportunity to experience the captivating, society, culture
and economic diaspora of Kenya and Italy. Firstly as a member of Africamp 2002, where I worked with the
rehabilitation of street children in Nairobi and was part of a team that reached the summit of Mt. Kenya and
secondly with a Comenius Italian exchange. The Kenyan expedition in particular was an eye opener; not only
because of the truly different lifestyle, but also because of the hardships we had to face and the critical survival
skill we had to learn in a short space of time. Also, it formed an integral part of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold
Award of which I am nearing completion. The experience made me aware of the limitations of the market
mechanism and distributive inefficiency that leads to severe inequality, yet also how Economics can help to
alleviate the poverty in such countries, for example, through microcredit loans.
My choice of AS and A Levels, along with other academic achievements, help consolidate and support my
desired degree choice. Economics serves as an introduction to the fundamental role of economic theory in
governing the choices of society. Mathematics allows me to explore the techniques of data analysis and
develop an abstract mode of thought, as has Kumon Mathematics. Chemistry and AS Physics have helped
broaden my depth of logical awareness. It is my interest in logic that initiated me to take AS Critical Thinking,
working mainly independently due to timetable conflicts, and I am currently enjoying studying argument
structures and types.
Outside of academia, I have a great passion for the arts; a love of literature and poetry: my collection is
published online (www.naz.b3.nu) and a selection have been internationally published in the 'Letters From The
Soul' anthology and 'The Sound of Poetry' audio CD. I am also a performing and administrative member of
Navrang Arts, a nationally renowned Indian Folk Dance troupe, as well as of Egglescliffe Youth Theatre. Sport
is equally important to me: I have played at the club and tournament level in tennis and additionally at county
level in badminton. Currently, I am looking forward to gaining a coaching qualification in badminton as well as
running the Great North Run next year having run the Junior Great North Run in the past years.
Active participation in school life has been rewarding, having been Chairman of the School Council, an Editor
of a collaborative publication with other partner schools in Europe, worked as a Peer Mentor for Y9 pupils and
managed HSBC Schoolbranch. Additonally, I have been managing director of a Young Enterprise company,
have represented the school at the RSC Analytical Chemistry Competition, and have been regional semifinalist
at the Student Innovation Challenge.
I have high ambitions, and in the future I hope to be successfully involved in economic policy at a high level. In
the coming summer, I would like to gain experience in the professional world, perhaps with an internship at a
well renowned firm, preferably in management consultancy or investment banking at Accenture or PWC.

Engineering (civil) personal statement

Modern life is almost wholly dependent on engineering. It is everywhere and it is always changing, and it is this
in particular which attracts me to civil engineering. I hope that in this field I can combine my knowledge and
skills in physics and maths, two subjects which particularly interest me, and also work in an area which is both
diverse and exciting. I am attracted to the prospect of a job which enables me to shape the world around me
for the future and make a difference to peoples lives. Whilst I anticipate a challenging and demanding career, I
also expect it to be very rewarding, especially when I can see projects I have worked on being built from start
to completion.
I first encountered civil engineering during work experience with a local firm in October 2003. Whilst there, I
was inspired by the opportunity to apply my existing skills to real-life problems, and as a result decided to
participate in the Engineering Education Scheme. As part of a team of five, I worked closely with qualified
engineers on a railway embankment stabilisation project, and relished the chance to become fully involved in
an actual engineering problem from start to finish. I experienced project management and report writing and
gained invaluable team-working, time-management and presentation skills, producing a report which was
commended by a number of senior engineers. Following this I attended a Headstart course at Heriot Watt
University, and also visited Fairfield Mabey, where I saw ongoing work on various bridges, both in the design
office and on site. During the summer I was interviewed by Costain and subsequently offered a Building
Awareness Sixth Form Scholarship for my academic achievements and keen interest in civil engineering.
In March 2004 I was one of thirty students selected to participate in a five-day maths and physics event at
Oxford University, and this Easter I also attended a maths course at Leeds University. At both of these I
enjoyed developing my problem-solving ability and adapting my knowledge to new and challenging situations
beyond the scope of my schoolwork. At Leeds I found I was not attracted to the more theoretical approach of
studying maths and preferred problems relating to real-life situations, particularly a lecture on the instability of
Londons Millennium Bridge, and I hope that this is something I can continue to enjoy throughout my
engineering career.
I am currently working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, in which I particularly enjoy the challenge
of planning and undertaking the expeditions, and the sense of achievement afterwards. As part of the award I
have set-up and run my schools first sixth form netball team, further utilising my team-working and
organisational skills. I am working towards the European Computer Driving Licence in order to extend my IT
skills, and I am also a Young Leader at a local Guide Unit, where I enjoy working with the girls and motivating
them to acquire new skills. Last October I was one of twenty Guides and Scouts who participated in the 12th
International Space Olympics in Moscow, achieving one of the highest non-Russian scores in the competitions
history. This involved exams and a group presentation, and through research and preparation for these I was
able to extend my knowledge of maths and physics into new, more advanced areas.
Through my experiences I am already beginning to appreciate the diversity which civil engineering will offer,
and I hope to build on this by securing a work placement next summer as well as sponsorship for my degree. I
have enjoyed my time at school and now look forward to the challenge of university and to a varied and
exciting career in civil engineering.

English personal statement

I have always been fascinated by the way writers can influence, and even manipulate readers emotions by
their expression of thoughts, and by their ability to encourage the expansion of our imaginations and
understanding. My favourite authors include Phillip Pullman, Caroline B. Cooney and also Ian McEwan, whose
novels are inspiring because of their enviable lucidity and innovative character development. It is my love of
literature that has stimulated me to write creatively for pleasure. I therefore want to study English further as a
catalyst for my own writing and to extend my knowledge of a subject for which I have developed a passion.
My love of drama inspired me from a young age to take part in school productions by competing with over a
hundred girls in auditions and successfully securing parts. I performed in the production of Othello at the
Greenwich theatre two years ago, which was not only a privilege but also an exhilarating experience in
communicating my interpretation to a large audience.
I am enthusiastic about all my studies and have therefore decided to continue with four A Levels. My subjects
have enabled me to enhance and develop many skills. English Literature has furthered my knowledge of the
stylistic devices employed by a variety of writers. In addition I have developed the skill of arguing cogently and
effectively through my own writing. Biology and Psychology have primarily helped me to acquire the skill of
interpreting and learning complex factual information. Both subjects have developed my understanding of
ethical and contemporary issues, and have thus complemented my study of English.
My study of History has allowed me to pursue my passion for investigating the past by retracing the steps that
have led to our present circumstances. The subject offers me opportunities in abundance to formulate my own
explanations, whilst emphasising the importance of open-mindedness in appraising the perspectives of other
historians. I pursued my interest in history this summer by applying to the UCL/British Library summer school
of Revolutions, and was selected, together with thirty-five other sixth formers across the UK. There I was given
the inspiring opportunity to attend lectures given by recognised experts who were at the cutting edge of their
field of study. Furthermore I was given the rare opportunity of handling primary material, which I found
overwhelming given that many of the documents I studied were over four hundred years old.
I play an active part in my school and have consequently been involved in many extra-curricular activities. I
was appointed a prefect, and discharged my responsibilities with sensitivity. I am currently on the schools sixth
form committee. My role here is developing my confidence, leadership skills and capacity to work cooperatively as part of a team. By participating in a debate as part of the University Access Programme I have
become more articulate in expressing my views. I have mentored a younger student, an experience that
proved to be particularly rewarding when she acquired greater confidence in her reading. In addition I am a
Millennium Volunteer and look forward to the prospect of teaching IT to a variety of people with physical or
learning disabilities in my vacation period. I am a conscientious, sensitive and committed student and am
confident that I have the qualities and skills to succeed at university. I look forward to the challenge of a
demanding degree course, and to the opportunity to play a significant role in university life.

History Personal Statement

History links us to the consequences of life in worlds gone by. Childhood visits to the inspiring Hadrian's Wall
and Stonehenge fuelled my curiosity in the subject as I wanted to explore and absorb these worlds. I still have
that enthusiasm and now recognise how past times have had a profound impact not just on my childhood
interest and enjoyment but also the world today. My voluntary post in a Salisbury museum has enabled me to
discover how the past is brought to the public and I have enjoyed meeting people with a background in history.
This and the motivation I gained from GCSE and AS History have confirmed to me that I want to take my
studies to degree level.
AS History led me to Amsterdam's Anne Frank Museum and Dutch Resistance Museum, showing me the
broader impact of World War Two not in the taught syllabus. To complement my studies I also took part in a
school trip to Berlin. Here I was able to hear a first hand account of the true terror of crossing the border from
Eastern to Western Europe, revealing to me that history isn't just found in text or by unearthing artefacts but
also through the lives of others. I am eager to study Soviet Russia at A2 after reading Service's biography of
Stalin. This book opened my eyes to the dramatic changes the Soviet Union went through in political and
social terms with policies of collectivisation and the Purges.
I feel my A level subjects have allowed me to do what I most enjoy - researching and analysing sources from
the past while developing my own ideas. English has allowed me to experience writers such as Owen,
Sassoon and Sherrif who further broadened my thinking showing me differing and very personal views of life
within WWI. Studying Politics has shown me the breadth of implications of history, particularly in studies into
Northern Ireland.
Since joining 6th form after moving to Salisbury I have been determined to become an integral part of the
school community. I have achieved this, becoming a Prefect and Form Captain in Year 12 where I integrated
with other years as well as my own, and developed leadership and organisational skills. I am now a Senior
Mentor for Year 12, which is very rewarding as I offer emotional and academic support to students. Previous
positions of responsibility include being a librarian. In terms of sport I was on the school tennis team which
improved my fitness and taught me teamwork and communication.
I am currently working towards Grade 8 flute. Music lessons have encouraged me to persevere to achieve
excellence. I became leader of the flute section of Skipton Music Centre's Wind Band, and, after moving,
joined the Senior Wind Band of Salisbury Area Young Musicians. These groups have improved my ability to
listen to others and gain confidence through performing to unfamiliar audiences in a variety of locations.
I have varied paid and voluntary work experience which has developed my responsibilities and taught me how
to interact with customers and work as a team with other employees. The balance of work and study has
developed my time management skills, something I feel is crucial to a history degree.
I am looking forward to studying history at university because this will allow me to think critically and broadly. I
believe university will allow me to meet many people from a wide variety of backgrounds, and that the
experience will provide me with excellent transferable skills for the career path I choose to follow.

French and Italian Personal Statement

Before I participated in a French Exchange to Montelimar in 2005, I had found French interesting but didn't
particularly think that it would be important in my longer term career aims. However, whilst in Montelimar, I
found myself fully immersed in French culture and began to realise the breadth and beauty of the language
and the importance of being able to express myself effectively in another language. This led me to exploring
other European Languages to add to my knowledge. My sixth form college offered GCSE Italian and it seemed
like the perfect opportunity to learn another language. I love the country and have visited there many times
with my family. To further my knowledge and understanding of the language and culture, I jumped at the
chance to gain work experience in the French Speaking area of Liege, Belgium. I found this an enjoyable and
rewarding challenge particularly when it came to teaching younger students English as it gave me an insight
into how others learn our language as well as helping me with my studies. This helped my decision to continue
my language studies at university.
I have particularly enjoyed the immigration aspects of the French A2 course and the environmental section of
the GCSE Italian course. I am also studying A2 Geography, which has allowed me to gain knowledge of the
world. I would like to experience many different cultures and languages allowing me to improve my language
skills. I am looking forward to a trip to China as this will allow me to experience the culture and language of a
non-European country. I am studying A2 Maths which means I have to be organised, keep up to date with work
and meet deadlines. AS Geology means that my work has become more detailed, as in field sketches which
require as much detail as possible.
Outside of college, I participate in the Scunthorpe Co-Op Choir and I have been involved for 9 years now. This
shows I am dedicated, committed and reliable for concerts, rehearsals and tours. It has taught me how to work
as part of a team and cooperate fully to its success. The choir have also visited Paris, Australia (singing at the
torch ceremony at the Olympics) and Wales and entered several prestigious competitions. In preparation for
Paris, I taught the choir how to pronounce the words in Dome Epais. I am a young leader for Brownies and this
has taught me how to be a leader. I am very committed to this as I have been part of Girl Guiding since I was
5. I like seeing the Brownies enjoying the activities and I am currently training to become an adult leader. I play
for the college Netball Team so I work as part of different teams but also individually and I was captain of the
rounders team at school so I had to be organised enough to distribute action plans. I was a prefect at school
and a student ambassador for college. I have participated in college open days and evenings as a reference
point for prospective students and feel I am a reliable student. I also play the clarinet to Grade 3.
As a part-time job, I work at Argos where I feel I am a trustworthy team member yet I can still work under my
own initiative to do things before being requested to do so. I enjoy meeting the staff there and I get to meet a
wide range of people from all backgrounds which has improved my communication skills. During the summer, I
worked at a school where I created systems to organise the uniform orders and SEN files. I also helped as a
French Assistant within some of the GCSE French lessons.
These activities have made me a self-motivated person with a wide variety of interests and I am eager to begin
my degree course.

Law personal statement

My interest in Law stems from a fascination with resolving conflict and the important contribution it makes to
our society. I view Law as a career in which I will have the opportunity to improve the lives of others and be
able to evaluate the nature of human relationships. I believe that I am suited to a career in law as I work best
when facing challenges.
Academically, I have always been a very determined individual, hence the reason I knew that a degree at
University would be the next step. I have a broad interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a law
degree. The wide range of subjects that I have chosen has helped me to become more open minded. In fourth
year I sat GCSE Arabic out with the school. This made me realise the importance of organisation and required
me to make use of my time efficiently so that other schoolwork did not suffer. Therefore I decided to further
extend my academic achievements by preparing for the Arabic A level exam. My ability to speak Arabic fluently
and also read and write it has largely improved my communication skills and the way I interact with others. I
am also studying an additional Higher which I feel has become less challenging because of my efficiency in
organisation and also my determination which drives me closer to my ambition of becoming a successful
lawyer. My choice in social sciences such as Geography and Modern Studies has also taught me how to adopt
a more logical approach to factual situations and other competences such as improving my knowledge of
modern society and international political affairs that trouble the modern world.
To complement my academic interests I engage in a variety of extracurricular activities. I am involved in the
school debating society. The experience has taught me to use my own initiative in writing speeches and
developed my skills of public speaking and diplomacy. I am also involved in the production of the school
newspaper as I enjoy writing articles about major issues in society such as international social issues. One of
my main hobbies is organising events within my Muslim cultural community as I enjoy the responsibility as well
as working alongside friends. My ability to motivate myself is a key factor in my overall success. I am an
extremely hardworking person and I am committed to reaching my goals.
I thoroughly enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends who are the most important feature of
my life. I am also keen on taking part in a variety of sporting activities as I often organise a five a side football
team to participate in tournaments at the weekends. This experience has taught me the importance of
communication, teamwork and self-reliance. I am also a member of the local gym were I attend regularly in
order to keep active and fit. Moreover, I frequently enjoy reading novels as well as broad sheet newspapers to
keep myself updated with world events.
My work experience with Miller Samual law firm in Glasgow fired and reinforced my enthusiasm for a career in
Law. I had the opportunity to shadow administrators, solicitors and office clerks, observing critical procedures
at every level. Moreover, I feel that it is necessary to further extend my experiences within a Lawyer's
workplace; therefore I have decided to attend another week of work experience in January 2007. This will
allow me to reinforce my grasp of what day to day life and work and is like for a lawyer and will improve my
awareness of what a career in law will involve.
As a result of my education and experiences I feel that I have developed the skills necessary to meet the
challenge that further education will provide me with and challenges that I look forward to meeting and
accomplishing.

Government/Politics Personal Statement

I have realised how powerful the influence of Government and Politics is across the world, and as a subject it
has captured my attention. I have learnt that there are very few places that are untouched by political power.
Through witnessing events such as September 11th, I have come to believe that politics is far too significant to
overlook.
One aspect of politics that intrigues me is international relations, because of its global implications. I am
particularly fascinated by the relationships that exist between governments, for example the position that the
USA adopts on foreign policy. I am interested in the role of the UN as a global authority, the process of conflict
resolution and the alliances that governments form to take international measures. My own political ideology is
based on the notion that the world can be made stronger through international co-operation, and that our main
concern should not be with domestic interests but international ones.
I enjoy absorbing a wide variety of political opinions, and I follow current affairs in the UK and internationally
with great interest. I am enthusiastic to extend my political understanding; I find reading the works of Anthony
Giddens provides a strong indicator of the ideological future of politics. I also enjoy novels by Robert Harris,
whose combination of political fact and fiction produces a gripping plot and an insight into the reactions of
everyday individuals to their political surroundings.
By taking part in work experience at the Labour Party HQ of Ben Bradshaw MP I was able to see how politics
functions in practice, and experience all the daily operations that take place inside a political centre. This
included meeting many of the constituents as well as reading through some of the MP's cases that dealt with
topical issues such as asylum and discontent with the current government.
Last year I participated in Young Enterprise as the Finance Director and Company Secretary of @Last; we
surpassed 4000 other companies to reach the Young Enterprise National Final. Managing the finances of the
company was a valuable experience, learning how money should be dealt with carefully and allocated
precisely where it is needed. I learnt how to present a product in the professional world by partaking in many
crucial meetings with major South West businesses, 28 of whom we convinced to invest 8,600 into our
project through advertising. I look forward to using the communication skills I have gained to help present my
arguments at university in an effective and confident manner. I am continuing to learn new skills in the
business world, as a few team members and I have now have taken on running the company ourselves, as a
private business enterprise.
Through studying politics I want to continue to learn in a friendly environment, contributing to university life in
every way that I can; engaging myself in debate, discussion and an active social life.

Journalism personal statement

The media's the most powerful entity on earth. An interesting quote from Malcolm X, who also claimed,
Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world. I wish to combine these two passions and follow
my ambition to become a journalist by continuing my studies into Higher Education. It is well known that power
attracts and I, like many others, have become enchanted by the power of the written and spoken word. This
fascination has created a deep interest in writing, and Journalism provides the perfect outlet to develop my
skills.
Ive heard enough about the media industry to realise that experience is everything, and as Sixth Form
Reporter on the College committee, I gain regular experience of journalistic writing and meeting deadlines. I
have written for the official college Network, which is sent home to parents, and the Student Newspaper.
When selecting my A Level subjects, I seemed drawn to essay based courses. I enjoy writing and the courses
undoubtedly helped my writing skills. However, I was required to make the opening of a film in Media, which
was an experience to say the least! It increased my interest in Broadcast Journalism. Until that moment, I only
had eyes for Print. Creative writing has always been one of my favourite aspects of English, and the
coursework gave me the chance to write in whichever style I chose, one piece was a newspaper feature on
Chelsea Football Club. I have always been interested in Sports Writing and Im considering specialising in it at
a later date. I have chosen to continue four of my five AS Levels onto A2, even though it was not necessary. I
have always found Psychology quite challenging as it involves deep levels of critical analysis, so I decided to
carry on as I find it extremely intriguing. The different theories as to why humans do the things they do, attract
me because I am interested in how people act, though one could hardly call me an anthropologist! My main
priorities are English, Media and Sociology as I feel they will aid me most in my ambition, although I still find
Psychology a fascinating subject.
I have often said that nothing is impossible, yet asking me to name my favourite book is asking too much.
Some much-loved literature includes The Hobbit, Gone With The Wind, and Jane Eyre. In my opinion a good
novel should evoke a variety of emotions from beginning to end. Music may not be my first love, but it is
definitely one of my passions; I have high passes in grade 3 flute, singing, and grade 5 piano. Like my literary
tastes, my choice of music is eclectic; I like anything from hip-hop to classical, soul to rock, and past to
present. I also love Black history, musicals, and icons of film and music, such as Audrey Hepburn, John
Lennon, and Sinatra. Lennon once said, We all want to change the world, I empathise with this view and seek
to achieve it using my chosen profession and the power of the media.

Nursing Personal Statement

Nursing is a very challenging and demanding career, however I feel the rewards would be great
and that I am ready to embark on this career. I am eager to pursue a career in which I am able
to help and care for people, becoming a nurse would allow me to fulfil this ambition. Nursing
is a career for dedicated, reliable, trusting people who are able to develop relationships
with patients quickly. I have these skills and I genuinely want to make a difference to
people, to assist them and their families through difficult times when they are at their most
vulnerable. The role of nursing is changing as nurses are far more involved in the welfare of
patients and this is placing more responsibility on nurses. I am confident of embracing this
challenge and to take advantage of these changes and opportunities and use them to further my
career.
At school I am involved in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and have completed bronze and silver
levels. Aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh involved working as part of a group, this has helped
me become an effective team player which I believe will be useful in the nursing environment
as it will be necessary to use this strength to communicate successfully with other health
professionals to determine what level of care is best for a patient. I am also involved in the
music department as part of two choirs and a guitar group. I perform learning support once a
week with a girl with additional support needs. This involves undertaking activities with her
and supporting her to communicate difficulties when she is finding things challenging. This is
very rewarding as I can see what a difference it makes for her to have someone who is willing
to listen, and has made me realise how important this skill is when caring for people. Another
activity I find rewarding is performing in-class support with a second year science class.
I am a young leader at Aberlady Rainbows and Guides and this is very valuable to me as I
interact with the girls and participate in activities with them. It has greatly increased my
confidence as I often have to talk to the girls in a group setting and this has developed my
interpersonal skills. I am also involved in the peer education scheme '4' which involves going
to different Guiding units and raising awareness of issues through activities and games. This
has been incredibly beneficial for my confidence and my planning and organisational skills.
These skills have been developed as I have to co-ordinate the sessions as well as talking to a
group of people that I am not familiar with. As one of only two in4mers in East Lothian this
role is very demanding.
I have been employed as a waitress for three years in the local hotel. This has been excellent
for my interpersonal skills as it involves talking to people I am not familiar with. A skill
that will be transferable to nursing. I have also undertaken work experience, through school,
at Harlawhill Day Care Centre. This gave me a useful insight into the caring profession and
has increased my motivation to work within it. I organised my own work experience at the
Edington Cottage Hospital and this gave me an idea of what working in a hospital setting will
be like. Both experiences served to fuel my desire to gain entry to the nursing profession. I
also plan to work as a nursing auxiliary through the nurse bank next summer.
In the future I may wish to pursue a career in Paediatric nursing and I feel that an adult
nursing degree will be the first step in giving me this opportunity. I am deeply passionate
about nursing and I am already looking forward to a long and fulfilling career in this field.
I am the first person in my family to pursue further education.

Primary Education Personal Statement

I am a hard-working, responsible, friendly girl with a strong passion to pursue a career in primary school
teaching. I believe that to become an excellent teacher you must have a desire to assist children in the
learning process and this is one quality which I feel I definitely possess.
My initial interest in primary teaching sparked while volunteering in a summer play scheme run by a local
charity for children aged 0-8 in the summer holidays of 2009. I found it extremely rewarding to see the look of
satisfaction on a childs face as they completed a piece of artwork, or took part in a group activity knowing that
I helped give the children the confidence and ability to do so. Working closely with both the children and the
parents greatly improved my confidence, and by the end of the play scheme I found myself singing along to
the songs and joining in with the games with as much enthusiasm as the youngsters.
Through my local primary school I have been able to shadow a teacher of a mixed class of year one and year
two pupils for two days. I was able to help the children with reading one-on-one, which I really enjoyed. I was
patient and understanding while listening to the children read, and helped them with words they found difficult.
I also took part in a maths lesson where the children were weighing different classroom objects. I enjoyed
having the responsibility of supervising the children while learning, and interacting with different children. I had
the responsibility of a group of children at playtime, in which I was required to keep the children entertained
and maintain discipline. This experience gave me an insight into the running of a classroom, and reinforced my
desire to teach.
In July 2008 I completed a weeks work experience at a pharmacy. I was punctual and professional throughout
the week, and was given the responsibility of sorting medications and dispensing prescriptions. I was polite
and communicated well while serving customers, and enjoyed working with the other members of staff.
At school I participated in many experiences which I felt was beneficial to me in many ways. I was a member
of the Anti-Bullying Campaign (ABC), which involved communication and mediation with younger pupils who
had been upset by the actions of other students. The ABC required me to be sympathetic, understanding,
patient and considerate with the children. I also took part in Crucial Crew while at school, I worked as part of a
team to explain the impacts of cyber bullying to groups of primary children. I also took part in health and safety
demonstrations and food safety workshops as part of this experience. During both Crucial Crew and the ABC I
confidently made many presentations explaining the projects in a way which primary aged children could
understand and were interested in. I created many power-points and posters using a computer, and helped
organise short role-plays to demonstrate. I believe that these experiences allowed me to obtain skills which
would be helpful to me in a teaching role.
Ive been a member of many sports teams from a young age both for school teams and outside of the school. I
achieved many badges as a swimmer and a gymnast, attended trampolining classes, was a member of Neath
Harriers athletic club and I was a member of the school netball team throughout my school life. I am interested
in taking part in a coaching course, which would make it possible for me to be able to run a school sports team
in the future.
I am a creative person; I enjoy reading books, making jewellery, and baking at home in my spare time. My
school art teacher often complimented my artistic talent during my time at secondary school, and I was
delighted to achieve an A* at GCSE for my hard work. I am also a computer-literate person. I enjoyed GCSE
ICT, achieving an A*and my schools Award for Outstanding Attainment in ICT. I have carried the subject on to
A level, accomplishing an A grade at AS level. I have often helped my two younger cousins who are both
primary aged to use the computer, teaching them how to word process documents and how to surf the
internet. I love helping them learn new things, and have played a role in their understanding of numbers,
letters, colours, reading and writing.
It would give me great pleasure to play a memorable role in the growth of many children. I understand that
teaching is a taxing and tiring job, but I am more than willing to do whatever it takes to reach my goal of
becoming a head teacher. I would be thrilled if I was ever able to achieve this, as I believe I have the
personality, confidence, organisational skills and ability to become a resourceful, dedicated, appreciated head
teacher.

Psychology personal statement

Studying Psychology I hope to be the beginnings of a challenging and rewarding career. I look forward to
working with and helping others in all ranges of psychological instances. A great achievement would be to
work within psychological study. I have a passion and thirst for knowledge, I am naturally drawn to this subject
which holds great depth and opportunity for never ending investigation. I have a love for art and became
aware of an incredible artist named Stephen Wiltshire. His drawings, of complex cityscapes and the like, hold
a remarkable amount of realistic detail. What makes Stephen Wilshire's artwork so unique however is that he
an Artistic Autistic Savant. The idea of Savantism fascinates me and instills much curiosity in the possibilities of
the human mind, as do a variety of other psychological phenomenon. I look forward to feeding this curiosity
and discovering more about all aspects of psychology.
Having not formally studied Psychology, I feel I have gained many applicable skills and have had a variety of
experiences in study, work and day to day life that will stand me in good stead for studying psychology at
University. From my college studies in Media, I gained invaluable skills in research and essay compilation,
working to both structured and open brief types successfully. Here, I developed a good work ethic,
understanding the importance of structure and planning in producing good results. I have learned how crucial
working to deadlines can be and discovered how working in this way really inspires me and drives me forward.
Studying Media encouraged me to develop an analytical way of thinking and evaluative skills which will be
transferable to my future study. Also important is that I have an open minded outlook on learning that will
surely be highly advantageous in this subject area.
From a young age I have traveled to the Far East to visit family living in Indonesia. This part of my life has had
an enormous impact on who I am and has allowed me to see great things. I have been introduced to a
completely different culture and experienced an alternative way of life that has allowed me to become aware of
how big the world is, and how cultural differences have such an impact on individuals, particularly aspects
such as lifestyle, religion and education. I have come to appreciate the many differences in human beings, and
how these differences are influenced greatly by our environment.
Having attended University briefly before, and for various reasons deciding to withdraw, I feel now more
conclusive about my direction and better mentally prepared for higher education. I have come to realise how
keen to learn I am and how I thrive in a situation where I am expanding my knowledge. In the year since
deciding to discontinue my previous course, challenges have arising in life that have encouraged me to grow
and strengthen. I have also had time to really consider my options and desires for the future. I have great
confidence in my ability to achieve a degree level qualification and believe the maturity I have gained since my
first attempt will only give me a more solid foundation for producing what I am best capable of.
At this moment in time my knowledge of psychology is amateur, however expanding and I spend much of my
free time trying to develop this knowledge by reading, researching and observing others. By often discussing
things such as feelings and theories with friends, family and colleagues I feel I am constantly learning more
and more about psychology and beginning to develop both my own ideas and questions. I hope to continue
my study further after gaining a degree but alternatively, I have also considered the application of psychology
in the Media and Marketing world, and how a psychology degree could greatly influence, contribute and
provide insight for many careers. This degree will hopefully be the opening to many great opportunities.

Illustration and art personal statement

I have always enjoyed Art from an early age. My earliest memory of this is doodling on sheets of computer paper and
cutting up old Christmas cards to make new images. I can remember spending most of my childhood just drawing and
being inspired to make and design anything and everything! This love of Art has stayed with me and developed and
grown and, now, I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else.
I have always wanted to work within the Art and Design industry because it has always felt like the right direction for me to
take. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to go to an Art school and I now feel really lucky to have the
opportunity to do so: I am feeling very excited about my future!
I enjoy being creative and I view Art as a natural way for me to express myself. I particularly enjoy drawing and how this
allows me to create images in a way that I see them. I enjoy working in a figurative and detailed way and I aim to make
my work expressive and visually interesting through tone and mark-making. I feel, from my progression from G.C.S.E
through A Levels to A.V.C.E, I am beginning to develop my own style and way of working. I particularly enjoy portraiture
work and using animals as subject matter.
Whilst at Crosshall High School, I achieved seven G.C.S.Es, gaining a grade A in Art. I have since gone on to achieve
three A levels and two A/s Levels at Runshaw college. I have completed an A Level in Fine Art, whilst there, and I enjoyed
this extremely. I found this course very challenging but rewarding as I had grown in my understanding of the discipline
and I gained a grade B. I am currently completing an A.V.C.E Art and Design course. This two-year course has been very
beneficial to me as I feel I have developed my skills within Art and have gained an understanding of the various
disciplines within Art and Design. This course has led me to my decision to specialise within Illustration. I enjoy creating
images in response to a piece of writing or a particular theme. I like the creative freedom this allows and the vast potential
for work.
My interests include reading and some of my favourite novels include To Kill A Mockingbird and Mary Shelleys
Frankenstein. My favourite novel has to be Animal Farm because it is so well written and has great impact. I have recently
carried out an illustration brief based on this novel and this was very exciting for me and, I feel, a turning point in my work.
I enjoy visiting Art Galleries and exhibitions. I am particularly interested in figurative portraiture and Illustration-based
exhibitions. I have recently visited an exhibition about drawing styles at my local Art Gallery. I found this very interesting
as there were varied styles and approaches to drawing( I especially liked Posy Simmons use of storyboards). A few
months ago I visited an exhibition for childrens illustrator Shirley Hughes at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. This had a
great impact on me and was one of the factors that has led to me pursuing a career in Illustration. I love the way she
combines her use of image against text and the way she uses media expressively. At this stage, I am interested in
childrens book illustration as there are so many quality, contemporary illustrations at the moment that I find inspiring. I see
illustrations for childrens books as something worthwhile and or importance. They can capture a childs imagination and
inspire and motivate them to learn to read.
I have worked for the past three years at a bakery as a part-time counter assistant. This involves such duties as dealing
with customers, dealing with money and organising displays. I have really enjoyed this job as we are a fairly busy shop
and so I meet a lot of different people and I find this very rewarding. Prior to this, I have worked voluntarily at a local vets
practise. I found this very interesting because I like animals and this was a chance for me to learn more about them. I
have also been involved in an activity group for disabled children . This experience was invaluable to me as I met such
interesting and amazing people. The group activities included Art and Crafts and this taught me how Art can be
therapeutic and< basically, just a worthwhile form of expression.
