Dr. Francis Gealogo PhD
The domination of the Spanish colonists began with the loss of communal property, that
once characterised the economy of the barangays. One of the most overlooked property of the
community is the body of its constituents. First, these physical bodies were colonised by the
Spaniards through clothing. From the get-go, the natives used to wear ornate and bare attire
before they were assimilated into the pueblos, and were told to wear barong Tagalog, kamisetas,
pants, and closed-toe shoes. They were described to always be on barefoot, wearing jewelries,
armlets, earrings, and bahag that spans from their waist down to their knees (Pigaffeta, p. 41).
Note, however, that the Spaniards didnt ask the natives to be at the same social level as them. So,
they dictated that all natives in the pueblos tuck-out their barong Tagalog, while Spaniards were the
only ones allowed to tuck them in (Tolentino, p. 81). At this small note we can see how they
maintain their hegemonic leverage over the natives. Aside from clothing, the body is also
dominated through the control of sexual behaviour, and how certain body parts suddenly bear
perverted meanings. Even having tattoos, which used to prove an individuals courage, became
forbidden by Catholicism. Together with tattoos is the intimacy shared by a man and a woman
when engaging in sexual acts. Excessive exploration of ones sexuality is marked by the
Spaniards to be barbaric. The past use of the sagra, a genital ornament used by the natives to
increase pleasure during penetration, was seen in the same way (Morga, p. 246-47). Breasts,
shoulders, knees, and other crevices of the female body is now labelled in the pueblo as
something needed to be hidden in the public, reserved sparingly in private affairs. Dito palang
makikita na natin ang pagkahati ng pribado at publiko.
