VA TECH HYDRO was created by a
merger of the hydro activities of
VA TECH ESCHER WYSS,
VA TECH VOEST MCE and VA TECH ELIN.
This now bundles all electrical and
mechanical engineering capabilities.
VA TECH HYDRO is divided into four
business units: Large Hydro (including
Penstock & Gates), Compact Hydro,
Service & Rehab and Combined Cycle.
Global Top Player
VA TECH HYDRO is the worlds second
largest supplier on the market for
hydro power generation, and holds a
leading position in selected segments
such as bulb-type and Pelton turbine

Complete single-source
solutions
The Compact Hydro range not only
includes axial-flow, Francis and Pelton turbines for heads up to 1000 m, but also
electrical equipment and controls as well as
comprehensive services.
We cooperate with leading partners in civil
works and hydraulic steel structures to offer
turnkey plants if required.
Minimal interface outlay and optimally
matched components ensure the high
availability and cost-effectiveness of
VA TECH HYDRO installations.

Aggregate concept
Completely assembled aggregates are shoptested, tubed and cabled ready for immediate
installation.
These compact aggregates also bring structural
cost savings and simplify
foundation work.
Compared with conventional
concepts, erection and
commissioning times
are more than halved as a
result.

Comprehensive
hydroelectric engineering:
our speciality
A modular concept such as the Compact
Hydro range needs a wide selection of
components covering the entire spectrum of
hydroelectric applications.
Since a chain is only as strong as its weakest
link, the best solution is always a system with
perfectly harmonized components.
Our Compact Hydro range is a collection of
such optimally balanced systems for all
applications.
As a comprehensive single-source concept
from planning to logistics the Compact
Hydro range offers state-of-the-art
customized solutions for a worthwhile return
on your investment.
Engineering services
As overall system supplier, we are bound
to advise our customers competently
and handle their projects with meticulous
care.
Project studies, site-optimized installation
plans with loading data, assistance
with civil works in inflow and outflow
areas, electrical system layout,
detailed operating and maintenance
manuals all are matter-of-course
for us.
And it goes without saying that efficient
teamwork with consulting engineers and
other suppliers is equally important.
8
Cost-effectiveness and
financing
The number of units, type of turbine, optimal plant
capacity, electrical voltage levels, etc. are
questions which can only be answered by
examining several alternatives to ensure maximum
economy.
We use computer-aided engineering (CAE) to make
such decisions quickly, accurately and reliably.
Based on the experience and economics know-how
of VA TECH HYDRO specialists, we help our
customers plan and organize their project
financing just as we assist them with support
programmes.
Services
Our Compact Hydro solutions are supplemented
by a wide range of services. Customer consulting
services begin at the project engineering stage, and
continue with support during the implementation
phase and training the operators.
Environment-friendly power
generation
Our Compact Hydro range has been created for
modern, environmentally compatible power
generation.
All turbines in this range are designed for the
unobtrusive upgrading of small hydro plants, thus
9
Ecology-oriented
Our Compact Hydro range
proves that water power can
become still more environmentally
compatible.
For example, our latest designs
pay special attention to
eliminating water pollution:
Water-lubricated shaft
guide bearings on Kaplan turbines
oil-free Kaplan runners
Double sealing systems for
oil-lubricated components
Biologically decomposable oils
Ultra-reliable control and
monitoring systems
