TheselectedAP/FDmodesinclimbareOPCLB,V/SandEXPEDr*.OPCLBistobeusedifATCgivesradarvectororclearstheaircraftdirecttoa
givenFLwithoutanyclimbconstraints.
TheuseoflowvaluesofV/S,e.g.lessthan1000ft/min,maybeappropriateforsmallaltitudechangesasitmakestheguidancesmootherandneeds
lessthrustvariation.
Inareasofhightrafficdensity,lowvaluesofverticalspeedwillreducethepossibilityofnuisanceTCASwarnings.
IfthecrewselectsahighV/S,itmayhappenthattheaircraftisunabletoclimbwiththishighV/SandtomaintainthetargetspeedwithMaxClimbthrust,
forperformancereasons.Inthatcase,theAP/FDwillguidetothetargetV/S,andtheA/THRwillcommanduptoMaxClimbthrust,inordertotryto
keepthetargetspeedbuttheaircraftwilldecelerateanditsspeedmightreachVLS.WhenVLSisreachedtheAP/FDrevertstoOPCLBandthe
aircraftacceleratetoinitialtargetspeed.
WheneverV/Sisused,pilotsshouldpayparticularattentiontothespeedtrendasV/Stakesprecedenceoverspeedrequirements.
TheEXPEDmoder*isusedtoclimbwithmaximumverticalgradienti.e.thetargetspeedbecomesgreendot.ItsuseshouldbeavoidedaboveFL250.
ThecrewshouldbeawarethataltitudeconstraintsintheMCDUFPLNpageareobservedonlywhentheclimbismanaged,i.e.whenCLBisdisplayed
ontheFMA.Anyotherverticalmodewilldisregardanyaltitudeconstraints.
Alikelyscenariowouldbe,whentheFCUaltitudeissetaboveanaltitudeconstraintandthepilotselectsV/Swhenbelowthatconstrainttoavoida
potentialTCASTA.Inthiscase,theaircraftwilldisregardthealtitudeconstraint.
