Tynemouth’s good early start not maintained at the Riverside

Tynemouth’s First XI travelled to the Riverside to play Durham Academy. Tynemouth batted
first and made a superb start to the day. Openers Dan Newton and Iain Purdy played well
against the attack of M Claydon and C Harding who were seen off. However, both batsmen fell
for 39 to the change bowling of J Kileen and R Pringle. Scott Borthwick, Tynemouth’s Durham
player enjoyed scoring 16 runs at his first home and Dan Young added another 13. Skipper
Andrew Smith was Kileen’s third victim (for 30) bowled for 5. Pringle got to grips with the
Tynemouth order and accounted for half of the wickets for 35 runs with Greg Hollins 5, Ben
Debnam 7, Tony Turner 7 and Shahid Nazir a useful 26 all caught out. Phil Morse scored 5 and
Jamie Coates 6 not out in Tynemouth’s total of 199. Harding took 3 catches and bowled 2-47.
The Academy started their innings even better than Tynemouth’s with Raine 50 and Coyne 59
contributing well to a first wicket century stand. Borthwick then had a hand in both their
dismissals with Turner catching Raine and Borthwick catching Coyne for Nazir. Borthwick
bowled Singh (12) and trapped Wood who scored 25. However, Durham cruised to victory by
six wickets thanks to that man Pringle who was undefeated on 38. Borthwick claimed 3-73 and
Nazir 1-57; Tynemouth hope this pairing can establish themselves over the next few fixtures to
lift them up the table. Smith 0-27 and Morse 0-34 completed the Tynemouth bowling.
There was no Second Team fixture this week because Durham Academy have only one team.
However, the First Team were in action again on Sunday, hosting Benwell Hill in the National
Cup. The Hill batted first and were restricted to 146-8 off 32 overs in a rain reduced tie, mainly
thanks to a tight spell of bowling from David Hymers with only 12 runs coming off his 7 overs.
Dan Young claimed three wickets. Tynemouth had a good chance of bettering this total but fell
only 14 runs short. Ben Debnam and Tony Turner each broke the 30 barrier but wickets fell
steadily and with two overs to go last man Russell Perry was called to the crease. He hit a
massive six over deep mid off but was then caught behind off a top edge, attempting a repeat,
and this brought the proceedings to a close in the 31st over.
Northumberland Cricket Board Coaches Association are to run a coach
induction session at Walbottle Campus on Wednesday 15th June from 6pm - 9pm. The
idea of this evening is to prepare candidates who wish to gain level I or Level II qualifications
over the winter. Information regarding the evening can be obtained from Daniel Shurben
North Tyneside Community Coach, Tel: 07894 268 900 or
northtynesidecricket@yahoo.co.uk. Applications must be in by 26th May.
In the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League, Tynemouth Thirds made their
second trip of the season to play GEM at Wardley. Skipper Paul Coates won the first toss of his
life and elected to bat. He opened with Tim Whiting who started well. The pair posted 27 for
the first wicket before Coates was bowled Razaq for 4. Tynemouth then lost Chris Beever and
Chad Koen both for ducks with GEM on top, although runs were coming in wides and other
extras. John Callaghan joined Whiting but this promising pairing produced only 1 run with
Whiting bowled by the persistent Razaq for 27. Geoff Simpson did not trouble the scorers but
Stephen Davison and Callaghan put on another 35 runs before Callaghan was adjudged LBW
to Razaq for 20. The tail offered only a token wag with Angus Robertson 2, Don Catley 5,
Steve McLeod 2 not out and Max Robertson a duck with Davison last out for 24. Wides
contributed 21 of 32 extras in the disappointing total of 116 all out in the 24th over. Razaq
recorded 5-37 off his 9 overs.
GEM’s reply saw the diminutive Xohaib Shahid, who has transferred from the Old Record
Players, and Fizan Ahmed opening up with typical aggression. The bowling of Callaghan and
Beever was despatched with impunity. Beever was replaced by Max Robertson after two overs
that cost 26 runs and Callaghan by Catley after 34 runs came off his 4 overs. Robertson and
Catley stemmed the flow and Ahmed was bowled by Robertson for 26. Catley then had Shahid
frustrated and finally stumped for 51 by the alert McLeod. Not many more runs were required
but Tynemouth’s squeeze continued with effect as Coates assembled the slips for Robertson.
This pressure brought reward and another wicket caught by Beever to give Robertson 2-24 off
8.2 overs. Catley bowled 7 overs with 1-21. GEM were inevitably home by 7 wickets and
Tynemouth were denied any further bowling points.
On Tuesday the Thirds progressed to the semi-final of the Jo Loring Cup with an enthralling
victory over Old Record Players. Tynemouth batted first and Tim Whiting had to wait his turn
whilst Geoff Simpson blasted a quick 15. Andrew Davison scored 9 and Derek Whiteman 2
before Stephen Davison came in to help Tim who was by now growing in stature with some
big hits. Stephen fell for 16 and that brought Danny Candlish straight off the motorway into the
action. The pair took the total on from 95 to 200 without further loss in the 20 overs. Tim
amassed 93 not out with 3 sixes and 6 fours and Danny 50 not out with 2 sixes and 4 fours.
The target for Players was onerous but they started right in the groove at almost exactly 10 runs
per over. Max Robertson and Kevin Marsh could not afford any short deliveries. Marsh bowled
Adam Holroyd for 13 with a full length ball following three wides and this was a big wicket
for Tynemouth. Arun Krishnan was run out for 22 but Matt Planchant was keeping the runs
going. Andrew Davison bowled an over for 22 runs including two big sixes so Don Catley and
skipper Paul Coates were tasked with settling things down. Catley took out Planchant when on
50 thanks to a good catch at the wicket by Steve McLeod, bowled Ed Corbett and had last real
hope Colin Quiqley stumped by the ever alert McLeod: 5-0-33-3. Coates benefitted from
catches by Stephen Davison, Geoff Simpson and Marsh to record 4-0-29-3 with Robertson
returning to bowl one for 4-0-37-1 and then catch the last man for Marsh: 4.3-0-30-2.
Tynemouth held off the Players, all out for 154 in the 19th over to earn the right to play
Cramlington at home on June 8th. Likely opposition in the final will be GEM, victors over
Ulgham, who now play Civil Service in the other semi.
TUCK SHOP NEWS
Thanks to the generous donation from Ian
Beever, a new tuck shop is to be located next to
the pavilion. Tuck shops are already in place at
other cricket clubs and, as well as providing a
welcome facility for junior players & parents,
they are believed to generate a significant
contribution to club funds.
The stocking of the shop (sweets, crisps, soft
drinks, etc.) is expected to be handled by the bar
committee, but volunteers are required to staff
the shop during junior practice sessions and
matches.
If you could possibly offer some of your time to serve in the shop - either regularly or
occasionally - or perhaps to coordinate the staffing, Russell Perry would be delighted to hear
from you on 07947 524204 or via russell.perry@csgclaims.com .

Wear your Tynemouth Colours

Team kit for the First X1 and Second X1 is available. Both of these teams are required to have
Colour clothing for the 20/20 competitions so, as a club, we ordered sufficient sets of kit for
both teams. The pack contains one 20/20 top, one white playing shirt, one white SS Jumper,
and one cap. The cost of these is £50 per pack and we would be grateful if all First and Second
X1 players were to buy these from the club. Payment details will be made available when the
kit arrives. A "splash top" will also be made available at a later date. For all other players who
would like to order Tynemouth CC kit you can go online at CF Sports and if you enter
"Tynemouth" in the relevant search box you will be directed to their page for our specific kit.
Questions should be directed to Graeme Hallam: Graeme.Hallam@googlemail.com .

Durham CCC has announced that the under13 Bowl Out Cup will take place at County
Ground, Riverside on 4th June. The competition takes place on the out-field before Durham
Dynamos opening Friends Provident t20 of the season against Lancashire Lightning. This
promises to be one of the sporting highlights of the summer with a tremendous atmosphere
from a capacity crowd and the opportunity to see such international stars in action as Graham
Onions, Stephen Harmison, Albie Morkel and Ross Taylor against Lancashire stars Andrew
Flintoff, Simon Katich and James Anderson.
There are plenty of other activities going on around the ground. Each Bowl Out Cup team will
consist of eight players, all of which will receive a complementary ticket, along with two
accompanying coaches. All participants will go onto the pitch and receive their certificates
from Durham players, with the winners getting the 2010 trophy. Friends and family of
participants will also receive a special ticket offer, where prices are £8 for adults, £3 juniors.
Durham have also announced the summer pre-match coaching camp programme for
juniors. The camps take place on all of Durham’s home Clydesdale Bank 40 and Friends
Provident twenty20 Sunday fixtures. The camps are being run by Durham County Cricket
Foundation in association with the Esh Charitable Trust and Tesco. The camps are a
tremendous opportunity for young cricketers, getting the chance to improve their cricket skills
as part of this unique match-day activity. The coaching sessions run for two hours before the
game. Attendants will then get to see the Durham lads in action challenging for silverware in
the Clydesdale Bank 40 and Friends Provident twenty20, before going onto the pitch to receive
their certificates and other goodies from the Durham players.
The camps are open to any young cricketer under the age of 13, both boys and girls. All
coaches on taking the course will be at least ECB level 2 qualified Durham CCC coaches. The
cost of the camps are £20 each, this includes the coaching session, a match ticket for the
participant and for an accompanying adult. These coaching camps are a fantastic day out for
any young cricketer, having the opportunity to play cricket at the County Ground, Riverside,
