Operation Popsicle Returns...

The downtown annual sidewalk sale is Thurs, July
21. Each year lots of hands from First Baptist hand
out cold bottles of water and icy popsicles to hot
and thirsty shoppers. No strings attached! Just a
smile and a friendly greeting. All shifts are filled
from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., however, anyone is welcome
to stop by and be an extra helper at anytime during
the day! Stop by and say hi!

Summer Worship Series

Top 5 Most Misquoted Passages of Scripture

In one of my favorite movies of all time, The Princess Bride, the Spanish swordsman Inigo Montoya corrects the brilliant
Vizzini with the classic line: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Similarly, most
of us have probably been guilty of using a word or phrase that we thought meant one thing, but eventually found out that
it meant something entirely different.
This is true of certain passages of Scripture, as well. How often do we quote a passage out of a fuzzy memory from Sunday school or a sermon somewhere, but do we really know what the verse means? What the context is? Why the author
might have been using that phrase or sentence? In the coming weeks, we will explore together six verses that often get
used out of context, and together consider what they might have meant and might mean to us today.

Defining Belief
Youth Summer Sunday School
Recent local, regional, and national attention to religious identity have inspired this summer's youth Sunday school curriculum. Each week the middle school and high school youth will be examining some basic tenets of various religious cultures. The series started off with a look at different expressions of Christianities. After the youth return from Quest they
will spend a session each Sunday morning focusing on Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and alternative religious movements in
the U.S. The content is not intended to be used as a means for making statements about truth, but rather is geared toward
helping us understand people.
The series will conclude with a session specifically intended to help the youth understand how to navigate conversations
about other religious cultures in a variety of situations. The goal of the series is to help the youth feel empowered to engage in conversations with people from different religious backgrounds as a means of understanding one another. Parents
are invited and encouraged to attend sessions as well.
This series will lead us nicely into the fall curriculum which will encourage the youth to more closely examine and learn to
articulate their own beliefs. If you have questions about either series or would be interested in volunteering to help with
Sunday School this fall, please contact Katie Hobson, katie@firstbaptistlawrence.com or Cheryl Harader,
Cheryl@firstbaptistlawrence.com.

Dear Ladies of First Baptist Church, thank you SO much
for all your help with the Kids Closet sale last spring.

had. And, by the way, with your help we collected almost $500 for Joy, International (a ministry devoted to
the rescue of trafficked children). We are looking forward to seeing you in the fall and special thanks to Nathan for all his hard work, too! Here are the dates of
