YOUNG SCIENTISTS JOINING FORCES FOR EXCELLENCE IN BIOMATERIALS RESEARCH

MAY 28TH 29TH 2015, BUCHAREST, ROMANIA

WELCOME MESSAGE
Dear young scientist in biomaterials, dear colleague, student and friend, dear delegate,
Welcome to the workshop YOUNG SCIENTISTS JOINING FORCES FOR EXCELLENCE IN
BIOMATERIALS RESEARCH, welcome to University Politehnica of Bucharest and welcome in
Bucharest!
This is a combined initiative of the Advanced Polymer Materials Group(APMG) from University
Politehnica of Bucharest and of the Young Scientist Forum (YSF) from The European Society for
Biomaterials.
The main aim of the current event is to bring together young researchers in the field of
biomaterials to discuss on research and to seize future opportunities by joining cross-boundary
forces.
The scientific programme of the meeting combines topics related to novel approaches in the
design, characterization and biocompatibility of polymers and polymer composites for tissue
engineering. Aside from scientific aspects, the workshop will also include extra-scientific lectures on
funding and technological transfer issues. Very interesting for PhD students and postdoctoral
scientists in the field of biomaterials, The European Doctoral Award of The European Society for
Biomaterials will be introduced by the YSF Educational Officer.
The programme will be complemented by a Young Scientists Forum meeting with the participation
of YSF Board members, National Chapters representatives, YSF alumni and a member of the Council
of The European Society for Biomaterials.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the sponsors who kindly supported our event. We also
acknowledge our collaborators and colleagues from APMG who made this event possible.
We wish you an interesting and fruitful meeting!

About
The APMG is an academic group with expertise in the field of basic and applied research on advanced polymer and
composite materials. The team uses a strong background in macromolecular chemistry, composite materials, polymer
physics and processing technologies, to develop polymer-based biomaterials with engineered properties for a wide range
of applications. Our aim is to rationally use natural and synthetic macromolecules in order to generate biomaterials with
controlled biocompatibility, microstructure, morphology, architecture, mechanical behavior, (bio)adhesive properties, in
vivo biodegradation or stability. To stimulate specific biomaterial-cells interactions, (bio)adhesion, anti-tumoral activity or
to promote biomimetic calcification we use polymer science to design and develop scaffolds through different strategies
including:
(i) micro- and nanoscale technologies for the control of the topography and of the microstructure of implantable scaffolds;
(ii) biofunctionalization;
(iii) hybrid or composite materials, multicomponent polymer systems;
(iv) engineered polymers with personalized design and properties.

Research Main Skills & Specific Topics of Interest

At APMG we investigate, design and develop implantable scaffolds, bioactive surfaces, bioadhesive materials,
nanostructured hydrogels and composites, micro- and nano- particles and fibers, drug delivery systems, porous scaffolds,
injectable compositions, smart materials using:
biopolymers (gelatin, collagen, fibroin, sericin, fibroin, cellulose, alginate, chitosan)
synthetic polymers with controlled properties
nanodiamond, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes
(nano)apatite and other calcium phosphates
dendrimers
peptides and growth factors
