Context: Puskesmas AriKae is a program conducted in 2015 which done in
Ende District in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. This program designed
for the primary health care workers which related to maternal-neonatal health
program (called Puskesmas PONED) and also community members which also
related to maternal-neonatal health awareness (called Desa Siaga) to
overcome the problem of high maternal-neonatal deaths. Puskesmas AriKae
designed as an apprenticeship program based on experiential and reflective
learning.
Objective: To learn the effectiveness of Puskesmas AriKae program in
context of maternal and neonatal health awareness capacity improvement in
primary health care workers and also community members.
Methods: This is an observational study conducted by surveys, interviews,
and logbook observation. Population of this study was workers and members of
Puskesmas PONED and Desa Siaga. Approximately 15 members each of the
Puskesmas PONED and Desa Siaga observed in 8-months. Subjects
capacity and perception measured before the program begun, while the
program commenced, and also when the program ended. Quantitative data
analyzed using paired-t-test while qualitative data were descriptively analyzed.
Results: Participants of Puskesmas Ari-Kae program are very expecting and
enjoying this kind of program. Through the apprenticeship, the capacity of both
experienced and inexperienced subjects were improved. This program was able
to increase the participants self esteem and improve their working capacity
(p<0.05). Therefore, there might be some gap found in this study whereas in
community level, seniority became an obstacle for learning and mentoring. The
more experienced participants felt compromised while do mentoring to the
less-experienced-but-older (more senior) participants.
Conclusions: Puskesmas Ari-Kae was an effective method to increase the
capacity of primary health care workers and community members in maternal
and neonatal health programs. It might be used for another program to
enhance learning and capacity, especially in medical and health context.
