GAMMARaY
RAYlOGGinG
LOGGING
GeneRal
the gamma ray log measures the natural gamma radiation produced by the disintegration, or decay,
of radioactive nuclei in the formation. Since these nuclei tend to be more abundant in certain types of
formations, the gamma ray log is basically a lithology log. the gamma ray log is used primarily as a
shale log in the petroleum industry, since shale are generally the most radioactive sediments
encountered in these wells. this log is used, in the mining and mineral industry, to locate and
evaluate deposits of radioactive minerals such as potash or uranium ore.
the gamma ray log is one of the most, if not the most, commonly used well logs. Part of this wide
usage is due to the versatility of the log, which can be used in both cased and open holes with any
type of borehole fluid. the utility of this log is also enhanced by the fact that it can be combined with
many other logging services, and thus can be run with little additional cost either in money or rig time.
Gamma ray logs are usually calibrated in aPi units. an aPi Gamma ray unit is defined as 1/200 of
the difference in log deflection between zones of low and high radiation in the gamma ray calibration
pit of the University of houston. this pit has three zones of artificially manufactured homogeneous
radioactivity that correspond to the range of natural radioactivity. the center zone contains a
radioactive concrete whose radiation is equal to approximately twice that of average shale in the Midcontinent region. the level of radioactivity was achieved in the center zone by incorporating in it 13
ppm uranium, 24 ppm thorium, and 40,000 ppm potassium.

A. GENERAL
1. Suspend perforating operations and isolate loaded guns when confronted with electrical storms, dust
storms, or thunder storms at the job site.
2. continuity checks are to be performed only with a blasting galvanometer or an approved digital
blaster multimeter.
B. ARRIvAL ON LOCATION
1. hold spot safety meeting.
2. check for hazards and correct.
3. no smoking except in permissible areas.
4. check rig for stray voltage. eliminate if present.
5. install safety grounding cables. Do not proceed if voltage is in excess of .25 volts.
C. BEFORE ARMING GUN
1. Put patch cord in safe position.
2. Shut off ac generator. Do not restart until gun is 200 ft. (60 meters) into well.
3. turn off all power switches and leave off until gun is 200 ft. (60 meters) into well.
4. turn off all radio transmitters.
5. Put blasting caps in use, no radio transmissions signs out along all access roads.
6. clear line of fire of all personnel, and clear area of all unnecessary personnel.
D. PERFORATING GAMMA RAY TOOLS
Users of Titan perforating gamma ray tools must be aware of the following conditions:
1. Perforating gamma ray tools use an electrical energy storing device. When attached to a wire line
cable the energy storage capability is increased. two 1000 volt diodes and a 120 ohm. resistor are in
series with the bottom of the tool to prevent positive current from firing the gun. however, any
electrical device is subject to failure. tool power is not to be applied until the instrument is at least
200 ft. (60 meters) into the hole. turn off power and place system in the safe position when the gun
reaches 200 ft. (60 meters) from the surface as it is being withdrawn from the well.
2. Use resistor type caps.
3. the tool is designed to run on positive current. When a negative current is applied, with respect to
the cable armor, detonation of the blasting cap will occur.
Maintenance requirements for shooting and perforating tools are generally higher and must have
trained personnel to ensure the safe use of these instruments.
