Assesment of the Implementation of Laboratory Policies in MAPE 6 Class

I. INTRODUCTION
Assuring quality of the education system is the overriding goal of University of Cebu-Main Campus.
And according to professor of Minister Education Kader Asmar, the National Policy on Whole-School
evaluation introduces an effective monitoring and evaluation process that is vital to the improvement of quality
and standards of performance in schools. Together with the accompanying guidelines, this Policy prescribes an
approach that is built on interactive and transparent processes. These processes include school self-evaluation,
ongoing district-based support, monitoring and development and external evaluations conducted by the
supervisory units. Implemention of policies in MAPE Class, on the other hand, has not really followed neither
properly use by the students. MAPE 6 focuses on Solfeggio and Applied Piano, where the students will learn
how to play piano. And according to professor of MAPE 6 class Isagani Butcon, most of the students are
careless and do not properly use the instruments specifically the piano. Hence, the piano gets ruined and it gets
lesser. Therefore, if there is a mandatory of implementing the policies in MAPE Class, it will be a great
advantage and it will lead the students to become more responsible and well-discipline. And the claim of this
research is to have a proper way of implementing the Laboratory policies in MAPE.
The MMCP (Manhattanville Music Curriculum Project) aims to shape attitudes, helping students see
music not as static content to be mastered, but as personal, current, and evolving. If the students is trained to
develop their personality in a good way, it has also a good result in terms of playing and using an instruments.
According to Eric Jensen in Implementing Music in the Classroom, it is said that it is more better to get the
students involved in the process of managing the music after the teacher have introduced it. Many are happy to
play named disk jockey for the class, but the teacher will have to clear rules on what's done and when. There is
always a rules in doing an activity in class, thus, it gives a clear and well-organized performance.
There is an existing laboratory policies in MAPE 6 class. And one of the example policies are, Proper
order discipline must be maintained inside to the laboratory premises, avoid horseplay during laboratory and
practical work period. Second is smoking, eating and other non-laboratory activities are not allowed. Next is
cleanliness must observed at all time, trash should be disposed properly in its correct place. All laboratory
equipment and facilities must be afforded with the care, they should be returned in good condition after
laboratory works are finished, user will be held responsible for any damage made to any of this equipment
during the activity hour, individual or group users will be charged for cost of such damage. Vandalism is
punishable for suspension. Students will be allowed to enter during their class schedule with the presence of
the laboratory instructor. Flammable items should not be allowed inside the laboratory room, etc. But despite of
having a laboratory policies, it was not fully functional. And one of the main problems are the students are still
not listening and will not follow the rules. The students usually use the instruments without care. And there are

students who does not know how to use the instruments and they end up destroying it. They are not fully
disciplined. Classroom discipline problem will always exist and as a teacher, it is not easy to control the
students. It takes high energy and a lot of time to motivate and teach a group of students.
But there is always a solution in every problems. According to John Heyden of PEPS Community
Parter Jamtown. At some point, children understand their challenges as problems and they crave the positive
attention parents/teachers provide with each success. Reinforcement is one of the good way to help the
students in terms of their behaviors and attitude in the class. According to the teacher of Centralia WA Patricia
Duncan, the teacher would not damage the students psyches by taking the lead and being the boss of the
classroom. Once the teacher gain the confidence, things will go more smoothly, and if the teacher will also take
a firm lead, the students will respect and respond more readily.

II. Conceptual Framework
MAPE 6 focuses on Solfeggio and Applied Piano , a vocal exercise in which the sol-fa syllables are
used. This study is based on the concept of social learning theory by Albert Bandura ( 1977).
Social learning theory integrated behavioral and cognitive theories of learning in order to provide a
comprehensive model that could account for the wide range of learning experiences that occur in the real
world. As initially outlined by Bandura and Walters in 1963 and further detailed in 1977, key tenets of social
learning theory are as follows:

1. Learning is not purely behavioral; rather, it is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context.
2. Learning can occur by observing a behavior and by observing the consequences of the behavior
(vicarious reinforcement).

3. Learning involves observation, extraction of information from those observations, and making
decisions about the performance of the behavior (observational learning or modeling). Thus, learning
can occur without an observable change in behavior.

4. Reinforcement plays a role in learning but is not entirely responsible for learning.
5. The learner is not a passive recipient of information. Cognition, environment, and behavior all
mutually influence each other (reciprocal determinism).

Social learning theory draws heavily on the concept of modeling, or learning by

observing a behavior. Bandura outlined three types of modeling stimuli:

Live model

in which an actual person is demonstrating the desired behavior

Verbal instruction

in which an individual describes the desired behavior in detail and instructs the participant in how to
engage in the behavior

Symbolic

in which modeling occurs by means of the media, including movies, television, Internet, literature, and
radio. Stimuli can be either real or fictional characters.

Exactly what information is gleaned from observation is influenced by the type of model,
as well as a series of cognitive and behavioral processes, including:

Attention

In order to learn, observers must attend to the modeled behavior. Attention is impacted by characteristics of
the observer (e.g., perceptual abilities, cognitive abilities, arousal, past performance) and characteristics of
the behavior or event (e.g., relevance, novelty, affective valence, and functional value).

Retention

In order to reproduce an observed behavior, observers must be able to remember features of the behavior.
Again, this process is influenced by observer characteristics (cognitive capabilities, cognitive rehearsal)
and event characteristics (complexity).

Reproduction

To reproduce a behavior, the observer must organize responses in accordance with the model. Observer
characteristics affecting reproduction include physical and cognitive capabilities and previous
performance.

Motivation

The decision to reproduce (or refrain from reproducing) an observed behavior is dependent on the
motivations and expectations of the observer, including anticipated consequences and internal standards.

An important factor in social learning theory is the concept of reciprocal determinism.

This notion states that just as an individuals behavior is influenced by the environment, the
environment is also influenced by the individuals behavior. In other words, a persons behavior,
environment, and personal qualities all reciprocally influence each other. For example, a child
who plays violent video games will likely influence their peers to play as well, which then
encourages the child to play more often. This could lead to the child becoming desensitized to
violence, which in turn will likely affect the childs real life behaviors.

III. Methodology
The study utilized the descriptive method. It was used to describe the characteristics
phenomenon being studied about the students behavior and attitude who are enrolling in Mape 6. This
research was held at University of Cebu - Main Campus. The sample respondents were taking Mape 6
subject in College of Teacher Education .The researchers were using checklist to gather data having 10
questions . The researchers provided a letter to give by administators to conduct a research and to the
sample respondents who are Mape 6 class. To gather data , the researchers will use the checklists.
