SYNOPSIS
1. Title
Effectiveness of educational package on knowledge regarding first aid measures on electrical
accidents among KSEB workers.
2. Background /significance of the problem
Electricity is as dangerous as it is useful. Unlike other products we use every day, we can't see,
hear or smell electricity. Minor electrical shocks could be fatal and minor errors while handling
electrical equipment could hurt you. The more we learn about the safe use of electricity, the less
our chance of injury.1
More than 45 per cent of reported fire accidents in our country are due to electrical problems.
According to a statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau, as many as 15.5 deaths per day
(total 5,663) occurred due to electrocution in the year 2000 itself.3
A consolidated details of accidents that happened for KSEB workers and contract workers
between 2009-2012, shows that in the year 2008-2009 there were 20 fatal and 84 non -fatal
accidents, in the year 2010-11, 34 fatal accidents and 136 non-fatal accidents, where as in the year
2011-12 ,29 fatal and 163 non fatal accidents took place. There is an alarming rate of supplyrelated accidents in state in 2014. According to the statistics, 127 persons, including KSEB
employees, were killed in electric accidents during working hours.3
3. Statement of the problem
A study to assess the effectiveness of an educational package on knowledge regarding first aid
measures on electrical accidents among KSEB workers.
4. Purpose of the study;
The purpose of the study is to assess the effectiveness of an educational package on knowledge
regarding first aid measures on electrical accidents among KSEB workers.
5. Objectives
1. To assess the knowledge regarding first aid measures on electrical accidents among
KSEB workers.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational package on knowledge regarding

first aid measures on electrical accidents among KSEB workers.
3. To find out the association between knowledge regarding first aid measures on
electrical accidents among KSEB workers with their selected demographic
variables.

6. Operational definitions;
Knowledge: it refers to the understanding of KSEB workers regarding first aid measures on
electrical accidents as, measured by structured knowledge questionnaire and expressed in terms
of knowledge score.
Effectiveness: it refers to the gain in knowledge score regarding first aid measures on electrical
accidents among KSEB workers after administering an educational package.
Educational package: it refers to the planned education programme for helping KSEB workers
in gaining better understanding regarding first aid measures on electrical accidents which include
measures to control the severity of electrical shock and burns and how to deal with fall related
injuries.
First aid measures on electrical accidents: it refers to emergency aid or immediate treatment
given to KSEB workers with injures related to electrical accidents by using available facilities at
that time before medical help is imparted.
KSEB workers: it refers to those who are working under Kerala state electricity board,
substation of Kakkanad, Thiruvankulum and Kolenchery with lineman and contract workers,
coming under Vytilla division of Ernakulum central zone who are at risk of developing electrical
accidents.
7. Conceptual framework : General system theory
8. Hypothesis;
H1: There is significant difference between mean per-test and post-test knowledge score
among KSEB workers regarding first aid measures on electrical accidents.

H2: There is significant association between pre-test and post-test knowledge score with
their selected demographic variables.
9. Research methodology
Research approach: Quantitative approach
Research design: Pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test only design
Research settings: Selected KSEB substations (Kakkanad, Thrivankulum, Kolenchery)
under KSEB Vytilla division of Ernakulum central zone.
Population: KSEB workers working under KSEB limited
Sample: KSEB workers of 3 substations
Sample size: 60
Inclusion criteria
Workers of KSEB workers including lineman and contract workers.
Those who are willing to participate in the study.
Those who are present at the time of data collection.
Sampling technique: Convenience sampling
Tools and technique
Tool 1
Section A -Demographic performa
Section B -Structured knowledge questionnaire
Technique: Self report
Pilot study; Pilot study will be done on 6 subjects to establish feasibility of the study.
Plan for data collection
Formal administrative permission will be obtained from concerned authority. Samples will be
selected as per the criteria. Initially the purpose of the study will be explained and consent taken
from participants. Investigator will assess the knowledge of KSEB workers using structured
knowledge questionnaire and will deliver the educational package. Post- test will be conducted
using the same questionnaire after 2 week.
Plan for data analysis

Data will be analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics
