A funeral and baptism – at first glance these two
events may seem like polar opposite events if one
is not seeing them from a Christian perspective.
As Christians, we see both death and life in these
two sacred occasions. The funeral reminds us of
the temporary status of our earthly bodies and the
reality of a physical death. Christian funerals also
radiate a hope of eternal life and that death gives
way to a heavenly victory. A baptism reminds us
of the death of Jesus and that ‘we have been
buried with Him by baptism into death.’ Of
course, baptism tells the story of new life – ‘for if
we have been united with Him in a death like his,
we will certainly be united with Him in a
resurrection like his.’ In our baptism, we find a
beautiful symbol of how in Christ we die to sin
and then are raised to walk in ‘newness of life.’
As we are immersed, the water symbolizes how
our sins are washed away. Funerals and baptisms
both integrate death, life, and that Jesus is Lord of
both.
We will miss RUBY WEBB and her model of
faithfulness for our church. She was one of my
greatest encouragers and prayer warriors. She is
now cheering us on from a heavenly viewpoint.
Please pray for Joan, Jill, and all her loved ones.
It was my privilege to baptize SEAN
MONTGOMEY – our newest addition to the FBC
family and more importantly the family of God!
Please pray for Sean and support him in his
journey with the Lord and at FBC.
William Carey preached, “Expect great things
from God; Attempt great things for God.” As I
said this past Sunday, I hope this saying might
become a new motto for you and for our church –
maybe post it on your mirror or refrigerator. Let
this challenge ring in our hearts and reveal itself
in our actions in the days to come.
