RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY

PERSONA

ABOUT HAMMERD
Hammerd was commissioned by teddyedward, a developer
of productivity software for auction houses. The company
offers a cloud-based desktop solution, and wanted to
explore the idea of a mobile app, that could be used by
clients to manage key tasks in the event of an emergency.

Alastair
Managing director of a midsize auction house

We need a reliable back-up system thatll allow us to

keep trading on a sale day, but I just cant afford one.

MY PROCESS
Stakeholder interviews, competitor analysis, persona,
information synthesis, ideation, wireframes, prototypes and
usability testing.
PROJECT TIMEFRAME
1 week. Elective project for General Assemblys User
Experience Design Accelerated course, June 2016.
TEAM
Teddyedward Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer.
Staff and students at General Assembly.

Place product development in

the context of our target
audiences issues and goals.

STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEWS
Identify our target audience.
Understand how things work in
an unfamiliar industry.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
Is the solution already out there?
Validate assumptions about
features and functionality.

AFFINITY MAPPING

Establish relationships between

key tasks. Understand how
information is currently stored.

INFORMATION SYNTHESIS

HAMMERD

STORYBOARD

USER FLOW

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Alastair needs a way to ensure a sale can go ahead in the event

of a systems failure, because postponing or cancelling would
damage his business.

We observed that auction houses are

high stress environments on sale days.
A solution would need to be as familiar,
and intuitive, as paper and pen.

There is no reference to disaster

management in competitor products. A
low-cost solution could find a market, if
there proves to be an unmet need.

DESIGN EXPLORATION

HAMMERD

SITEMAP
We chose to develop two task scenarios further:
PAPER PROTOTYPE

The first was to check an existing customers contact and

payment details, then register them to the days sale.
The second created a buyer profile for a new customer,
before also registering them to the days sale.

HAMMERD

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND FEEDBACK

USER FEEDBACK
Successive iterations of
the task scenarios were
tested with fellow
students, while a later
version was shown to the
clients.
Key findings included:
While its tempting to cram
the available space with
content, better use of
white space makes a
screen less daunting.
Navigation needs to be
located at the top of the
screen, to remain visible
when the keyboard is in use.
Back buttons help to
correct mistakes quickly.
When a task is completed,
or a search delivers a result,
this needs to be shown on
the same page.

OUTCOMES AND NEXT STEPS

The clients response to the
mockup has been very
positive. The next step is to
wireframe the other key
tasks, after which we will
test a working prototype
with auction house staff.

The results of these tests

should help to make a
business case for the app,
and clarify where additional
resources, such as visual
design and developer
time, are required.

EMPLOYEE RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY

ABOUT KNILA
Knila develops custom software applications for 1st Money
Center, a US-based financial services provider, and a growing
range of clients in India. They commissioned a small project
to help them understand the informational needs of job
candidates, employees, and customers. This will form the
basis of an upcoming website redesign.
To keep costs down, we agreed that deliverables would be
limited to top-line design and content guidance.

MY PROCESS
Stakeholder interviews (both face-to-face and by phone),
employee survey, analytics, affinity mapping, competitor
analysis, persona builds and user journey audits. Findings
were presented as a website mockup, showing information
architecture and content proposals.
PROJECT TIMEFRAME
2 weeks.
