XP-DSM Field Installation Instructions for XM2 Power Supply

Pre-installation Assumptions:
These instructions assume the following:
• Connection to an XM2 power supply running firmware version 3.0 or higher
• Network using DOCSIS version 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0. See XP-DSM Network Provisioning Instructions information on
configuring the network
• A single IP mode configuration
• Completed network configuration, including assigning an IP address
Detailed instructions for both network and field personnel are available in the XP-DSM Installation and Operation Manual
(Alpha P/N 704-818-B0) available at www.alpha.com. The XP-DSM can also be configured to register a second IP
address on your customer network, allowing technicians access to the power supply from anywhere.
Before Installation:
• Verify that the device address is either 1, 2, or 3. The power supply's device address
cannot be set to zero and every power supply monitored by a single XP-DSM must have
a unique address. See instructions for checking the device address in the installation
and operation manual.
Verify Device Address
• Record the RF MAC address, located on the XP-DSM. This address indicates the type
of cable modem used with the XP-DSM and is needed for network provisioning.

Basic Steps:
1. Installing the XP-DSM in the power supply
2. Installing the battery sense cable
3. Connecting the RF drop
4. Make remaining front panel connections (tamper, serial port connections)
5. Start up and test the system RF MAC
Address

WARNING!

To reduce the risk of electric shock, remove the inverter module from the power supply prior to
installation. For units in service, backup battery power will not be available during this procedure.

Installing the XP-DSM Disconnect
1. Turn off the XM2 battery breaker and disconnect all inverter
module connections.
2. Loosen the inverter module thumb screws and slide the
inverter module out of the power supply just far enough to
disconnect the ribbon cable. Disconnect the ribbon cable and
remove the inverter module (Fig. 1). If the inverter module
is equipped with a communication module, remove it by
loosening the two Phillips captive screws (Fig. 2).
3. Insert the long side of the 18-pin jumper into the side of the
inverter module (Fig. 3).
Fig. 1
4. On the XP-DSM, find and record the RF MAC address. This
address is needed for network configuration. If you want to
set the unit to dual IP mode, see the instructions in the XP-
DSM Installation and Operation Manual, available at www.
alpha.com.
5. Line up the 18-pin jumper with the XP-DSM connector and
connect the unit to the inverter module (Fig. 4). Captive
6. Tighten the two captive screws to secure the XP-DSM. screws
7. Re-install the inverter module, reconnect the ribbon cable,
and make other front panel connections.

Initial Start-up
1. Plug the power supply into the AC outlet and turn on the battery breaker.
2. The XP-DSM LEDs blink three times and the RDY light begins blinking on and off.
3. Verify no alarms are active.
4. Verify LNK LED is blinking (not on solid).
5. Verify the DS and REG LEDs are on solid (this verifies successful network registration). A solid Registration LED
indicates registration with the CMTS. Use this indicator to confirm the communication with the headend.
