Beti Bachao Beti Padao Scheme

The Census 2011 had shown an alarming data as the Child Sex Ratio(CSR) between
0-6 years children has plummeted to a record low of 908. This is a very
disheartening situation for a developing nation like ours. These data reveals a bitter
truth that women in this country are not empowered yet and there is still no change
in peoples mindset towards women. The main reason of this low CSR has been the
practice of Sex selective Elimination (SSE) leading to low sex ratio at birth. This is
happening because of the easy availability of sex diagnostic tools and the
promotion of this illegal practice by the hospitals in return of huge money. Another
reason of this decreasing CSR is the careless attitude of the parents towards their
girl child depriving them of basic necessities of life like schooling, good food and
health.
So, in order to resolve this issue, Indian Government has launched a Beti Bachao,
Beti Padao Scheme.
The Main features of this initiative is to:
1) To prevent gender biased sex selective elimination.
-by strengthening the Pre- Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques
Act(1994).
2) To ensure survival and protection of the Girl child.
3) To ensure the Education and participation of the Girl Child.
This scheme is being implemented through a national campaign and focused multi
sectoral action in the 100 selected districts that have a low ranking in CSR, covering
the entire nation. This is joint initiative of 3 central ministries including Ministry of
Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Affairs and Ministry of
Human Resource Development.
