Abstract

This study intends to study how works the progressive form in Brazilian
Portuguese and French, comparing both languages.

This subject isnt too much

explored in Brazil; it means that this present study is something new in the Brazilian
linguistics studies. Both languages show different ways to express the progressive
form. In Brazilian Portuguese, for example, the speakers usually use the periphrasis
estar+gerundio to express some progressive sentence. In French, there are something
similar, like tre en train de + infinitive but the majority of the linguistics do not
consider this form a progressive form. They argue that the French speakers frequently
use the simple present to express a progressive sentence; however in this work we will
consider that both forms are possible in French.
One of the main point in this work is to show that the periphrasis
estar+gerundio can have two possible readings: a cursive reading, that describe only
a event in accomplishment, and one other habitual reading, that describes the emergency
of a same event. In the same way, the simple present in French makes non- occidentals
generalizations. Although the periphrases tre en train de dont express
generalizations, it is able to generate cursive and habitual interpretations. For this
discussion, a brief revision of the subjects relates to progressivity, like tense, aspect,
events were made.
The Brazilian Portuguese examples were creating by our native speaker
intuition. The French data was withdrawn of the French MConcord Corpus, elaborated
by the professor Phillipe Humbl (UFSC). French native speakers were interviewed in
a test of judgment of grammaticality. Being a comparative study, this study dont have
any results, but it has largely implications in the study of French and Portuguese L2.
