MOCK TEST4

TestI
English Language

Directions (Q. 110): Read the following passage

carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain
words are given in bold to help you to locate them while
answering some of the questions.
Every survey ever held has shown that the image of an
attractive woman is the most effective advertising gimmick.
She may sit astride the mudguard of a new car, or step into it
ablaze with jewels; she may lie at the mans feet stroking his
new socks; she may hold the petrol pump in a challenging
pass, or dance through woodland glades in slow motion in all
the glory of a new shampoo; whatever she does her image
sells. The gyniolatry of our civilization is written large upon
its face, upon hoardings, cinema screens, television,
newspapers, magazines, tins, packets, cartons, bottles, all
consecrated to the reigning deity, the female fetish. Her
dominion must not be thought to entail the rule of women, for
she is not a woman. Her glossy lips and matt complexion, her
unfocussed eyes and flawless fingers, her extraordinary hair
all floating and shining, curling and gleaming, reveal the
inhuman triumph of cosmetics, lighting, focusing and
printing. She sleeps unruffled, her lips red and juicy and
closed, her eyes as crisp and black as if new painted, and her
false lashes immaculately curled. Even when she washes her
face with a new and creamier toilet soap her expression is an
tranquil and vacant and her paint as flawless as ever. If ever
she should appear tousled and troubled, her features are
miraculously smoothed to their proper veneer by a new
washing powder on a bouillon cube. For she is a doll; weeping,
pouting or sinking, running or reclaiming, she is a doll.

the passage.
Here woman has been a representative of an attractive
advertising object and not as a human being.
Only by a careful reading of the passage can we reach
on this conclusion.
Again the term reigning deity has been used for an

The sentence is correct.
Replace adjective careful by adverb carefully because
it modifies the verb knits.
Most of implies a selection from many; so, countries.
It should be why he was.
If A is triggered by B, B causes it to begin to happen.
Nothing in the passage suggests the severity

Confusion is in keeping with uncertainty and
doubt.
Same as above. If you are a sceptic, you have a
tendency to doubt things.
If you hover, you are in an uncertain or unsettled
situation.
If you equate A with B, you say that A has the same
effect as B.
Since the idea comes from abroad, as the word western
suggests, it is an import.
If you graft one idea on to another, you try to join
them.
If an argument is tenable, it is reasonable and can be
successfully defended against criticism. That is to
say, the argument does not hold good at all after the
Nehru era. When the ideology itself is losing appeal,
whence the West-East argument?
The clue lies in diminished.
