Work load not liberal :

Generally the office hour of bank continues from 10am-6pm. But in EBL employees are seen
working some extra hours apart from regular timing. We all know EBL is a name of a successful
bank in the banking arena of our country. EBL is known for their 24/7 customer support and their
successes in banking industry of Bangladesh. But what we dont know is for achieving this
position thousands of employees of EBL are working all day long around the country. They have
to come to the office within 9:30am and work up to 7pm. Sometimes they have to bring their
office at home. Working pressure is not the same for everyone of every department. Its seen that
people who join as a fresh graduate and whore in the 1st year of their job has to prepare lots
competitive report analysis for their bank. Theyre shifted from one department to another in
every six months. They have to work as a team for client relationship department, card division,
marketing jobs etc. the work isnt fixed in most of the time so it creates a mental pressure
especially for the juniors. Flexibility in working hours is expected by everyone but unfortunately
in EBL theres less room for flexibility.
Mixing up Personal & professional life :
How would you deal with a colleague at work with whom you seem to be unable to build a
successful working relationship? This situation comes in every persons life. In our career we got
to know hundreds of people and share our work with them. EBLS employees are no different
from this. But its unfortunate that, they also face an inter personal conflict, miscommunication
exists in their offices. For a successful corporate person its important that you keep your
personal feelings & professional life separate. But for some unknown reasons it quietly doesnt
happen at EBL. Employees are divided into teams and they report directly to their team leaders.
What is seen during the yearly analysis of performance review, some groups are productive and
some have failed to achieve the team goal. For those failed teams it creates an extra pressure on
some other teams to be more productive. For this reason the main problem which we identified
for our report is those non performer. Under performing is not a problem which cant be solved
but if your subordinate is not performing because of their team leader biasness, personal
preferences then he gets demotivated. He lost the enthusiasm for work and some where in line
feels hes the weak link in the team. So often in situations like this, the problem is some
combination of miscommunications and unrealistic expectations.

Identification of Problem
Through our research we tried to find out some of the symptoms which arouses a big problem in
EBL. We were doing the project on a organization which is successful one in the banking arena
of our country. We didnt expect that well come to know some of the very unprofessional
incidents incident in the organization. The collection of information was fully primary research
data which we collected through interview of an HR Official of EBL. According to the
companies policy he wasnt allowed to disclose all the information we need for the report. But
whatever the information we have in our hand we analyzed it and identified that, the big problem
EBL is facing now is that non performance from some of its employees. Previously we
mentioned that employees are divided into some teams and the teams are rated on their
performance at the end of a fiscal year. The under performed teams create a pressure on the
productive teams and they have to perform the jobs of those teams and make it a successful bank.
The reasons for non performer into the job can be followingsi.

About 20% of job opening of Eastern Bank Limited are filled by the internal or inhouse recruitment process from the senior executives of the bank and other influential
people of the country. Internal recruitment practices in the bank sometimes allows

unqualified peoples to get the job.

environment.
Extra work load & non flexible work hours sometimes lead to failures.
Employees not understanding the assigned tasks to being overwhelmed with the
assignment.

Apart from the above identified problem theres another issue that EBL is concerned about thats
their exit ratio of employees. Though we dont have actual data for this problem but it came to
our mind while we were taking interview. For this reason were considering it as a second
problem. In the next phase of our report well discuss thoroughly about it and hopefully provide
a solution to the above two mentioned problems.
