MONSOON WATCH
· Southwest Monsoon has further advance the over some more parts of southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, some
parts of eastcentral Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea. The Northern
limit of monsoon (NLM) passes through Lat.5.0°N/ 80.0°E, Lat.8.0°N/ 83.0°E, Lat. 10.0°N/Long. 85.0°E, Lat. 14.0° N/
Long. 90.0°E and Lat. 17.0° N/ Long. 95.0° E .
· Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest Bay of
Bengal, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, some parts of westcentral and some more parts of eastcentral
Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours.
MAIN WEATHER OBSERVATIONS
(Recorded during past 24 hours)
· Heat wave conditions are prevailing over some parts of Haryana & Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and Telengana.
· Yesterday, the highest Maximum temperature of 47.6°C was recorded at Palam Airport (Delhi).
Synoptic features (based on 0830 hrs IST)
· The Cyclonic Storm ‘LAILA’ over southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved west northwestwards and

lay centered at 0830 hrs. IST of today, the 18 May, 2010 over southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal
near latitude 12.0°N and 85.5°E, about 570 Km east-southeast of Chennai, 690 Km southeast of Visakhapatnam and
1250 Km south-southwest of Kolkata..
· The western disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining north Pakistan with an induced upper air cyclonic
circulation over northwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood.
Numerical Weather prediction( NWP) Guidance
· The cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly to northerly direction during next 72 hours
towards Andhra Pradesh coast closed to Machlipattinam.
Satellite Observations:
· KALPANA–1 Cloud imagery at 0830 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of Jammu & Kashmir and south &
central Bay of Bengal. Low/medium clouds are seen over parts of rest western Himalayan Region, northeast, east,
south peninsular India and southeast Arabian sea.

Major features of weather forecast (upto 0830 hours IST of 21 May, 2010)
· Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over north Tamilnadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh during next
48 hours.
· Widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
· Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over northeastern states.
· Fairly widespread rain/thundershowers would occur over Jammu & Kashmir, scattered over Himachal Pradesh and
isolated over Uttrakhand during next 1-2 days.
· Isolated duststorm/thunderstorms would occur over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi & Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and
Rajasthan during next 24 hours..
· Scattered rain/thundershowers may occur over West Bengal & Sikkim and isolated over Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa
and Chhattisgarh. Rainfall activity would increase over Orissa and Gengetic west Bengal after 48 hours.

· Maximum temperature may fall by 2-4 C over northwest, central, east, and peninsular India during next 48 hours.

Warning
· Isolated heavy to very heavy fall would occur over north Tamilnadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 48
hours.
· Gale force wind with speed reaching 65-75 kmph likely to commence along and off Andhra coast from today, the 18th
night. It may increase subsequently as the system moves closer to coast. Squally winds speed reaching 50-60 kmph
likely along and off north Tamilnadu coast from today night.
· Sea condition will be high to very high along and off Andhra Pradesh coast and very rough along and off north
Tamilnadu coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea off these coasts.
· Thundersqualls would occur at some places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab,
Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa West Bengal & Sikkim, northeastern states,
during next 48 hours

· Increase in rainfall activity over south peninsular India and northeastern states.
