No matter who you are or where you are
on life's journey, you are welcome
here. We believe in extravagant welcome. This is why we insist that God's communion table is open, not closed, and
God's gift and claim in baptism are irrevocable. We advocate justice for
all. Our congregations extend hospitality
as a sign of God's inclusive love. We
teach that evangelism - offering bread to those
in search of it - is God's mission. Our perspective is global, not provincial. We work with - not
against - people of other faiths. Why?
Because God is still speaking!

"A Prayer for Orlando"

Posted on June 13, 2016
by Rev. Laurie Haller, UMC Blog

Lament
Out of the depths we cry to you, O LORD.
We weep for the lives of fifty people senselessly
gunned down in Orlando, the largest mass killing in
US history.
Many more have been seriously wounded.
There is no magic in the city of the Magic
Kingdom to bring them back.
LORD, hear our voice!
We are tired of the killing, God.
Why is there so much hate in our world?
Do you hear us, God?
Why did you create us this way, with the capacity for great evil as well as great good?
Why won't you intervene, instead of leaving us
to simply grieve?
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of our supplications!
Two guns are purchased the week before, one an assault weapon.
Why are we so fascinated with our guns, God?
A gay nightclub is targeted, the killer swearing
allegiance to the leader of ISIS (and other organizations of hate and destruction) shortly before the shooting.
A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and
bitter weeping. Rachel and dozens of parents are
weeping for their children; they refuse to be comforted
for their children because they are no more.
(Jeremiah 31:15)
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, LORD,
who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
What do I say, God, when asked why we have to

confess our own sins as an act of repentance in

atoning for the sins of our ancestors and others,
including atrocities against Native Americans and
African Americans?
What do I say? I have not committed mass
murder, but I, too, am a sinner, and bear the weight
of collective sin.
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you
with our whole heart.
We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will,
we have broken your law,
we have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience,
through Jesus Christ our LORD. Amen.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
Waiting for your kingdom to come doesn't have to be
passive, God. In fact, we are the ones you call to
bring in your kingdom. You are already there when
a young man sees another gravely wounded at the
nightclub and holds him close to stem the flow of
blood. He says, "I don't know if you are religious,
but I am going to say a prayer for you."
Thank you, God, that in times of crisis, you
give us strength we never knew we had and the
ability to help and comfort others and pray in ways
we never knew we were capable of.
Thank you for the outpouring of love and
support for our LGBTQI brothers and sisters around
the world, which reminds us again that every person
in this world is fearfully and lovingly created by you
and that each one is your beloved.
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
The hope is in us. That's what you whisper in our ear
every day, God.
"You, too, are a sign of hope," God says.
"Will you bear witness to my love in this
world in a way that decries gun violence,
discrimination against the LGBTQI community,

disdain toward refugees, rejection of the poor,
and dismissal of all those who are deemed to be

are not willing to replace hate with love, who
will?"

Housekeeping requestplease do not use sticky
tack for hanging pictures, posters, etc. Unfortunately it is taking paint off the walls and
damaging the sheet rock. A great alternative would be 3M strips. Thank you for
your help on this. Some of the stained
glass windows are in need of caulking repair, removing old caulking and replacing with new. If
you would like to volunteer to take on this project,
please see one of the trustees.

Recently the church doors have been found

unlocked in a couple of instances. If you are the
last one to leave, help insure that the doors are
locked. If you unlock the back doors that aren't
used regularly, please remember to see that they
are locked again. Thanks to everyone for your
help and cooperation in keeping our building secure.

Cannon Ball Run/Walk for Habitat

There were 54 participants and a total of $6,290
raised from donations and registration fees. There
was a 3-way tie for the traveling trophy on most
participants from a group Zion UCC, Higginsville
Grace United Methodist and Heartland Masters
each with 5 participants. Thank you to everyone
that participated, volunteered their time and donated!

Mayview Sesquicentennial
The 120th Mayview Picnic
will be July 8th, 9th and
10th. This will be a very special event as the community will celebrate its
founding 150 years ago. Mayview 150 and
Mayview MO Foundation have been working
very hard for the past year to prepare for our
Sesquicentennial Celebration July 8-10. July
8 will entail the Mayview All-School Reunion,
which will take place in Higginsville. Our picnic
on July 9 will be filled with food, entertainment,
dancing, games (Austin Aardema Faigh will
host the 2 Liter Ring Toss again this year), the
Car Show, a Baby Contest, horseshoe court,
fishing contest, and of course the exciting Mayview Parade and fireworks! We will have a
float that will be the highlight of the parade, and
will celebrate our church as well as the birthday
of our awesome town! The float will be put together the morning of July 9, (please come and
help!) and the parade will begin at Mayview
School because of its length. It will be a full
and fun-filled day! For more information on the
schedule, parade entry form and special events
planned, check out Mayviewpicnic.com.

Mayview Community Garden

The Community Garden in Mayview in thriving,
thanks to Martha Hawthorne, Head Gardener,
and her team of volunteers. Anyone is welcome to harvest food from the garden as it ripens. Also feel free to stop by and pull a few
weeds, anytime. We have regularly scheduled
Saturday and Tuesday mornings, at 10:00
AM when volunteers will be there. We have
had two lessons from Kathy Smith of the Lafayette County Extension Service, on Healthy Living through Gardening.
The Community Garden participants
have enjoyed taking home radishes, lettuce,
spinach and kale. We will soon have other
vegetables, such as potatoes. Children who
help with pulling weeds are each given a coupon for free food at a local restaurant.

Hands Around the World: A Celebration of
God's People at Work in the World!

missionary presentation.

CONFERENCE ANNUAL GATHERING

Delegates: Scott Alvested, Rachael Begemann
Ministerial Representation: Kristin Aardema
Faigh. Other representation: Elaine Hudson
The conference is a great opportunity to
recharge your church enthusiasm as it is a
chance to gather with other loving believers in
Christ. I would encourage any who are able to
attend, even if you are not a delegate.
The conference opened with an outstanding
worship session led by new Conference Minister
Rev. Dr. Ginny Brown Daniel and Rev. Dr. John
C. Dorhaurer. John gave well wishes to the members of Zion UCC in Mayview.
The following day work sessions began with opportunities to explore new ideas for the local
church and increasing knowledge in the wider impact of the UCC. Business sessions included approval of the fiscal year 2017 annual budget for
the conference. Overall giving to OCWM (Our
Churches Wider Mission) was down, and has impacted budget decisions of the conference moving forward. Local churches are encouraged to
look for ways to increase wider support. Of note
to Zion UCC, the fund established by the sale of
Camp Western Hills is actively being looked at as
a source of funding for future youth opportunities
keeping with the original intent of the proceeds.
One resolution was presented to voting delegates to approve to take to the 2017 General
Synod. This resolution presented by the St. Louis
Association would require UCC clergy of all levels
and types to receive inclusion and diversity training as part of ordination and good standing. This
measure was approved after some discussion
and will be presented as a resolution for adoption
at the 2017 General Synod.
Our own Elaine Hudson was nominated and approved to serve on the conference council. This is
a great opportunity for Elaine! Additionally Rev.
Dr. Ginny Brown Daniel was officially installed as
Conference Minister. Rev. Dale Parson was also
approved to leave on sabbatical.
Again, the Conference Annual Gathering is a
great opportunity to serve the local church, engage in fellowship with other UCC members, and
witness the impact of our church on wider communities.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Scott Alvested

BUTTERFLY ROOM
3 And

if I go and prepare a place for you, I will

come again, and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:3
(KJV)

David Watson, priest and writer, 1933 - 1984:

The church is the only society on earth that
never loses a member through death. As a
Christian I believe not just in life after death, but
in life through death.
Charles Simeon, clergyman, 1759-1836:
Be not hasty to offer advice to those who are
bowed down with a weight of trouble. There is a
sacredness in grief which demands our reverence. The very [home] of a mourner must be approached with awe.
Gordon Wilson, who became a peace campaigner and subsequently Irish senator after
being seriously injured by a terrorist bomb
which killed his daughter Marie in Eniskillen,
Northern Ireland, 1927 - 1995:
She held my hand tightly, and gripped me as
hard as she could. She said, 'Daddy, I love you
very much.' Those were her exact words to me,
and those were the last words I ever heard her
say ... But I bear no ill will. I bear no grudge.
Dirty sort of talk is not going to bring her back to
life. She was a great wee lassie. She loved her
profession. She was a pet. She's dead. She's in
heaven and we shall meet again. I will pray for
these men tonight and every night.
Robert Capon Farr, North American writer:
Jesus came to raise the dead. The only qualification for the gift of the gospel is to be dead. You
don't have to be smart. You don't have to be
good. You don't have to be wise. You don't have
to be wonderful. You don't have to be anything ...
You just have to be dead.

EXPRESSION SESSION
THANK YOUs
Thank you for all the love and kindness that has
been shown in my direction and towards my family
I could never express in words the gratitude I have
and the blessings your prayers have been in my
time of recovery. I was waiting to send out a letter
until I could finally say, "I AM HEALED." The Lord
has healed me. I truly believe this came from all of
your prayers. There is still a road of recovery
ahead of me, but the Lord is not done. I believe I
will gain 100% of my strength back and be normal
again, with the exception of a cool bullet hole. I
appreciate all the love and prayers. Please continue to pray for me.
Thank you, I love you.

Fireflies
Everyone knows
how fireflies got their
name, but many
people don't know
how the insects produce their signature
glow. Fireflies have
dedicated light organs that are located
under their abdomens. The insects
take in oxygen and,
inside special cells,
combine it with a
substance called
luciferin to produce light
with almost no heat.
Firefly light is usually intermittent, and flashes in patterns that are unique to each species. Each blinking
pattern is an optical signal that helps fireflies find potential mates. Scientists are not sure how the insects regulate this process to turn their lights on and off.
