FOCUSED IMPROVEMENT PROJECT TEMPLATE
1. Describe your project goal.
I want to create an interactive notebook where students can not only create notes
to use in my class but to also have a place for them to set goals that they want to
accomplish during the course or even within each chapter that I teach. It will give
students a way to become more involved with their learning.
2. What is the purpose of your project?
I want students to learn some responsibility and to be able to become more
involved in their learning. I think having an interactive notebook with notes and
goals and even practice problems will allow them to see that with a little work they
can be more involved in their learning and also be able to take charge of some of
the material that they are learning in my classroom.
3. Describe the rationale for choosing this project. What literature or research
supports this rationale?
I chose to have my students create an interactive notebook because hands on
activities as well as activities that are more students centered are great for
learning. I feel that students will learn more from hands on application rather than
sitting in a row listening to me lecture and give examples.
4. Describe the timeline and action steps you will need to accomplish your goal.
The interactive notebook will be a work in progress through the entire length of the
class. For each new topic that is taught, the students will add examples to their
notebook. I will demonstrate how I want students to add materials to their
notebooks and also have examples for them to create in the notebook.
5. How will you know if your project is successful?
Seeing students taking charge of their learning and being able to apply the
learning are just a couple of ways to see how the interactive notebook will improve
student learning. I hope that students will be able to learn from the hands on
activity. I also plan to give a bench mark test several different times throughout
and I am going to use the data to measure how the students are improving. I have
not used any type of interactive notebooks throughout the past three years and I
am hoping to see an improvement in learning due to the implementation of the
interactive notebooks.
6. What resources will you need to implement this project?
The students will be using compositions books that they are required to buy. I will
provide color pencils, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, and any other material that I

feel that should be included in the notebook such as graphs and paper for foldable
inserts.
