THE USE OF CORNELL NOTE TAKING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS

NARRATIVE LISTENING COMPREHENSION


(An Action Research of Tenth Grade Students at SMA Pasundan Rancaekek Bandung)

ABSTRACT

This research entitled The Use of Cornell Note Taking Strategy to Improve
Students Narrative Listening Skill (An Action Research of Tenth Grade Students at SMA
Pasundan Rancaekek Bandung). This research was aimed to find out the process of Teaching
Narrative Listening Comprehension using Cornell Note Taking Strategy and to identify
students, responses toward the implementation of Cornell Note Taking Strategy. The research
approach used in this research was qualitative. The research design used in this research was
Classroom Action Research conducted at SMA Pasundan Rancaekek Bandung. Practical
Classroom action research was type of Classroom action reseach used in this research. It
involved one class of tenth grade which consist of 20 students. The data were collected from
questionnaire, observation, and test. The data from the three instruments were analyzed
qualitatively. The result of this research showed that the implementation of Cornell Note
Taking strategy helped the students to comprehend the English text. The students average
score from cycle to cycle were improved. The students also responded the implementation of
Cornell Note Taking strategy positively. They focused on the task using Cornell Note Taking
strategy. In addition, Cornell Note Taking strategy helped the students to write question of the
text, rewrite the information by their own words, and to write the summary of the text. In
conclusion, Cornell Note helped the students in listening Narrative text. Therefore Cornell
Note Taking strategy is recommended to be implemented in teaching listening
comprehension.
