- Read or summarize it
- why is it your favorite, or what does it teach us about the Atonement?
Now that weve talked about all these beautiful testaments to Christs sacrifice, how do you feel? What emotions does this
inspire in you?
Why do you think its important to think about the Atonement and experience these feelings frequently?
The Sacrament
God has given us an ordinance designed to help us do thatthe sacrament.
What is the sacrament?
- It means different things in different Christian churches, but for Latter-Day Saints, sacrament refers to partaking
of the bread and water in remembrance of the Atonement
- Jesus instituted it originally: Matthew 26:26-28
- Today we repeat this ordinance every Sunday in remembrance of the flesh and blood he would later shed for us.
Sacrament prayer
- Lets go to D&C 20:77
- Tells us everything we need to know about the ordinance we are participating in:
o Eat bread in remembrance of Jesus body
o That we may remember him
o We are willing to take upon us his name and keep his commandments
o We are promised his Spirit if we do
- When did we originally promise to take his name upon us?
o Baptismso taking the sacrament is a gesture of renewing the promises we made at baptism
Worthiness and preparation
- When Jesus instituted the sacrament among the people of the Americas as recorded in the Book of Mormon, he
issued additional instructions
o 3 Nephi 18:28-29
- What does it mean to be worthy to take the sacrament?
o There are areas of the gospel where God does not give us more specific instructions. Here, he doesnt give
us a list of questions to answer before were allowed to take the sacrament. Instead, I think he intends for
each of us to choose for ourselves the right way to worship him.
o For those of you who have been members a long time, what are some of the guidelines you personally use
to determine whether you will take the sacrament?
- Why must we put effort into preparing to take the sacrament?
- How can we prepare to take the sacrament? What ways have you found to make it the most meaningful?
- How can we stay focused during the sacrament?
- How is the sacrament a blessing if we treat it in the right way?
As you do these things, your experience with the sacrament and the Atonement will improve and you will reap the
blessings of continual repentance.
