Quakers rise to the top as District 4 12U champs

Moorestown 12U baseball team took on Mt. Laurel on June 27, winning the championship game, 8-4
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestowns 12U Quakers
baseball team has hit a home run,
becoming the District 4 12U
Champions.
The Quakers played against
Mt. Laurel on Monday, June 27 for
the District 4 12U championship,
losing the first game, but coming
out on top in the second game, 8-4.
It is an honor for the boys to
represent Moorestown playing
competitive baseball in South Jersey. Winning the District 4 12U
Championship is definitely the
season highlight so far, Manager
Robert Intenzo said.
The boys have been practicing
as a team since March. Theyve
focused on the fundamentals of
baseball, such as hitting, fielding,
pitching and baserunning. Intenzo also said the boys have been focusing on the mental aspects of
the game, to be focused and aware
of everything happening on the
field.
You have to be focused 110 percent of the time when in the field.
If someone is on first base and
running to second, you need to
throw there, and if the ball goes
in the outfield, you need to be prepared to cut it to third. Its all
about being focused from the first
pitch to the last out, Intenzo
said.

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

Moorestowns Ryan Mullock jogs to his team waiting to celebrate and congratulate their teammate after
he hit a home run in the first game of the 12U district 4 baseball championship on Monday, June 27.
Moorestown lost the first game, but beat Mt. Laurel 8-4 for the championship.
The boys had a pretty good season, recording a 19-7 record. However, Intenzo said there were two
games that stood out besides winning the district championship.
The first was when Moorestown
played Mt. Laurel about a month
ago in a tournament and, having
never beaten them, they came out

on top. Also, at that same tournament, the Quakers played against

last years regional winners and,
not having all of their guys there,
lost only by two runs.
That just solidified our
thoughts that we could win the
district this year, Intenzo said.
However, the season wasnt

without some struggle. Intenzo

said there is a lot of failure in
baseball, with missing the ball,
striking out and losing the game.
However, the boys have learned
as a team and individually to deal
with failure and overcome challenges.
We try to relate baseball to

life. Youll have trials and tribulations throughout life, but you
need to be able to handle it and
move on and not dwell on it, Intenzo said.
Intenzo said he hopes the boys
walk away with the value of setting goals, putting in hard work
and learning how to deal with adversity and overcoming it.
Going into the final game, Intenzo said the team was confident. They knew if the boys
played well they would win. They
didnt change preparation for the
final game, as what they had been
doing so far seemed to be working.
During the first game, the boys
played hard against Mt. Laurel.
However, Mt. Laurel started
strong with a home run that
earned three runs in the early
part of the game. The boys tried
to gain back the win, but ultimately fell, 18-9.
We came out a little flat and
fell behind early. There were just
too many errors. I dont know if
they were nervous, but we had
more errors in that game than we
had from all of the previous tournaments. We were hitting the ball
well, but errors killed us, Intenzo said.
However, that wasnt the end
for the Quakers, as they had a secplease see STATE, page 14

THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 612, 2016

in our opinion

Social media more than just pics

Police departments using Facebook, Twitter to help reduce crime
he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someones opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someones character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internets power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
make it easier to connect people all
over the world, and even easier to do
so in a negative fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.

Your thoughts
Do you follow your local police
department on Twitter, Facebook or
other online sites? What is your police
department doing well? How can it
improve? Tell us your thoughts.

Local police departments have attributed significant drops in crime

over the last few years to the their utilization of social media.
More departments throughout the
state are utilizing Facebook and Twitter to their advantage to notify the
community of important announcements and ask for residents help in
catching a criminal, for example.
Those two social media sites, as well
as information sharing service Nixle,
not only notify residents of crimes,

alerts and issues, but also serve as

communication tools for residents to
submit their own issues and concerns
directly to the department.
Its much easier, and more efficient,
for residents to submit information on
the computer than it is to call in or
stop by the police departments offices.
Its great to see that police departments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and providing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
To those departments that are utilizing the power of the Internet to its
fullest potential, bravo; keep it up. To
those that arent, its time to step up
and go out on a limb. Its worth it.

MoorArts to bring musical Aida to the stage

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
MoorArts summer musical will take locals on a journey to ancient Egypt, where
they will experience the struggle between
love and war.
The 2016 MoorArts summer musical is
Elton John and Tim Rice's award-winning
musical Aida, featuring music in a variety of styles from modern pop to African
with a story that will make you laugh and
also tug at the heart strings. Aida will be
performed July 8, 9, 10, 13, 15 and 16 at the
Moorestown High School for $12 to $15,
benefitting the non-profits scholarships
and grants.
We have a great directing team with a
wonderful, talented cast. The story
should be told and there are not many opportunities to see and hear Aida. You will
be supporting the fine and performing
arts, knowing that our funds go back into

grants and scholarships for our teachers

and students. It will be a great evening of
entertainment, Andrea Seuren, Moorarts
vice president, said.
Everyone in the cast is super talented.
The show is going to be great. The opportunity to see such a good production of this
phenomenal show for pretty cheap isn't
something people should miss out on. I
hope the community will take advantage of
the art right by them, said Jonah Levinson, who is playing Radames.
MoorArts is an all-volunteer, non-profit
organization dedicated to supporting the
fine and performing arts in the
Moorestown community and schools. It
does a variety of education and events
throughout the year. However, the musical
usually only comes around once a year.
MoorArts is a great institution that allows opportunities for every kind of artist,
hosting a variety of events from art shows
to musicals to galas. They provide the com-

ond game against Mt. Laurel. Mt.
Laurel already had one loss,
while before the district game
Moorestown had none. The tournament was double elimination,
so the Quakers still had a chance.
Going into the second game, Intenzo said the boys were not defeated and still confident. However, they knew they needed to really put in some effort to become
champions.
We try to keep their spirits up.
When you get beat, you need to
keep fighting back. They knew
from the beginning if they lost
one, they had a chance, Intenzo
said.
The second game ended with a
much better result. With an out-

standing pitching effort from

Ryan Mullock and the team giving its all, they defeated Mt. Laurel.
We were very happy for the
boys and very proud of them. Mt.
Laurel is an excellent team, Intenzo said.
As the game ended late, there
really wasnt much time for celebration. Intenzo said the team
would plan something in the future to celebrate.
The Quakers then focused on
what was coming up next the
State Championship Tournament
in Washington Township that
was scheduled for last Saturday,
July 2. If they won there, the next
step is regionals in Marlton.
We are also scheduled to play
in a tournament in Cooperstown,
N.Y., which is a tradition for
Moorestown 12U teams, Intenzo
said.

Camps offer interest

range, from sports to arts
By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Department of Parks &
Recreation has a series of oneand two-week camps that complement the Summer Parks Programs, Summer Theater and
Teen Theater Camps. All Recreation camps and clinics are open
to Moorestown residents and are
the perfect answer to that summer boredom. The camps offer a
range from sports to arts to personal enrichment. There truly is
something for everyone.
New this year, the Summer Art
Camp will be an art-intensive
week incorporating a variety of
mediums including drawing,
painting, 3-D sculptural art and a
group mural. Children will create
a variety of projects designed to
promote their natural curiosity
and creativity. Led by Artist-InResidence Sophia Geiger, boys and
girls in grades K-4 will spend the
week of Aug. 1 to 5 making personal masterpieces. Children will
enjoy experiential learning with
seasoned, apprentice art students.
The Recreation Basketball
Clinic, under new direction by
Ted Flick, will provide boys and
girls in grades one to eight the opportunity to fine-tune and develop their fundamental basketball
skills. In addition to skills and
drills, players will put these new
talents to use during inter-squad
games. This evening camp runs
on Thursdays from June 30 to
July 28.
The Recreation Soccer Camp
also returns under the instruction of Coach Rich McConnell.
McConnell will provide boys and
girls in grades K-three fundamental skills training, sportsmanship
and general knowledge of the
sport. The emphasis of this program is to develop solid soccer
players in a fun and educational
environment. The Recreation
Soccer Camp will run from July
11-14.
McConnell also heads up the
Recreation
Summer
Sports

Camp. Children who just love

sports will enjoy the overview of
fundamentals for soccer, baseball,
softball, street hockey, tennis, basketball and flag football. McConnell offers sports and player
development in this end-of-summer camp. This week-long activity is perfect for seasoned or new
athletes. From Aug. 15 to 19 or
Aug. 22 to 26 children ages 5 to 12
can develop a new set of skills in
a fun and relaxed environment.
The Bread Baking Summer
camp is a four-day specialty camp
that will teach the basics on bread
production. Additionally, bakers
will learn how to make quick
breads and tasty treats. A selftaught baker, Diane MacFeeters
has mastered yeast breads over 45
years of practice.
Chef Katie Sklarow will be
teaching the Cookie and Cake
Summer Camp for children in
grades five to seven. This camp
will focus on sweets such as cookies, cupcakes, cakes, muffins and
pies. Sklarow will also be leading
Kid Chef ! Culinary Cooking
Camp. Junior foodies will explore
and learn about the intricacies of
meal development and sound
culinary practices.
In addition to these specialized
camps, the Department of Parks
& Recreation will run its four to
six week day-camps: the Summer
Parks Program, the Summer Theater Program, the Teen Theater
Program, The Special Needs
Summer Camp and Four Is Fun.
In addition to the traditional
bowling and roller skating trips,
the department is sponsoring a
series of nature programs and
Junior Ranger programs in conjunction with the Burlington
County Parks System. Field trips
are for Summer Parks Program
attendees only and can be registered for individually, but space is
limited.

Kids with cancer can just be kids at Camp No Worries

Camp, which hosts children with cancer and their siblings, started by Moorestowns Kasey Hall Massa
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
With more than 100 campers
from New Jersey ages 6 through
16 in attendance, Camp No Worries, a program of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties, opened its doors to children
with cancer and their siblings
from June 26 through July 1.
The camp was founded in 1995
by the Hall and Massa families
after they experienced firsthand
the physical and psychological aspects of a childhood cancer diagnosis when 11-year-old Kasey Hall
Massa of Moorestown was diagnosed with a malignant brain
tumor. After the emotional strain
from this journey to recovery,
Massa established Camp No Worries as a YMCA of Burlington
and Camden Counties program
while she was attending West Virginia University.
It was important to us to hold
this event in Tabernacle because
we serve the South Jersey region
and we wanted to keep the camp
close to the childrens families
homes. We have kids who leave to
go to treatment centers and therefore are able to come right back
afterward, Massa said. I think
being close to home makes it
more comfortable for families
who may be worried about sending their children away and for
kids who may not have been away
from mom or dad in a very long
time.
For the past 22 years, CNW has
offered these children a weeklong
getaway to Camp Inawendiwin in
Tabernacle. Here, campers can
forget about their daily troubles
as they participate in various activities, including archery, boating, human tic-tac-toe, song creation, camp-wide tug-of-war and
more.
My favorite part of Camp No
Worries is all of the people I get to
see every year because of it. Its
like a big family that I miss 51
weeks out of the year, until I finally get to see them again that 52nd
week, said Ben Anenberg, a 16year-old Shawnee High School

LINDSEY NOLEN/The Sun

junior who has been attending
this camp since he was 6 years
old.
Anenberg was diagnosed with
leukemia at age 4 and first met
Massa at a clinic in Voorhees
while receiving treatments. Since
then, he and his younger brother
Artie have been attending for
seven years together loving
every year they get to spend together at the camp.
I love coming to camp because
now that I am a counselor, I get to
share the amazing experiences
that I had when I was a camper
here, said Nicole Fahs, a Seneca
High School alumnus and Shamong resident. Camp No Worries is really a family.
Fahs first attended Camp No
Worries with her older brother
Brett, a cancer survivor. Today,
she gives back through her volunteer efforts and inspires others
through her music. Her website,
www.nicolefahs.com, has videos
of her music on YouTube.
Bringing a colorful twist to this
years festivities, the theme
Color Warped was integrated
into the weeklong competitions.
Cabins were organized into different color teams, earning points
each day through participation in

the numerous activities. At the

end of the week, the team with
the most points was named CNW
Color Warped Champion 2016.
Other event highlights from
CNWs 22nd year included a tea
party and rocket ship building
day, an inflatable creations outdoor evening activity and the
color run and other messy games
held on the final day of camp.
Run solely by volunteers, CNW
has a staff of pediatric oncology
nurses, social workers, cabin
counselors and program heads
all chosen for their experience
and enthusiasm in working with
children affected by cancer. Each
of these volunteers was selected
for their demonstration of commitment, honesty, courage, perseverance, respect and responsibility characteristics any parent
would expect of someone spend-

ing a week caring for their child

with cancer.
I think having attended this
camp could have changed my experience because it would have
showed me that there are other
kids like me and I wouldnt have
felt so alone, Massa said. I also
think it could have showed me
that there are still fun things I
could have done that everything
wasnt a cant and there were
still cans out there.

Rotary kicks off rubber band ball fundraiser

Recently
the
Moorestown
Breakfast Rotary Club hosted
Mark Hatoff, a director at Community Treatment Solution, to
kick-off its Worlds Largest Rubber Band Ball fund-raising project.
CTS, a nonprofit organization
based in Moorestown, which was
established in 1990 to address the
needs of New Jersey families and
youth who have been impacted by
abuse, neglect and abandonment,

GUTTER
CLEANING

609-586-2300
GUTTER DOCTOR

has been approved by Guinness

World Records to try to build the
biggest rubber band ball in the
world.
To break the record of 9,032
pounds, you can make it possible
by joining in the Bands that Unite
US campaign and the Rubber
Band Bus tour. The Rubber Band
Bus is a traveling program intended to unite everyone in support of youth who have been
abused, neglected and abandoned.
The rubber band ball is making stops at events, public and private sites and locations where
people have the opportunity to
add rubber bands, take photos
and, most importantly, be a part

of this huge, worthy and fun endeavor.

Donations and sponsorships
are appreciated to support recreational therapy for CTS youth,
but there is no cost for the ball to
come to your locations, which
would be publicized through CTS
social media and website postings.
All participants will have the
opportunity to get their name entered for the record, as well as
having their photo taken for social media postings and they will
also receive a CTS Rubber Band
Bus wristband.
More information is at
www.ctsnj.org/donate-to-the-rubber-band-bus/.

hearsals began the end of May,

and Director John Smitherman
has been directing the cast ever
since. Smitherman has never
seen another production of
Aida, so he feels he will be
bringing originality to the show.
Another original part for
MoorArts Aida is students
from Moorestown High School
were given the opportunity to create avant garde costume designs
for the Runway Scene. Seven
designs were chosen and costumers are working with the designers to create the pieces that
will be worn in the show.
MoorArts makes it a point to provide learning and mentoring
from every experience in unique
ways.
(It is) a collaboration between
the performing arts and fine arts
all to help tell the story of Aida,
Seuren said.
In the show, enslaved Nubian
princess Aida finds her heart entangled with Radames, an Egyptian soldier who is betrothed to the
Pharaoh's daughter, Amneris. As
their forbidden love blossoms,
Aida is forced to weigh her heart
against the responsibility she
faces as leader of her people. Aida
and Radames' love for one another becomes a shining example of
true devotion that ultimately

transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring

nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.
It has been one of my absolute
favorite musicals since I was little. It's a timeless story with absolutely beautiful music. Though
based in ancient Egypt, it still explores the complexities of lives
aligning and misaligning, Levinson said.
Those involved with Aida
hope people come to enjoy and
immerse themselves in the emotions and music of the show, and
possibly walk away with a lesson
or better understanding of the
world. But mostly, they want people to come to experience the talented cast and live, local theater
at its best.
I think they should come out
because I think theater is really
important in (our) cultural lives.
Everyone in the cast is so talented
and its really awesome to see talented people perform. You get
goosebumps from live performances that you wouldnt get from
a movie or listening on a soundtrack. I think it is a great experience for anyone, Roxanne Paul,
who is playing Amneris, said.
Aida will be performed July
8, 9, 13, 15 and 16 at 6 p.m. in the
Moorestown High School Auditorium, 350 Bridgeboro Road. There
is a special matinee on July 10 at 2
p.m. that has special needs and
ASL accommodations. Tickets
are $12 to $15, available online

Special to The Sun

In MoorArts production of
Aida, Egyptian Princess Amneris, played by Roxanne Paul, feels
the weight of all of her duties
while her betrothed Radames,
played by Jonah Levinson, falls
for
the
enslaved
Nubian
princess, Aida, played by Alisha
Kothari, who too worries about
her country and people.
and at the door. Proceeds from
this event will support MoorArts
scholarships and teacher grants
for arts-related projects in the
public schools.

MoorArts and the musical, as
