ATLAS OF CONTINUOUS COOLING TRANSFORMATION DIAGRAMS FOR VANADIUM STEELS Prepared by VANITEC Vanadium International Technical Committee Winterton House (P.O. Box 9) dune 1985 High Street, Westerham, Kent, TN16 1Ad England. VANITEC The Vanadium International Technical Committee (VANITEC) is a committee of rep- resentatives of companies involved in the mining of vanadium ores, processing of ores to produce oxides of vanadium or slags containing them, and. manufacturers of ferro vanadium and other vanadium additions for steel and titanium alloys and manufacturers of vanadium chemicals. The object of VANITEC is to promote the use of vanadium bearing materials and thereby to increase the consumption of vanadium, To this end it organises research on the properties of vanadium bearing materials, issues publication, (both original publications specifically prepared by its members or other organisations and reprints of papers from the technical press). In addition from time to time it organises seminars and conferences in various parts of the world. In 1981 at the time of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the discovery of vanadium VANITEC endowed an award to be presented by the Metals Society each year to the author(s) of the best published paper on vanadium bearing materials. The award winning papers are reprinted by VANITEC. Although many types of vanadium steels are in general use, metallurgists are still involved in developing new steels and fabrication techniques to meet the changing conditions of manufacture and the advancing requirements of engineers. In recent years the uses of vanadium in various types of steel have been extended and in particular the role of vanadium as a hardenability agent has been exploited especially in heat treated structural and engineering steels, carburising steels and in “As forged” steels (which are replacing many carbon and low alloy heat treated steels). In the development of new steel compo- sitions as well as for the controlof heat treatment and fabrication processes for established. steels, continuous cooling diagrams are, therefore, a valuable if not essential tool in the hands of the metallurgist and engineer. Many CCT diagrams have been published for vanadium steels and these, together with others which have hitherto not been published, have been collected together in this Atlas. Increasing attention is also being given to the structure and properties, of the heat affected zone and of the weld metal of welded structures and a knowledge of the transformation characteristics of steels under high cooling rates is of particular importance to the welding technologist involved in the development and control of welding processes and this Atlas should provide useful information for those concerned with these processes. The transformation behaviour of a steel can be significantly influenced by its thermo- mechanical history especially if this affects the austenitic grain size. Where possible, therefore, the metallurgical history and austenitic grain sizes have been presented with the CCT diagrams. Unfortunately, however, in many cases this information was not available. In some cases the CCT diagrams for non vanadium steels and vanadium steels of otherwise identical composition and thermomechanical history, were available. In these cases the two diagrams have been super-imposed to show the effect of vanadium on a particular steel composition. Isothermal transformation diagrams have been derived for some steels and these have been included in the Atlas especially for steels where CCT diagrams are not available. In order to help reference the two hundred diagrams have been classified under steel types based on steel compositions and in some classifications sub categories have been used. Within each category or sub category, the steels are arranged firstly in order of increasing carbon and then in order of increasing vanadium content. It is appreciated, however, that while the broad classification is probably correct, some steels could be considered as belonging to more than one category. ‘Many of the diagrams have been taken from published work and appropriate references have been given with the diagrams. A large number of the diagrams have also been supplied by individual organisations from their unpublished records. VANITEC wishes to express its appreciation to all those concerned for their cooperation and for their permission to publish the diagrams in this Atlas. VANITEC also wishes to acknowledge the help of people who have helped in directing them to some of the published diagrams. Arthur M.
