TheAN/AAQ37electroopticalDistributedApertureSystem(DAS)isthefirstofanewgenerationof
sensorsystemsbeingfieldedontheLockheedMartinF35LightningIIJointStrikeFighter.DASconsistsofsix
highresolutionInfraredsensorsmountedaroundtheF35airframeinsuchawayastoprovideunobstructed
spherical(4steradian)coverageandfunctionsaroundtheaircraftwithoutanypilotinputoraimingrequired.[1]
TheDASprovidesthreebasiccategoriesoffunctionsineverydirectionsimultaneously:[2]
Missiledetectionandtracking(includinglaunchpointdetectionandcountermeasurecueing)[3]
Aircraftdetectionandtracking(SituationalawarenessIRST&airtoairweaponscueing)
Imageryforcockpitdisplaysandpilotnightvision(imagerydisplayedontothehelmetmounteddisplay)
TheF35'sDASwasflowninmilitaryoperationalexercisesin2011[4]andhasalsodemonstratedtheabilityto
detectandtrackballisticmissilestorangesexceeding800miles(1300kilometers)[5]andhasalsodemonstrated
theabilitytodetectandtrackmultiplesmallsuborbitalrocketssimultaneouslyinflight[6]TheAN/AAQ37DAS
isdesignedandproducedbyNorthropGrummanElectronicSystems.Thecurrentsensorsusedinthesystem
mayhaveinsufficientnightacuityforpilotsusedtoflyingwithnightvisiongoggles(NVG),andaretherefore
augmentedbyanembeddedNVGcamerainthehelmet.[7]ADAStestsystemhasalsobeenusedtotracktank
gunfiring,butthisis"notanF35requirement".[8]
