16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
In our first reading today from Genesis, we see Abraham
generously offering hospitality to strangers. Sarah, his wife prepares
the food too and both are rewarded by a promise of new life: I will
visit next year and you will have a son.
In the gospel, a similar story of hospitality Martha and Mary
offer true hospitality but in different ways: one through listening and the other providing
food.
In some ways it is a pity that both activities are compared because both are essential.
If Jesus visited and nobody listened to him, that would be very rude. The offering of
food/hospitality is also vital and equally important.
But there is a further point we need to remember as regards the social/religious
reality of those days. Notice, Martha address Jesus as Lord and prepares food; while Mary
sits at the Lords feet. The idea of Mary sitting at Jesus feet is so far removed from Sarahs
position in the first reading: in those days women were not instructed in the Law by the
rabbis because they could neither be a teacher nor a disciple! Jesus is making the point that
his word is for all men, women and children.
Martha is annoyed because she thinks her sister Mary, should be doing something
more important than sitting around listening to Jesus! He could be left sitting alone talking
to himself!
Here we have the on-going problem when to be still in prayer or involved in action!
The reality is that both are necessary our challenge is to work out and plan our lives
allowing both realities in our lives. It is not an easy one. St Timothy reminds us: Faith
without good works is futile. We saw last week in the story of the Good Samaritan, that
action speaks louder than words. But action without the inner spiritual activity /prayer is
empty!
So the challenge remains prayer and action need to go hand-in-hand.
PLANNED GIVING DRIVE: We have been asked by the Financial Department of the
Diocese that we look at our financial situation in the parish. We havent had a Planned
Giving Campaign for over eight years. You are giving regularly and generously over those
years but due to increase costs, inflation and movement of parishioners, the scene has
changed. This is what we hope to have a look at this coming September. We had a planning
meeting last Wednesday to put activities in place in September. More information later.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR
ADULTS (RCIA):
If you are interested in preparing for your
First Communion, Confirmation or exploring
your faith, please complete an application
form available at the back of the church and
make contact with Sr. Susana or Sr Monica at
the Parish Office. The programme will start in
September 2016.
YEAR OF MERCY:
YEAR OF MERCY FORMATION this
weekend, Saturday 16th July after our 6pm
Mass and on Sunday at 6:45pm or17th July
from 10am to 10:45 in the Church.
