A very special welcome to Makkai Lamb, Lachlan Baker, Allegra Van

Gelderen, Eden Culpan and their families to Kaikorai Primary School!

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Thank you to the 91% of parents who have kindly made a
donation to the school so far this year. We are very fortunate to
have this level of support from our parent community. This is a very
important part of our income and it allows us to purchase the goods and
services that the Ministry doesnt budget for. We endeavour in return to make
sure that, where possible, the experiences that make learning richer for your
child are free.
Thank you to the Parent Group and the many parents who have supported
their fundraising efforts over the recent weeks and for all of your support as we
prepare for the upcoming fair.
Finally, thank you to our very hard working teachers. Your childs report will
be coming home today and after reading every students report, I am sure that
you will agree that a lot of extra effort has gone into providing very personal,
insightful and encouraging comments in regard to your childs learning. These
are no simple tick box reports and we look forward to discussing these next
week at the parent teacher interviews.
This is the last newsletter before the end of term next Friday and we hope that
you get a chance to spend time together as a family over the holiday period.

Junior News
What an interesting inquiry we are currently immersed in. Air to Breathe is proving a stimulating and
exciting way of learning how our bodies work. Come into the classrooms and see our skeletons with amazing
wondering questions inside. Our two visits to the Life Education Classroom over the last weeks were exciting
and valuable as Harold the Giraffe and Richard taught us all about the Respiratory system. Next term we look
forward to learning all about the Olympic Games. Our Term 3 VALUE is Independence something the Juniors
are working on all the time.
Thankfully the weather has been kind this winter so far, but please ensure your child has a spare set of clothes
in their bag in case of a fall in the puddles or the mud.

Middle News
It is hard to believe that the term is nearly over, it has gone so quickly.
The spelling bee has been a huge success, and the children are very proud of their efforts! We are absolutely
amazed at the amount of money our children have raised for our trip to Tirohanga. So far children have brought in
just under $2040. Thank you for supporting the spelling bee, it wouldnt have been as successful without parent
support!
We have unfortunately had to postpone our pen pal trips to next term, as our buddy classes have been unable to
find time this term. We will let parents know when a date next term has been confirmed.
Room 3 and Room 5 have been trialling working together during writing time. Children have been carefully
selecting workshops to attend, based around what they would like to work on. The first round of workshops have
been a success and children have been enjoying being able to collaborate with children from another class. We look
forward to continuing this trial into next term.
Children in the middle syndicate have started a running challenge. This running challenge will continue into next
term, and involves children running the distance of a marathon (42.195km). They will be regularly filling in a chart
to show their progress in completing the total distance. As in previous years, some children will finish this challenge
by running the final 2.195km with children from other schools on the day of the Cadbury Marathon. More
information will be sent home about this next term.
Next term we will be swimming with the Jill Clarke Swim School. Dates, costs and more information will be

Senior News
All the children in the senior classes have enjoyed the learning programmes for Inquiry. All classes have
now visited Otago Boys High School to dissect hearts, and all classes have pursued their own inquiries
into fitness systems, playground systems, and systems for being responsible apiarists.
As well as these, all children have also been in groups according to their own interests. One group has
learnt about computer systems and next week will have a visit to the University of Otago to further
their understandings. One group has been investigating a system to make a movie, and they are now in
the middle of filming. Another group has borrowed construction materials to explore the concepts of
construction, incorporating strength, movement and moving loads. And yet another group has
extended their ideas about food manufacturing systems with a visit to McDonalds to see how a fast
food outlet operates.
We seem to have fitted a lot into this very busy term, and at the end of next week the children will have
earned a two-week rest. Happy and safe holidays, everyone.

Parent Teacher Interviews
You are warmly invited to attend the mid-year Parent Teacher Conference to discuss your child's
progress and achievement. We have changed our format to encourage people who do not have
flexible work hours to attend. Therefore the meetings will be held only over two days with a late
night on the Tuesday.
The conferences will be available on:
Tuesday 5th July and Wednesday 6th July
Conference Bookings
Bookings can be made at: http://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz using the School Code 2kpe8
Although the vast majority of parents will be able to access the web from a home computer, a
friend's computer or a workplace computer, our office staff are available to assist any families
having difficulty with the booking process.
Online bookings will close Monday 4th July at 5.00 p.m.

Extra Spelling
Two teams represented Kaikorai in the recent Extra Spelling
Quiz. This is a large Otago event run by the Otago Daily
Times and we were thrilled to see a Kaikorai team finishing
third in the year 5/6 section. Well done to the third placed
team of Ethan Leitch, Ava Holland and Paige Milburn. Close
behind, we congratulate also Matthew Bolter, Holly Mein and
Imogen Hornal

Robotics
A Kaikorai Robo Cup team competed at the recent Otago
Robo Cup event.
Taisei OSullivan- Naito, Holly Mein, Jenny de la Harpe and
Ethan Leitch made up the Kaikorai Computer Whizzes and
competed in the Junior Theater section. Their performance
was a Star Wars theme complete with Light Sabers. The
team finished second in this event. Congratulations
Computer Whizzes.

Kaikorai Kiwis
Kaikorai Kiwis resumes again in Term 3 beginning on the 27th of July. If your child is 4
then they are eligible to come to Kaikorai Kiwis. I look forward to hearing from you and your
pre-schooler next term.
Susan Oldfield

Matariki
Last Thursday our children celebrated Matariki the Maori New Year. Classes shared some
fantastic performances with one another. They worked hard on various activities such as making
poi, weaving, playing musical instruments and singing. The day concluded with a rousing
performance from our talented Kapa Haka group.

Art Extension
This term the Extension Art Group have been exploring the topics of painting techniques and
use of colour. A highlight this week was a trip to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. We looked at
some paintings in which the artists had used similar techniques to those we have been learning
about. The children also enjoyed the interactive exhibition by Yayoi Kusama The
Obliteration Room. The children have produced some great artwork and this is currently
being displayed around the school.

Parent Group
Only 4 months until the Fair!!!! The Fair organisation is
coming together really well, with lots of people working really
hard to make this a fantastic fair. We still need approximately
40 volunteers to help with various stalls on the day. If you are
able to help out please email us on pg@kaikorai.school.nz
If you're not able to help on the Sat 29th October, but free in
the few days before the fair we need you too!! So let us know!
Thank you also to everyone for being so generous with the
bringing weeks this term. We are waiting to hear which class
has won this weeks Chocolate bringing week!! We'll let you
know next week...
We have had great support with the 1st Aid kit Fundraiser too
- these will be distributed as soon as we receive them. Thanks
to everyone who bought these - great to see you supporting
such a valuable product.
The next Parents Group meeting is Wednesday 3rd August at
Coffee Culture 7pm - new parents are always welcome to
attend.

Sports Update
As we run through the mid way point of
winter sports for Kaikorai Kids, we wish to
thank the parents for their continued
support. We have parents managing and
coaching basketball, hockey and netball
and we are grateful for that. Some
children take sports practices at school too.
Senior students have taken some skill
sessions and others help teachers with
sports teams. One ex pupil has been
helping with the A netball team and
umpiring their games. Thank you Grace
Southby.
