STRUCTURED QUESTIONS (30 MARKS)

(Please answer ALL questions)
[Please use gravitational acceleration, g = ay = 9.80 m s-2]
1. (a). (i).
A turtle and a rabbit engage in a footrace over a distance of
4.00 km. The rabbit runs 0.500 km and then stops for a 90.0-min nap. Upon
awakening, he remembers the race and runs twice as fast. Finishing the
course in a total time of 1.75 hours, the rabbit wins the race. What was his
average speed before he stopped for a nap?
(ii). A baseball player moves in a straight-line path in order to catch a fly ball hit
to the outfield. His velocity as a function of time is shown below. Find
instantaneous acceleration at point A, B and C. Refer to Figure 1.

Figure 1
(b). A typical jetliner lands at a speed of 160 miles/h and decelerates at the rate of (10
miles/h)/s. If the plane travels at a constant speed of 160 miles/h for 1.0 s after
landing before applying the brakes, what is the total displacement of the aircraft
between touchdown on the runway and coming to rest? (Firstly you have to
convert the miles/h to m/s). See Figure 2, below.

(c).

A train is moving at 32 m/s when the engineer is informed that a school bus full
of orphans and puppies is on the track ahead of him. The train is capable of
decelerating at 0.8 m/s2.
(i). How long does it take for the train to come to a halt?
(ii). How far does it go after the brakes are applied?

2.
(a).

A ball is thrown straight up from the ground level, which we take to be y 0.

(i).

At what speed must it be thrown to reach a height ymax meters above the
ground level?
(ii). How long does it take the ball to reach the maximum height, tup?
(b). If we throw a ball straight up in the air and it comes back down to the same spot,
what is the average velocity of the ball over one complete trip up and back down.
(c).

A ball rolls off the edge of a horizontal table 1.32 m high. It strikes the floor at a
point 4.45 m horizontally away from the edge of the table. What was the balls
speed at the moment that it left the table-top?

(d). A bicyclist unfamiliar with the terrain is riding along a level sidewalk when he
goes over the edge of a staircase. He hits the staircase 3.7 m below the edge, and
3.7 m horizontally from the edge. How fast was he going when he went over the
edge?
(4, 2, 2, 2 marks)
3. (a).
(i).

Find a horizontal and vertical components of the 1.00 102 m displacement

of a superhero who flies from the top of a building along the path shown in
Figure 3, below.

Figure 3
(ii). Suppose instead the superhero leaps in the other direction along a

displacement vector B to the top of a flagpole where the displacement

components are given by Bx 25.0 m and By 10.0 m. Find the
magnitude and direction of the displacement vector.
(b). An athlete participants in a long-jump competition, leaping into the air with a
velocity vo at an angle o with the horizontal. Obtain an expression for the length
of the jump in terms of vo, o and g.

(c).

A stone is thrown upward from the top of a building at an angle of 30.0 o to the
horizontal and with an initial speed of 20.0 m/s, as in figure below. The point of
release is 45.0 m above the ground. Neglect the air resistance (Figure 4).

Figure 4
(i). How long does it take for the stone to hit the ground?
(ii). Find the stones speed at impact.
(iii). Find the horizontal range of the stone.
