Online Learning: Guidelines and Policies

Dayton Christian School System is pleased to include a number of online learning opportunities for the purpose
of enhancing our Christian school experience. There is no intention of DCSS becoming an online institution,
nor of replacing the relationships and modeling from teachers which is at the core of our living curriculum
emphasis in our traditional classroom settings.

1. Potential Participants enrolled in grades 9 through 12

Students desiring enrichment electives.
Student with special interests and abilities.
Students desiring additional AP classes or dual credit classes.
Students in need of course remediation.
Students with potential schedule conflicts (limited basis).

2. Cost
Depending on the provider, the cost of online courses that are available to DCSS students range
anywhere from $377 to $577.00 (estimate) per course and is the responsibility of the
parents/students enrolled in an online course.
There is an annual, one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $25.00 for the first on-line
course taken during a school year. Additional on-line courses taken during the same school year
do not require this fee.
DCSS tuition is not reduced when a student is enrolled in an online course.

3. Students will be limited to one online course per semester.

4. Qualifications
Students must meet all of the DCSS requirements listed in the course catalogue for online
courses.
Students must also meet all of the qualifications of the institution from which they intend to take
an online course and must follow the appropriate registration process dictated by those
institutions.
Students must demonstrate a positive record of conduct, attendance and academic achievement
in order to qualify to take an online course.
Juniors and seniors must have passed all sections of the OGT exams in order to qualify to take an
online course.

Approved 5/2010
5. Credits Earned
Online Credit for Electives
o Credits may be earned in order to fulfill the required five elective credits for graduation
or simply as an elective enhancement to a student’s transcript for a variety of reasons.
Elective credits approved by DCSS will be recorded on the student’s transcript and the
letter grade received will count in the GPA of the student
Online Credit for Remediation
o If a course has been failed, there is a possibility of a student earning that credit via online
learning if such course is available. For an online course taken to remediate a failure,
credit will be issued toward graduation, and the letter grade received will count toward a
student’s GPA.
Online Dual Credit
o Some online courses are provided for DCSS students where the credit is received from
DCSS as well as college credit. Credits earned in this manner will be recorded on the
student’s transcript and the letter grade received will count in the GPA of the student.
Online Credit for Replacement
o If a student desires to take a class online that is currently offered by DCSS in the
traditional classroom, enrollment limits will be placed on that online course. These
limitations may vary from year-to-year according to master scheduling and staff
assignments and will be determined by the building principal. If permission is granted,
the credits earned for this course will be recorded on the student’s transcript and the letter
grade received will count in the GPA of the student. This will be the least approved
option for online coursework.

6. Terms in which online courses may be taken

All coursework for high school credit must begin and be completed within the DCSS academic
calendar. All online coursework must begin within the first two weeks of the term or the first two
days of j-term.
Semester courses must begin and be completed within the semester of origin.
Year-long courses must begin and be completed within the academic year of origin.
Summer semester courses must be completely finished before the start of the next school year.

7. Scheduling Process
A course catalogue addendum for online coursework will give details of all online course
offerings a student may take at DCSS. An online course registration form must be completed and
submitted for approval, and approval granted in writing, before any online course can be taken
for DCSS credit.

Approved 5/2010
8. Transcript Designation
All online courses that qualify for high school credit will appear on a student’s transcript. By
state mandate, under the directions for credit flexibility, the course name and grade will appear
without any unusual or special designation.
With exception of remediation, credits earned online from approved institutions will be issued by
the DCSS and thus be noted on the transcript and the letter grade will be included in the student’s
GPA.

9. Dropping online courses

A student may drop or add an online course within the first 6 days of a semester.
A student may drop an online course within the first six weeks of the semester with a transcript
designation of “W.”
After the first six weeks of the semester, any failure to complete the course will result in the
grade designation of an “F.”
Online courses must adhere to Dayton Christian School’s drop/add policy and any drop/add
stipulations of the university or college from which they are taking the course.

10. How do I take an online course at DCSS?

Fill out the DCSS application form for online coursework and turn in to the high school office
with the appropriate payment.
Once approval is granted, register for the course and begin and complete the course within the
designated timetable.

Exceptions to any of the above policies and guidelines must have administrative approval.
