GRADING SYLLABUS
The Black Belt represents mastery of the basic techniques. The students
understanding of their new skills have stood the test of time and cannot be taken away
from them. Like the tree it has survived the harsh times and learnt to survive. It has
matured and will stand strong for many many years.

GRADING SYLLABUS
Chodanbo1
Chodanbo2
Black Belt
Black Belt 1st Dan/Pum
Chodanbo1,is the first stage of your Black Belt program. This level is
represented by a Red Belt with a thin Black line through the middle of the belt. At this stage the
student is still in the developmental stage of a Black Belt and is now aware of the areas that need
improved upon to achieve their Black Belt.
Chodanbo2, is the second stage of the Black Belt program. At this level the
student is transitioning from a junior belt level into the Black Belt and as such the belt is and . By
now the student is on and advanced journey to correct all of the basic techniques and now learning the
advanced training program.
Black Belt is the first official time that the student wears their Black Belt
and does so with pride. There are no stripes or any wording on the belt and it is representative of the
beginning of the new Black Belt; a clean sheet to work with. Here the student is still fine tuning some
areas and has advanced their grading preparation outside of the normal classes and is almost ready for
the full recognition of a Black Belt.

GRADING SYLLABUS
Black Belt 1st Dan/Pum is the official world recognised Black Belt. At this
level the student has demonstrated all of their basic techniques, demonstrated an understanding of the
history of Taekwondo, its terminology, and has demonstrated the charateristics of a Black Belt through
the application of the Taekwondo Tenants. The Black Belt is now upgraded to have your name, the
club name and your Dan/Pum level embodied onto the belt. At this stage you are officially
acknowledged and welcomed into the Black Belt Club.
MENTAL PREPARATION
Black Belt gradings are basically a test of concentration and focus. No instructor will recommend their
student for the grading unless they are physically, mentally and technically prepared for it!
It is your grading. Take control of it . . . . dont let it control you.
It is okay to feel nervous. If you do, acknowledge the feeling and use it as energy.
During the grading, self-talk can help a lot. During one step sparring, after the bare-hand self defence
set, after the knife self defence set, and after each pattern, turn your back to the examiners table and
address your uniform. Use this time for mental and physical recovery. Use deep breathing to get your
breath back, calm yourself, get your focus and relax before beginning the next pattern or grading
exercise. After each pattern or exercise, talk yourself through what is to come next.
If you know you have done well, give yourself a mental pat on the back and then re-focus on what
comes next.
During the grading, if you are unsure of the examiners instructions, didnt understand or couldnt hear
a question or request; dont feel embarrassed, simply ask them to repeat it. (eg. Excuse me Sir, did
you say Taeguek Chil Jang? or Im sorry Sir, Im not sure what you mean)
PHYSICAL PREPARATION
Your grading is also a physical workout, intensified by the nervous and mental energy that is also
expended. You should be fit enough to perform all of your patterns, all of your basic and advance hand
/ foot skills, as well as your one-step and self-defence, then still have enough in reserve for three or
more rounds of free sparring. If you train for this and use the breathing and re-focusing tips mentioned
TAEKWONDO
GRADING SYLLABUS
above, you should have no problems. Remember, during the grading, make the most of any short
breaks. (eg. while addressing your uniform between exercises)
POOMSAE
You are required to demonstrate a number of your traditional Taegeuk forms as well as create your
own poomsae. Each age level has a different requirement and you should refer to your syllabus.
Whilst executing a pattern and you think you may have made a mistake, dont stop, dont let it show
on your face and dont try to go back and correct it. You will only draw attention to it and now you
have made two mistakes! If you think you have made a mistake, put it out of your mind immediately
and carry on regardless. It belongs to the past and whats coming up next demands your full attention.
Dont let it ruin your focus. This rule applies equally to all areas of your grading.
BOARD BREAKING
Successful board breaking hinges on focus, concentration and breathing as well as a positive mental
attitude to the exercise. Dont rush it and dont let yourself be rushed. Make sure your boards are set
up exactly the way you want them. Dont let anyone else tell you how to set up the boards. You only
get one chance at each break.
Preparation before the grading is important. Start by working out the placement of your boards. This
should be done with kick-bags or mitts before you even consider buying real boards. Keep your
techniques simple and effective. The difficult techniques are the ones that are most likely to let you
down on the day.
For hand techniques, hammer fist, reverse knife-hand and palm-heel are good and reliable. Punches are
okay if you have done a lot of punching and your knuckles are in good condition but not recommended
for breaking anything more than a single board.
Reliable foot techniques include, stepping side-kick (strike with heel, dont push), roundhouse (strike
with ball of foot), pushing front kick (strike with heel), turning back kick (strike with heel) and front
kick or jumping front kick (strike with ball of foot). It is most important that you feel comfortable with
your choice of techniques.
Start practicing your breaking at least eight weeks before your grading. This will allow time for bruises
to heal between sessions. Treat any bruises with R.I.C.E. immediately after they occur. This is very
important.
Practice breaking plastic boards or junior boards as often as you need to. Boards are expensive and so
is failing your grading. You should have successfully executed each breaking technique, on regulation
size boards, at least once during your lead up to the grading. This is a strong psychological plus. In
doing this you should also become familiar with exactly where and how your boards should be set up
for the grading. On grading day you should be able to set your boards up quickly, with a minimum of
final adjustments.
When executing a break, set your board(s) up and check your distance. Stop and bow to the examiners.
Before proceeding with the break check your distance one last time, you may have inadvertently

stepped out of distance when you turned to bow. Take a deep breath. Focus through and beyond the
board. Relax. Picture your hand/foot going through the board(s) up to the elbows of the holders.
Dont forget to KIHAP on each break.
Multiple breaks should be continuous but dont go too fast. No-one has ever gone over-time in this
exercise. If you fail to break a board you have not failed your grading. Keep your head, slow down
and re-focus before going onto the next board. If you miss two boards in a row, it may be difficult to
pass your grading.
EQUIPMENT & FLUID REQUIREMENTS
You will need to ensure you have adequate equipment and fluids for your grading. You will need the
following:
Full set of protectors Head guard, mouth guard, arm guard, leg guard, body guard, groin
guard
Spare dobok
Towel
Strapping tape / Band aids
Medication of any sort (asthma pump)
Any braces for support (ankle, knee etc)
At least 2 litres of fluid. The best combination is to split 50/50 with water and electrolytes
(Gatorade / Powerade etc)
TIME LINE
12 24 months out: (guideline)
You have successfully graded to your Chodanbo. Your previous grading report will highlight the areas
that you need to improve upon and will set the basis of your training program moving forward. You
will start revisiting your previously learnt poomsae and will also be introduced to advanced techniques
such as weapons. Here you will start transitioning into the Black Belt mindset and think like a Black
Belt.
12 18 months out: (guideline)
You have corrected some of your techniques and starting to really identify the type of martial artist
you want to be. You may have a strength in kicking or poomsae or sparring and this is clearly
identifiable from your demonstrations in the class environment. You may have also completed the
next grading within the Black belt program and identified others areas of improvement. The Black
Belt mindset has well and truly set in and you now visualise yourself as a Black Belt and your conduct
represents this.
12 months out: (guideline)
You are now well and truly aware of the areas that you need to improve on for the next level. You
have moulded your particular style and are developing your creative poomsae. You have been able to

GRADING SYLLABUS
demonstrate the basic skills at an advanced level and you are demonstrating a greater understanding of
the new advanced techniques. Others around you now acknowledge your skills and your Black Belt
mindset. You should be attending class at least 2 times per week.
Six months out: (guideline)
Begin own physical training twice a week (running, personal training etc)
Must attend traditional training twice per week, plus
Attend sparring class at least once a week, plus
Attend Black Belt class once a week
Attend own grading practice occasionally with other students preparing for their Black Belt
grading
Continue with the theory and give thought to the content of your essay.
A black belt grading selection will be held to determine whether you will be ready for the
grading. This also includes your Taekwondo history and terminology, and your black belt
essay.
Must attend a minimum of four classes per week (your choice)
Maintain own physical / mental training
Please bear in mind, if you miss this one, the next one is 6 months away.
POST GRADING RECOVERY
Cold shower/bath
After the grading probably the first thing you will want to do once you get back home is to have a hot
shower and go straight to bed. Try not to do either of these! Having a hot shower is probably the worst
thing for the body as it will bring out any swelling and bruising that you may have. Try to take a cold
to warm shower or go jump in a cold swimming pool to help relax your muscles. Ice any injuries you
may have every hour on the hour for the next 24 hours.
Massage
At the end of the first day (or the next morning) you may have sore and tight muscles. The burn is
due to the build up of lactic acid which is a by-product of muscle activity. Massage (and stretching)

can help flush this away by increasing circulation in the area. Muscle soreness the day after is caused
by micro-trauma in the muscle. Exercising a muscle creates microscopic tears in the muscle and
surrounding tissue. The muscle may also be tight, constricting blood flow through the muscle.
Massage will help increase circulation and relax the muscle thus speeding the healing process and
decreasing the recovery time.
Stretching
It maybe, one of the furthest things on your mind, but continuing to stretch out your muscles will help
them recover and reduce the soreness in your body. You must maintain a daily stretching program to
ensure that you maintain and increase your flexibility and also relieve muscle soreness.
Conclusion
There is more to a black belt grading than most people imagine. It is more than just learning the
syllabus; the other aspects also require a great deal of preparation. Without this preparation, candidates
can be mentally and physically un-prepared. This un-preparedness can be the difference between pass
and fail or even an A-pass or pass with distinction. Full preparation will ensure that your performance
on the day will be the best that you are capable of, and no other extraneous factors have hampered you.
Hopefully this guide has given a simple insight into what happens at a grading and some information
on how to get through the grading, which will enable proper preparation and allow you to achieve your
goal.

UNIFORM
Presentation is important:
Your uniform (Dobok) must be clean, long and well pressed (it is advisable to starch your
uniform to get that extra snap in your poomsae).
Your belt must represent your current grading. No electrical tape is allowed on your belt for
the grading.
Instructor Certification
Your instructor must be able to certify the following prior to your grading:
The applicant has met the minimum training attendance requirements as outlined by both the
Kukkiwon and MFA.
The applicant has demonstrated (in the class environment) a full understanding of the grading
technique.
The applicant has demonstrated the discipline to be considered for a Dan / Pum grading.
The applicant has completed the minimum personal development exercises.
The applicant has been given Black Belt grading approval from the pre-grading workshop.
The applicant has another Black Belt endorsement.
