Loading Sounds
Before you begin to load anything, we suggest that you save all of your user data as an "ALL" file to your
removable media. This safeguard will keep you from permanently losing any of your sounds or settings.
Loading: When you first load the CD into your computer, you should see three directories: Samples,
Voices, and Info.
The Voices directory contains voices and performances. There are four pairs of files: two pairs
designed for the ES6 and two pairs designed for the ES8. Some performances in the ES6 files use
transposition to maximize keyboard splits (typically, right hand piano and left hand bass). In contrast, the
ES8 files always keep the piano sound in its original octave. To play the piano sounds, use your computer
to copy one pair of files onto your storage media and load it into the Motif ES. For each pair, one file name
will have a "7" near the end, the other will have an "8." Copy them both to your storage media, but note
that you will only see the name with a "7" in File mode on the Motif ES.
For example, an ES8 owner would likely copy STN_ES8.W7A and STN_ES8.W8A to their removable
media. Once the media is connected to the Motif ES, the owner would load STN_ES8.W7A.
STN_ES8.W8A would not be visible on the keyboard's loading screen, but the Motif ES would
automatically use it in the loading process.
Because voices and performances are retained in memory when the unit is turned off, you will not need to
reload these files each time the unit is turned on.

Differences between the file types: For each of the ES6 and ES8 configurations, there are AllVoice
files (ending in V) and All files (ending in A). The All Files contain performances and voices. The
AllVoice files contain voices only (no performances).
The Motif ES operating system will not allow you to load a bank of performances without loading an entire
All file, so if you need to keep any user data in memory, you may want to load performances individually.
(In File mode, choose Performance as the file type to load.)
To keep your own user voices in memory, you may want to load voices individually as well (by selecting
Voice as the file type to load). Just be sure to load them to the same location as they are stored in the
file; otherwise, the performances will not function correctly.
Note that loading an All file will overwrite any samples already in memory; loading an AllVoice file will
not. (If you choose to load one of the provided All files, be sure to load it before loading samples.)
ES 6 Users:
- To load voices and performances, use STN_ES6.W7A and STN_ES6.W7A.
- To load voices only, use STN_ES6.W7V and STN_ES6.W7V.
ES 8 Users:
- To load voices and performances, use STN_ES8.W7A and STN_ES8.W7A.
- To load voices only, use STN_ES8.W7V and STN_ES8.W7V.

ES 7 users will probably want to use the ES8 files. These keep all piano sounds in their original octave.
For more information about file types and loading, see the File Mode chapter of the Motif ES manual,
especially pages 269-270.

The Samples directory contains four different banks (four pairs of files), each of which require a
different amount of sample RAM to load. All banks are named identically, except for the last three
characters. These characters specify the amount of sample RAM (in megabytes) each bank will require:
76Mb, 59Mb, 59Mb (alternate sample set), and 46Mb. To play the piano sounds, use your computer to
copy one of these pairs of files onto your storage media and load it into the Motif ES.
For example, to load the 76Mb bank, you will need to copy both STEIN_76.W7W and STEIN_76.W8W to
your storage media. Note that the Motif ES' screen will only display STEIN_76.W7W. You will not see
STEIN_76.W8W listed, but the Motif ES will use it automatically in the loading process.
Because RAM samples are not retained in memory when the unit is turned off, you will need to load one
of these banks each time the unit it turned on. **Remember: If youre also loading an All file, be sure to
load it before loading the samples.
Bank descriptions:
- STEIN_76.W7W and STEIN_76.W8W The largest bank. Uses all available sampled notes at
44.1kHz sampling frequency. 76Mb RAM required.
- STEIN_59.W7W and STEIN_59.W8W Uses fewer sampled notes, all at 44.1kHz sampling
frequency. 59Mb RAM required.
- STEIN59B.W7W and STEIN59B.W8W Uses all available sampled notes, with ff samples at
44.1kHz sampling frequency and mf samples at 22.05kHz sampling frequency. 59Mb RAM
required.
- STEIN_46.W7W and STEIN_46.W8W Uses fewer sampled notes, with ff samples at 44.1kHz
sampling frequency and mf samples at 22.05kHz sampling frequency. 46Mb RAM required.
The Info directory contains this documentation file and the unique user registration file. This
documentation file explains the organization of the CD and describes the sounds, and the registration file
lists the unique number with which your CD is registered to you.

Voice List
Ap: Studio 1 Full, dynamic grand piano. The velocity response is tailored to provide a present,
studio sound. Velocity-switched.
Ap: Studio 2 Similar to Ap: Studio 1, except with a brighter, more restricted velocity response.
Velocity-switched.
Ap: Jazzer Compared to the "Studio" voices, this piano is slightly warmer, and it has a greater
velocity-to-amplitude response. The dynamic range of this piano makes it easy to achieve soft comping in
the left hand and present solo lines in the right hand. Velocity-switched.
Ap: Dynamic Velocity-switched piano with a large dynamic response. Soft velocities yield very warm
tones while hard velocities yield assertive tones.
Ap: Classical Warm, velocity-switched piano suited to classical music. Acoustically intimate.

Ap: Recital 1 Similar to "Ap: Classical," but with simulated recital hall acoustics.
Ap: Recital 2 Alternate recital hall piano. The stereo imaging of this piano causes it to sound more
distant than "Ap: Recital 1."
Ap: TV Drama Warm, heavily-compressed piano designed for TV or film scoring. Try playing sparse
notes in the upper register.
Ap: Resonant Compressed piano with emphasized mid range frequencies.
Ap: Bright Bright piano with a somewhat restricted velocity response. Velocity-switched.
Ap: Compressed Bright, heavily-compressed piano designed to cut through dense mixes.
Ap: Razor Extremely bright piano with heavy compression and moderate use of a phaser effect.
Designed for use as a dance piano or special effect.
Ap: Studio 1ff Single velocity version of "Ap: Studio 1." Uses ff velocity only.
Ap: Studio 2ff Single velocity version of "Ap: Studio 2." Uses ff velocity only.
Ap: Jazzer ff Single velocity version of "Ap: Jazzer." Uses ff velocity only.
Ap: Dynamic ff Single velocity version of "Ap: Dynamic." Uses ff velocity only.
